Bhandara District is an administrative district in northeastern region of Maharashtra state, India. It borders Madhya Pradesh and Gondia district. Bhandara, also referred to as Bandara or Bhanara in historic texts, was a part of Hindu dynasties such as the Vakataka by the 4th-century, the Yadav dynasty by the 8th-century, and later the Gond dynasty. After the 14th century, the region was under the hegemony of the Sultanates and Mughals, then the Maratha before coming under the colonial administration in the 19th-century. It was a part of Lanji and Madhya Pradesh till 1950s, thereafter of Maharashtra.

The forested district has several forts and Hindu temples complexes built before the 14th century and again during the Maratha period.
