Basic minesweeper Project 1265 (Yakhont) is designed for searching, trawling, and destruction of mines in coastal and near-sea zone. The lead ship entered the Navy in 1972 and production continued until 1992. Total for the Soviet Navy and Navy Vietnam, Cuba, Syria, Bulgaria and other friendly countries in the Soviet Union built 80 ships of Project 1265 and 1265E (export).

Ships of the later period of construction differ from earlier ships of this project, some changes in the power plant, artillery weapons and avionics equipment, and the performance characteristics vary significantly and the project number remains unchanged. To reduce the level of their own electro-magnetic fields the case is made of wood and covered with fiberglass.

This vessel was built in Petrozavodsk Shipyard "Vanguard ". The "Polyarny" has the distinction of being named for the closed military town which is her own homeport, as indeed it is for the entire Kola Peninsula Flotilla to which she belongs.
