Montecatini spa
Wellness is a top item also on the Tuscan agenda. A spa, well known all over Europe and beyond not the least for its elegance and fine luxury is Montecatini Terme.
The plane around Montecatini has at all times been rich of water, some 500 years ago it was a rather insane swamp area which then was drained. The Romans, of course, knew about the healing force of the Montecatini Terme waters effervescing from the Tettuccio source.
It is said: Cosimo I, first duke of Tuscany, first tore down to ground the old fortress Montecatini and then, following the recommendation of the family doctor, sent his wife to drink the waters of the source mentioned above.
Many high ranking people have followed her example thereafter.
Some 150 years ago Montecatini started to build what it features today and the upper crust began to undergo courses of treatment or just to show up in Italy’s most mundane spa. Montecatini Terme is a town characterized by “art nouveau”, spacious, aesthetically beautiful with its fine architecture and a harmony and elegance of the interior of buildings at the same level. Specifically well known are the Tettuccio sources with its allegoric tile pictures above the marble draw counters. To undergo mineral water cures, relax and take mud baths form the traditional pattern of programme. Nowadays Montecatini Terme has to offer something for everybody.

MONTECTINI ALTO
The fortress Montecatini, later on an independent town Montecatini Alto, lies high above Montecatini Terme in a breathtaking panoramic location. Today it is a charming little town, the
narrow streets quiet and calm like in medieval times.
The population lives in deep peace – until Easter when the assault of tourists on inns and restaurants begins.

A small train, la funivia, links the spa city with Montecatini Alto, the ride being an adventure and experience as it will be to climb the serpentines by car; for the real braves there is also a trail …
Both towns, different as they might be, are worth more than just an excursion.
