Friday 21st June 2013 Peatling Magna to Peatling Parva 5 miles.

Walking  by the pretty route adds three mile

Our usual blogger was away on holiday but had suggested the attached walk for this week - just over 5 miles with a stop in the middle at The Shires in Peatling Parva.

I did the walk on Wednesday afternoon (very hot).  3 Fields with bullocks in them  and about 9 styles.

Start:
Peatling Magna -  Parked near The Old Cock Inn, Main Street, Peatling Magna. .

Started by going down the hill towards Peatling Parva and turned right at the signpost  (Leicester Round).  Through fields (buttercups and horses) eventually turning left onto Mere Road (shaded path through trees).  Kept going towards the windmills.

Eventually at the junction of paths took the left hand path.  Bit rough and muddy at first then across fields and through the farmyard to the road.  Picked up the footpath – Peatling Parva ¼ mile.  3 styles then out through the churchyard and on to The Shires for refreshments.

Part 2:
Back up the hill towards the Church then took the footpath alongside Long Folly Farm.  Entered fields (first cows) taking diagonal path across the field and round the back of Peatling Hall.

Followed the  path across fields towards Peatling Magna, path is not well used so looked ahead to yellow markers, eventually arriving at the crossroads. (Peatling Magna ¼ mile). Took the footpath towards the back of the church to avoid walking along the road.  Walked round the Church and back to the start.

Report on the Walk.

The weather wasn’t looking too good as twelve walkers met in Cosby Village Hall Car Park. We decided to go on a round walk starting in Peatling Magna, walking to Peatling Parva and then back again.
Muddy in parts

Plenty of styles

Overgrown

All the time the weather was brightening and when the sun shone it was quite warm.

We took the Leicestershire Round from Peatling Magna through fields of buttercups and horses then headed south along Mere Road towards Peatling Parva.  The recent sunshine and rain had caused the wildflowers to bloom and the paths were quite overgrown.  In a couple of places the recent rains made the path quite muddy.  The walk comes out into Peatling Parva through the churchyard.

Our half way stop was at The Shires in Peatling Parva where most of us had coffee and mint chocolates sitting outside in the sunshine.

Cow takes an interest in passer-by

We walked back towards the chuch then took the path along the side of Long Folly Farm, continuing on behind Peatling Hall and through fields of sheep and cows. We continued across pasture land to Peatling Magna arriving into the village from behind the Church.

We all agreed it was one of the most pleasant walks we had taken for some time.

About 5½ miles.

Friday 14th June Croft to Stoney Cove,Stoney Stanton. Approx 5miles

Fifteen walkers assembled at the car park in the village for a short car journey to Croft depicted on the right. Croft is famous for its very large quarry which can be seen from the top of the Croft hill - it can't be missed if you are in the area. Today, we are not going to Croft quarry, we're off to Stoney Cove just outside of  Stoney Stanton - another well known quarry which has been transformed into a national diving centre.
It was a bit of a mixed weather forecast, sun and showers, so appropriate clothing was worn.

Heritage Centre Croft

We set off out of the village on Broughton Road passing the heritage centre (an old red telephone box filled with information about bygone years in Croft). Along Broughton Road we turned right  on to a bridle way sign-posted Stoney Stanton.
The weather, as can be seen in the photos, didn't improve. Continuing on the walk a photo opportunity arose and we all stopped to wave !!!!!!!!!!!!
and then carried on having pleased the photographers.

We came across a well ventilated res. des.

The photographer has to catch up with the group when a master piece has been taken.

Arriving at Stoney Cove we were delighted that quite a bit of activity was going on. Divers were getting ready for the dive into the depths of  the cove. There are all kinds of objects down there - a double decker bus, tank and an aircraft to name a few - even a few fish of various sizes!

There is a very nice restaurant at the cove where you can sit and relax and watch what the divers are doing whilst having a cup of coffee/tea.

Hat of the Day

Well, it was a good walk, very interesting all the way and the rain held off till we got back into the cars on our return. Let's have some real sunshine the next week.

Friday 7th June Dunton Bassett to Ashby Parva Approx 5 miles.

The sun was out and fifteen walkers set out on a walk from Dunton Bassett  and the topic of conversation was mainly holidays.

Entering  Ashby Parva -  poppies and their wonderful colour.
Everybody who had been on holiday had enjoyed their break in various parts of the world but agreed it's always nice to get back home.
The walk to Ashby Parva went by very quickly in very nice weather but disaster struck as we turned into the garden centre drive way .............

Well, they could have told us!
So, what now?
After quick consultation a solution was found. The Holly Bush at the other end of the village was sure to be open??

A sigh of relief  when we got there - it was! We all settled down to a very good cup of coffee/tea and cold drinks.Well, after all that excitement we needed it and not to mention there were a few crossed legs .

Suitably refreshed we all set off on the walk back .

Look out for more from the Cosby Friday Walkers Blog next week.
