OVERVIEW OF PUDUCHERRY
LOCATION
  • The Union Territory of Puducherry consists of four regions, namely Puducherry Region, Karaikal Region, Mahe Region and Yanam Region.
  • All the four regions are at different locations, geographically separated from each other. Map shows the geographic location and position of these four regions.
  • Among these four regions, except Mahe, the other three regions are on the eastern coast of India. Puducherry and Karaikal are on the east coast of Tamil Nadu, while Yanam is on the east coast in Andhra Pradesh. Mahe is located on the Malabar stretch of the west coast in Kerala State.
  • Puducherry covers an area of 294 sq kms and is surrounded on the East by the Bay of Bengal and on the south by Cuddalore District.
  • Karaikal is located 16 km North of Nagapattinam and from Tarangambadi (Tranquibar) 9 km south. On the east of Karaikal lies Bay of Bengal. It encompasses an area of 157 sq. km.
  • Mahe covers an area of 9 sq km. It is located on the south of River Mahe where it falls into the Arabian Sea and on the northern part of Kozhikode district in Kerala.
  • Yanam lies where the river Coringa bifurcates from Godavari and is surrounded on all the sides by the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. It covers an area of 30 sq km.
