Bijawar was actually a Gond territory conquered by Chatrasal Bundela and it fell to the share of Jagat Raj who ruled from Jaitpur. It is named after Bije Singh, a Gond ruler of the area. Jagat Raj had three sons of note - Kirat Singh who predeceased him, Pahar Singh and Bir Singh Dev. On Jagat Raj's death, Pahar Singh usurped the throne and the two sons of Kirat Singh, Guman Singh and Khuman Singh waged a war of attrition against their uncle. Bir Singh Dev, on the other hand, supported his brother. However, as time progressed, Pahar Singh started to distrust his brother and sensing danger, Bir Singh Dev fled Jaitpur with his family to Brindavan.
