The Disciples Church in Maravillas, Mexico is the only church we’ve ever been in that shares a full meal together every Sunday following worship. We couldn’t imagine on our first visit that we would be fed in so many other ways through our relationship with the Church of Maravillas.
Not long after we visited the Church, while eight men were replacing the leaky roof of the Maravillas sanctuary, disaster struck. The nearly completed new roof collapsed, bringing down much of the walls with it. The pastor of the Church, Rosendo Arvizu, who was present on the ground, declares it a miracle that none of the men were injured even slightly.
On our next visit, the rubble had been cleared and a ground breaking for a new building had been planned. The Building Committee had forged ahead with a design and the congregation had approved a budget for the construction of the new sanctuary.
Before Doug’s sermon at the ground breaking, a woman elder of the Maravillas congregation gave her testimony. Esperanza Patena had just survived several rounds of chemotherapy, defying a cancer that had been described as fatal. She had seen the Church overcome challenges in the past and she had faith that the vision of a new sanctuary would soon be fulfilled.
When Pastor Rosendo estimated it would take ten years to raise the funds and complete the project, Esperanza’s son in law, the Building Committee Chair was more optimistic. His business had grown considerably in recent years and he saw the project as an opportunity to show his family’s gratitude. He foresaw completing the construction within three years.
So a congregation with fewer than 100 members girded itself for building a new sanctuary that would seat 300 persons plus with little promise of outside help. To replace the roof, they had waited for funding to come from somewhere else. And after five years of waiting, they had gone ahead on their own. So this time they wouldn’t wait.
Some help from outside the congregation did in fact come. Inspired by the faith and trust of the relatively small congregation, the two

largest churches in San Luis Potosi contributed the equivalent of $2500 US. Global Ministries in the U.S. sent a check and arranged for a Disciple layman with construction experience to journey to Maravillas and do whatever he could to help. When Jim Piper made the second trip of 2000 miles from Idaho on his motorcycle, his dedication to the project led to contributions from his own congregation and from the Disciples Oregon Region. These tangible expressions of solidarity and support for the Maravillas congregation were appreciated as much or more as demonstrations of “the ties that bind” as they were for their monetary value.
Jim’s wife Janette didn’t want to miss out on the hospitality, good food and rich experience her husband was enjoying. During his second stay, she joined him for two weeks and was moved by an outpouring of support for the project at the last worship service she attended. At the time, initial pledges and gifts by the congregation had been used and how they would come up with the funds to continue the building was on everyone’s mind. Janette described what happened:
“At the DOC afternoon service of the Church in Maravillas, Mexico, over 6,000 pesos (about $500 dollars) were raised by the congregation. The members did not want to have the construction work stop. The progress on their new church is sparking the desire to be in by Christmas. The money raised on June 30, 2013, was able to purchase the needed supplies the construction crew needed for the next day. Smiles, praises and tears filled the room as more and more pledges were made. God’s Holy Presence was felt in the room. “
Later on, after a visit by the Mayor to the project, the town treasury contributed 50,000 pesos (around $4,000 US) and a loan was secured. Finishing the balcony and stairways, laying a beautiful tile floor, installing towering windows, the patio with baptistery and other finishing touches took another year. The new sanctuary, named Peniel (“face of God” in Hebrew), was dedicated December 20, 2014, a week short of the two year anniversary of the collapse of the former building.
Soon after the dedication, Esperanza Patena received the news that her cancer had returned. She died before she could resume therapy, and a throng filled the new sanctuary to honor a life devoted to love of God, her family, church and community. The funeral service became a second dedication of the sanctuary that would stand for many present as a testimony to the impact made by a life of deep faith.

Since completing his task as chair of the building committee, Esperanza’s son in law Ramiro Ortiz Pardo has become involved in the community development projects of Disciples churches in two rural communities. He spoke recently at a men’s meeting of the Central Christian Church San Luis Potosi, testifying that the growing earnings from his machine shop are not his alone. In leading the construction of the new Maravillas sanctuary he had come to see himself as “God’s treasurer” and guardian of the profits from his business. Now wherever he can help other Disciple churches of central Mexico serve their communities he is prepared to do so.
For retreats, conventions, and assemblies of Mexican Disciples, Maravillas’ new sanctuary is an ideal setting. It will no doubt be frequently used. But more important than the beautiful space is the enduring lesson the building represents for those who gather there. The Maravillas sanctuary declares that when a community steps boldly forward in faith their labor will not be in vain. Around 95 % of the $116,000 US for the building project came from the members of the small congregation. And that is truly a wonder (“maravilla”).

La Iglesia de los Discípulos en Maravillas, México, es la única iglesia en que hemos estado que comparte juntos una comida completa cada domingo después del culto. No podíamos imaginar en nuestra primera visita que seríamos alimentados de tantos otros modos en el transcurso de nuestra relación con la iglesia de Maravillas.
No mucho después que visitamos la iglesia, mientras que ocho hombres estaban en el proceso de reemplazar el tejado agujerado del santuario de Maravillas, un desastre aconteció. El nuevo tejado casi terminado se cayó, una porción de las paredes con ello. Antes del sermón de Doug en la ceremonia, una anciana de los fieles de Maravillas dio su testimonio. Esperanza Patena apenas acababa de sobrevivir varias rondas de la quimioterapia, desafiando un cáncer que había sido diagnosticado como fatal. Había visto la iglesia vencer desafíos en el pasado y ella estaba segura que la visión de un nuevo santuario muy pronto sería completada.
Cuando Pastor Rosendo estimó que se necesitarían diez años para recaudar los fondos y terminar con el proyecto, el yerno de Esperanza, el Presidente del Comité del Proyecto se expresó más optimista. Su negocio había crecido bastante en años recientes y vio el proyecto como una oportunidad de mostrar la gratitud de su familia. Previó completar la construcción dentro de tres años.
Asi fue que la iglesia con menos de 100 miembros se comprometió con ella misma para construir un nuevo santuario con espacio para 300 persona con ninguna certeza de ayuda externa. Para reemplazar el tejado, habían esperado ayuda financiera de otra parte. Y después de cinco años de la espera, habían seguido adelante solos. Por tanto esta vez no esperarían.
Un poco de ayuda desde fuera de la propia comunidad de fe si se realizó de hecho. Inspirado por la confianza y la fe de los relativamente pocos fieles de Maravillas, las dos iglesias más grandes en San Luis Potosí contribuyeron el equivalente de 2500$ dólares. Ministerios Globales en los Estados Unidos enviaron un cheque e hicieron los arreglos para enviar un laico de los Discípulos con la experiencia en la construcción, para viajar a Maravillas y hacer todo lo que pudiera para ayudar.

Cuando Jim Piper hizo el segundo viaje de poco más de 3,200 kilómetros desde Idaho en su motocicleta, su dedicación al proyecto inspiró a su propia iglesia en Idaho y de los Discípulos en la Región de Oregon a hacer contribuciones también. Estas expresiones tangibles de solidaridad y apoyo hacia los fieles de Maravillas fueron apreciadas tanto o más como demostraciones de “lazos de amor” que por su propio valor monetario en sí.
La esposa de Jim –Janette-, quiso experimentar por sí misma la hospitalidad, comida buena y experiencia rica de la cual su marido disfrutaba. En ese tiempo, las promesas iniciales y las contribuciones de los fieles habían sido ya usadas y la pregunta “¿De dónde vendrían los fondos para seguir edificando?” estaba en la mente de todo el mundo.
Janette describió lo que pasó: “En el culto de la tarde en la iglesia de Maravillas, México, más de 6,000 pesos (aproximadamente 500$ dólares) fueron dados por los fieles. Los miembros no quisieron ver pausadas las obras de construcción. El progreso en la construcción de su nuevo templo provocó el deseo de terminar y poder estar en él para antes de la Navidad. Con el dinero recaudado el 30 de junio de 2013, ya se podían comprar las provisiones y el equipo de construcción necesario para el día siguiente. Las sonrisas, las alabanzas y las lágrimas llenaron el santuario provisional, del mismo modo en que más promesas iban siendo hechas. La Presencia Santa de Dios fue sentida en ese espacio.”

pesos (aproximadamente 4,000$ dólares US) y un préstamo fue asegurado. Terminar el balcón y escaleras, poner un piso de baldosa hermoso, instalar ventanas altísimas, el patio con bautisterio y otros últimos toques, tomó otro año. El nuevo santuario, llamado Peniel (“Rostro de Dios” en hebreo), fue dedicado el 20 de diciembre de 2014, a tan solo una semana del segundo aniversario del colapso del antiguo templo.
Pronto después de la dedicación, Esperanza Patena recibió las noticias que su cáncer había vuelto. Murió antes de que pudiera reanudar la terapia, y una multitud llenó el nuevo templo para honrar una vida dedicada al amor de Dios, de su familia, iglesia y comunidad. El funeral se volvió una segunda dedicación del edificio magnifico que siempre significaría para muchos presentes como testimonio del impacto producido por una vida de fe profunda.
Tras completar su tarea como presidente del Comité del Proyecto, el yerno de Esperanza, Ramiro Ortiz Pardo, se involucró en proyectos de desarrollo comunitario de iglesias de los Discípulos en dos comunidades rurales. En su presentación reciente a los varones en la Iglesia Cristiana Central San Luis Potosí el testificó que las ganancias crecientes de su taller de máquinas no son solamente suyas o únicamente para su familia. En el transcurso de la construcción del nuevo santuario de Maravillas había alcanzado a verse a sí mismo como “un tesorero de Dios” y guarda de las ganancias de su negocio. Ahora se siente listo para ayudar a otras iglesias de Discípulos en el centro de México para que sirvan a sus comunidades.
Para retiros, convenciones y asambleas de Discípulos mexicanos, el nuevo santuario de Maravillas es una localidad ideal. Sin duda será con frecuencia usado. Pero más importante que el espacio hermoso, es la lección inspiradora que el edificio provee a aquellos que se juntan allí. El santuario de Maravillas declara que cuando una comunidad ande vigorosamente adelante animada por su fe, su trabajo no será en vano. Aproximadamente el 95% de los 116,000$ dólares (1, 756, 000.00 pesos mexicanos) para el proyecto de construcción vino solamente de los miembros de la congregación local. Y este, al igual que los demás hechos alrededor, son verdaderas “maravillas”.

It Takes More Than Money/Se Requiere Mas Que el Dinero

December 29 of last year, the Disciples of Christ Church in Maravillas, Mexico saw its new roof on the sanctuary collapse. In the following interview, Maravillas member Ramiro Ortiz Pardo describes the remarkable progress made in rebuilding the sanctuary in the past year. As President of the Building Committee, Ramiro testifies about the congregation’s growth in faith as they marvel at what God and they working together have been able to accomplish.

El 29 de diciembre del ano pasado el nuevo techo de la Iglesia Discipulos
After a month of grieving the loss of their sanctuary, the congregation began making plans to rebuild

Ramiro, give us a recap of the progress and the Church’s experience in rebuilding the sanctuary this past year –
“We’re all surprised that in less than a year we’ve made this kind
of progress on the construction. It is a sign that God has been with us in

With the help we have received how could we get discouraged? We have shown that we are strong in our faith, stronger in reality than we were a year ago, stronger in every way, even in our daily lives, since we now have a charge, a work to carry out for the honor and glory of God. So, finally, the work has become a testimony that we are not alone.
Tell us more about the financial support the Church has received for the construction project.
To be frank, as a Church with no insurance on our buildings we always had the idea that other churches were going to help out. We had faith that we would receive aid, but as it is our project and our responsibility we

We’ve received help from various churches of the Cofraternity (Disciples of Christ in Mexico) and from churches in the U.S. We also received a grant from the current administration of Maravillas township for the construction of the roof. Their donation amounted to 50,000 pesos (around $4000). I visited with the mayor and within a month his administration helped out.
Tell us about your own experience in being involved in this project –
A short while ago I had some good advice from a sister in the Church who
described how God knows whom to give to and whom to bless abundantly. If God gives a lot to someone who doesn’t know how to manage what they have that person is going to spend purely on material things. This sister told me that God had given me resources to manage for Him and for that reason I need to seek for ways to do just that. God knows to whom money should be given. Here on earth I consider myself one of God’s treasurers. All that God has chosen to give me carries for me the message that I am to watch over it, take care of it, manage it for Him. I don’t feel that I own it because in reality it isn’t mine, it belongs to God. Therefore I have to give, I have to put it to work as my sister in Christ advised me. But I also believe that we all have the opportunity to be blessed by our giving even though we don’t have much money.
I appreciate your sharing about the real pleasure you have found in giving and helping others –
I don’t give with an eye on how much you are giving to give. It’s true that I have felt joy in giving. It’s like when one gives to another person 10,000 pesos and that person feels happy, it’s the same happiness that I should feel in giving this amount to help out. I am happy when I can give to someone who needs help. I tell myself that this is my opportunity to show that God is truly in my heart.
There have been times when I wanted to give a testimony about how God has blessed me in many ways through my giving. But I don’t do it because there are others who give testimony about how they give so much and God has returned double the amount to them or how they received a good job after they gave or how with the money received after they gave they were able to buy a machine for their factory. I don’t want to speak about giving in that way because people could think that giving is like I’m investing and also that I’m boasting. I feel this way even though in my nine and a half years of running my company I have never failed to pay my employees on time. We’ve always been able to cover our payroll even at times when it’s been complicated by a lot of bills and unforeseen costs.
What are the Church’s plans for finishing the sanctuary building?
The congregation understands that during the month of December when most people receive a little extra at their work place – a salary increase, a loan, a bonus, a little exta money – we are hoping that this month they’ll be able to give a little more to the project. They aren’t obligated to give more. Only that with what extra they receive this month they will

With 20,000 pesos a month we can put the finishing touches on the roof. And then we’ll proceed step by step inside and out with a window here and something else there until we spend the 300,000 pesos (around U.S. $24,000) that we estimate will be needed for the final stage of the project. That way it won’t look like we’ve abandoned the work. It’s important that we carry on and people won’t forget the need to pitch in. And with the much and the little that people are able to give and the help we receive from others God will enable us to finish the new sanctuary in the year to come.
No one can ever say this new sanctuary is mine; no one can ever say this is mine and I’m going to sell it. At the same time I can say it’s mine, it’s ours, it belongs to us all. So we are going to pledge among ourselves that we will complete the project. The worse would be to say no we can’t go on because I’m sick or I don’t have the money. Money and the material supplies it buys aren’t everything. This sanctuary is being built with something other than money and that’s why I am sure we will finish it before the end of this year.

Ramiro, danos un breve resumen del progreso y la experiencia de la iglesia en reconstruir el santuario este año pasado:
“Estamos muy sorprendidos que en menos de un año hemos hecho esta especie de avance en la construcción. Es una señal de que Dios ha estado con nosotros en este proyecto. Es una señal de que Dios ha estado con nosotros aún con la pérdida de nuestro santuario, aun cuando el techo se derrumbó. Siempre ha estado con nosotros hasta este momento. Es un testimonio frente a toda la comunidad de que nuestra iglesia cree en un Dios poderoso que ha sido capaz de ayudarnos a seguir adelante a pesar de nuestra pérdida. Es un testimonio para todas las iglesias que nos han ayudado con sus ofrendas, es un testimonio de que somos fuertes en la fe con su ayuda.
Con la ayuda que hemos recibido, ¿Cómo podríamos desalentarnos? Hemos demostrados que estamos fuertes en nuestra fe, más fuertes de lo que éramos hace un año, fortalecidos en cada aspecto, incluso en nuestro día a día, ya que ahora tenemos una encomienda, un trabajo que llevar a cabo para la honra y gloria de Dios. Finalmente, el trabajo ha sido un testimonio de que no estamos solos.

Para ser honesto, al ser una iglesia sin seguro en nuestros edificios siempre tuvimos la idea de que otras iglesias iban a ayudar. Teníamos fe de que recibiríamos ayuda, pero como éste era nuestro proyecto y nuestra

Yo visité al presidente dela comunidad y en un lapso de un mes su administración ayudó.
Cuéntanos más acerca de tu experiencia formando parte de este proyecto
Hace poco tiempo recibí un gran consejo de una hermana en la iglesia que describía cómo Dios sabe a quién dar y a quién bendecir en abundancia. Si Dios la da mucho a alguien que no sabe cómo manejarlo, esa persona va a gastarlo enteramente en cosas materiales. Esta hermana me dijo que Dios me ha dado recursos de Él para administrarlos y por esa razón necesito buscar maneras para hacerlo. Dios sabe a quién debe ser dado el dinero.
Aquí en la tierra me considero uno de los tesoreros de Dios. Todo lo que Dios ha escogido darme conlleva un mensaje de que debo observarlo, cuidarlo, administrarlo para Él. No siento que me pertenezca porque realmente no es mío, le pertenece a Dios. Por esa razón yo debo dar, debo poner todo mi esfuerzo justo como la hermana en Cristo me lo aconsejó. Pero también creo que todos tenemos la oportunidad de ser bendecidos por nuestras ofrendas a pesar de que no tengamos mucho dinero.
Agradezco que nos compartas acerca del placer que has encontrado en dar y ayudar a otros-
Yo no doy fijándome en lo que voy a recibir a cambio. Es verdad que he sentido gozo en dar. Es como cuando uno le da a una persona $ 10 000 pesos y esa persona se siente feliz, es la misma felicidad que yo debería sentir al ayudar con esa cantidad. Soy feliz cuando puedo ayudar a alguien en necesidad. Me digo a mí mismo que ésta es mi oportunidad de demostrar que Dios realmente está en mi corazón.
Ha habido tiempos en los que he querido dar testimonio acerca de cómo Dios me ha bendecido en muchas formas a través de mis ofrendas. No lo hago porque hay otros que dan testimonio de cómo han dado tanto a Dios y han recibido el doble o han recibido un buen trabajo después de haber dado o gracias al dinero que recibieron después de haber dado pudieron comprar una máquina para su empresa. No quiero hablar acerca de dar en esa manera porque la gente podría pensar que dar es algo parecido a invertir o podrían pensar que alardeo. Me siento así a pesar de que en los 9 años y medio que he estado dirigiendo mi compañía nunca he dejado de pagarles a mis empleados a tiempo. Siempre hemos sido capaces de cubrir la nómina incluso en ocasiones complicadas por las cuentas por pagar y los costos no previstos.
¿Cuáles son los planes de la iglesia para terminar la construcción del santuario?
La congregación entiende que durante el mes de diciembre la gente recibe un poco de dinero extra en sus trabajos – un aumento de salario, un préstamo, un bono, dinero adicional – Esperamos que en este mes la gente sea capaz de dar un poco extra al proyecto. No están obligados a dar más. Es sólo que con lo extra que reciben este mes ellos mismos querrán dar un poco más.
Si ellos mismos no quieren dar simplemente no deberían hacerlo, eso sería peor. Cuando alguien da porque se siente obligada o su corazón simplemente no está en eso, eso no ayudará. Aquellos que sientas el deseo de hacerlo en sus corazones, adelante. En enero evaluaremos nuestra deuda (actualmente en $300 000 -ed.) y qué tanto ha disminuido o aumentado. En cualquier caso podemos continuar colocando los toques finales en el techo ya que no implica mucho gasto en esa acción.
Con $20 000 pesos al mes podemos poner los toques finales en el techo. Entonces podríamos proceder paso a paso adentro y afuera con una ventana aquí y otra cosa allá hasta que gastemos los $300 000 pesos (alrededor de $24, 000 dólares) que estimamos necesitaremos para completar la etapa final del proyecto. De esta manera no parecerá que hemos abandonado el trabajo. Es importante que sigamos adelante y que la gente no olvide la necesidad que tenemos de avanzar. Y con lo mucho y lo poco que el agente sea capaz de dar y con la ayuda que recibimos de otros, Dios nos permitirá acabar su nuevo santuario en el año que viene.
Nadie podrá decir nunca que este nuevo santuario es mío; nadie nunca podrá decir que es mío y que pienso venderlo. Al mismo tiempo, puedo decir que es mío, es nuestro, nos pertenece a todos. Así que vamos a pedir entre nosotros para así completar el proyecto. Lo peor sería decir que no podemos continuar por enfermedad o falta de dinero. El dinero y los recursos materiales que compra no lo son todo. Este santuario está siendo construido con algo más que dinero y esa es la razón por la que estoy seguro que terminaremos antes de que termine el próximo año.

“No hay mal que por bien no venga” (There is nothing bad that something good cannot come out of it) is a widely quoted Mexican proverb which the Maravillas Disciples Church on the outskirts of San Luis Potosi, Mexico is now living out. Since the collapse of their sanctuary roof on December 29 and subsequent demolition of the building, the congregation has been blessed with the prayers, offerings and presence of fellow Disciples in the area and beyond.
Last month representatives of the two largest congregations in San Luis Potosi brought $2500 to the afternoon worship service at Maravillas. And Pastor Josue Martinez Cisneros, President of the C.I.C.E. Disciples churches assured the members more would be contributed. The Global Ministries Executive for Latin America, Rev. Felix Ortiz, arranged for contruction advisor Jim “Santiago” Piper to spend four weeks helping with the design and planning of the new sanctuary. Jim has now returned to Maravillas to assist with laying the foundation and putting up the new sanctuary’s walls.
These early signs of solidarity, fraternal love and support have enabled the congregation to make fast progress in the construction project. “I am so

grateful for this unexpected, new opportunity to show our love for our Church and our God” Building Committee Chair Ramiro Ortiz Pardo states. And Pastor Rosendo Arvizu Avalos’ youngest child, 23 year old Alvaro, expects the project to result in deepening the congregation’s faith and commitment to serve.
On leaving for home in Caldwell, Idaho just before Easter Jim Piper was determined to return soon. In addition to his satisfaction in helping the congregation plan the new construction, he expressed gratitude for the good care and tasty meals provided daily by church members. “Their hospitality has been amazing” Jim declared on his return in mid April to San Luis Potosi and the Maravillas community. “I have the time and I love it here. How could I not come back?” he adds with a big smile as he chuckles.
The Maravillas congregation looks forward to welcoming other volunteers to participate in the new sanctuary project. The distance from Los Angeles to San Luis Potosi is nearly equal to the mileage from LA to Kansas City. And there are direct flights from Houston to San Luis Potosi.
