HIGH SCHOOL REUNIONS
I must have attended a handful of reunions and come to think of it, all of these have been high
school reunions. I don’t remember any reunion of my elementary class (maybe because we were too
young then to form relationships?). Then at the university, I was not a “barbarian” since I joined an
organization based in another college since my close friends were from the College of Business
Administration, but maybe this is the reason why I never received an invite to reunions from my
college. But high school life is different. There must be something magical in the four or so years
when we were 12 to 17 years old.
Sharon Cuneta in her song talks of missed homeworks, first crushes and eventual heartaches as
well as the joy of being surrounded by friends. High school life was walang kasing saya and every
memory was beautiful, exciting and worth remembering.
Randy David (2011) also writes:
There’s something about the high school years that lingers and gets wired into our psyche.
I guess it has something to do with the fact that at that age, we are just beginning to be selfconscious, to be reflective, and to form impressions of people. And so when we meet at reunions
half a century later. We marvel at how time has changed all of us, but, at the same time, we
stand in awe of what it has failed to erode – the eyes, the voices, the laughter and the affection.
This year’s reunion is a very special one because it also marks a century of Victorino Mapa High
School’s existence. In June 1923, as Manila East High School, it opened its first classes. And since
then it has graduated over a hundred thousand students, including notable alumni such as
Washington Z. SyCip, Supreme Court Chief Justice Artemio V. Panganiban and Rico J. Puno.
Today as we celebrate a hundred years of its existence, we also give our thanks to the school
administrators, the faculty, and other school officials, both past and present. We thank them for
keeping alive the tradition of honor and excellence that has characterized V. Mapa and its
graduates. We also honor this year’s batch of Blue Falcon awardees. Lastly, we also give thanks to
the alumni officers here and abroad who have always tirelessly worked and contributed their time,
talent and treasure to ensure that the tradition of V. Mapa reunions continues.

tagumpay. Masarap balikan ang high school life
\"
every memory kay ganda..... \" Yung naglalakad ka sa
pagpasok dahil walang pamasahe.
terror.
Kawikaan 22:1
THE COVER :
ating paglampas sa 100 taong marka and we cross borders as we face a new centenial!

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Victorino Mapa High School, once dubbed as “Manila East High School”, located in San Rafael, San Miguel, Manila, was
one of the four public high schools which opened in Manila in 1921-1923: alongside “Manila North” in Sta. Cruz , “Manila
West” in Tondo District and “Manila South” in Ermita District.
The first classes started in June,1923, in two wooden buildings at the present site in San Rafael Street, with a total of
fifteen classes in the first , second, and third year levels. The fourth year level was added in 1924; thus, its first graduates
marched in 1925. The pioneer graduating class valedictorian in 1925 was Eugenia Guidote, who later became the wife of
Gil Puyat (who later became a long-time senator of the country).
In 1930, a city ordinance was passed, renaming the public schools after former Chief Justices of the Supreme Court:
The “Manila North High School” became Arellano High School, the “Manila East High School” became the Victorino Mapa
High School, the “Manila West High School” became the Torres High School and the “Manila South High School” became
Araullo High School.
ADMINISTRATION
During its early years, the V. Mapa (Manila East ) High School had American principal teachers – John C. Carl, a
Thomasite, served from 1923 until his death in 1929. Another Thomasite – Lewis Lisk took over as acting principal, until
Mrs. Sarah M. England arrived in 1930 to become the second principal.
With the inauguration of the ten-year Philippine Commonwealth on November 15,1935, the prospect of the Filipinoself-government started. Americans in the education system as well as those in the civil service position had their days
numbered: qualified Filipinosreplaced retiring Americans.
When Mrs. England went for vacation in the United States in 1937, Mr. Francisco Tonogbanua, a noted Filipino poet,
took over as Acting Principal. When Mrs. England returned, she resumed her tenure as Principal and started in 1940, the
school paper, “The Mapazette”, with Mrs. Panalig Belmonte as adviser, and Isagani Cruz, editor. Isagani would later
retire as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
When the war broke out in December 8,1941, all classes were suspended and the school closed for the duration of the
war. When classes resumed in 1945, James P. Burns served as Principal, with Andres Ranola as Assistant Principal until
1947 when Mrs. England came back, Mr. Burns was then transferred to another school. Upon the retirement of Mr.
Ranola, Indolencio Madamba was appointed as Asst. Principal. During Mrs. England’s term, the government acquired
the San Rafaelreal estate for P50,000 from its owners, the Amos Bellisfamily.
When Mrs. England retired in 1951, Mr. Madamba became the first Filipino to serve as Principal. During his tenure, he
set up the Parent-Teacher-Community Association (PTCA), and formed annexes to accommodate the increasing
enrollment of Mapa High School students.
Upon his retirement, Mr. Madamba was succeeded by Mr. Fortunato Asuncion, who served from 1956-1959, and was
in turn succeeded by Mr. Fabian Bugayong who succumbed to heart attack in the same year. In1959, Mr. Clinio Diaz
became Principal and served until 1975, a long and fruitful 15-year tenure: evening vocational classes were started in
1962, evening academic classes begun in 1967, and the new 4-storey concrete building, costing more than P2 Million was
inaugurated in February, 1968. Special Science classes started in 1970.
After Mr. Diaz, came Mrs. Consolacion Esguerra (1975-1980), Miss Rosalina T. Reyes (1980-1991) and Mrs.
Elena Ruiz (1991-1992). In 1992, Mr. Emmanuel Kempis was appointed as Principal, the first Mapa High
alumnus (Class ’55) to occupy the position. He immediately took an active part in the formation of the Mapa
Foundation, Inc. – the financing arm of the V. Mapa High School Alumni Association. The principals followed
thereafter were Ms. Teresita Amasol, Dr. Alice Blas, Dr. Imelda Mendez, Dr. Tolentino, and Mr. John Butch
Locara. The current principal is Mr. Robert P. Velasquez.
Through the years, V. Mapa (Manila East) High School has produced thousands of alumni, a great number of
them attaining prominence in their chosen fields: public administration and government service, judiciary and
law, music and the arts, commerce and industry, military and police service, literature and journalism, banking
and finance, social work and humanitarian services, science and technology, architecture and engineering,
human resources development and many other fields.
THE START OF THE V. MAPA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
With the significant number of graduates, it is no surprise that an alumni association was created. According
to records, the first graduating class immediately formed an alumni association in 1925. An official Mapa High
School Alumni publication in 1959 recorded that Atty. Arturo A. Alfariz, a member of class 1925, a prominent
lawyer who later became Solicitor General, was the Association President from 1931-1951. Another
prominent lawyer and Bataan veteran Atty. Abelardo Subido, of Class 1931 succeeded him.
Records also revealed that in the years 1941-1975, the other distinguished personalities who were active in
one position or another were Justice Antonio Barredo, Justice Milagros A. Herman, Dean Armando B. Isip
and Mrs. Consuelo Salazar-Perez.
The Articles of Incorporation filed and duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on the
29th of September, 1978 during the term of Police General Gerardo Tamayo of Class 1940, formally organized
the Association.
Through the years, the Alumni Association has had its ups and downs, sometimes hibernating for a few
years, but rising again with renewed vigor like a Phoenix reborn.
In 1982, the elected Board of Directors, assisted and supported by a few very active classes, made serious and
frantic preparation for Mapa High School’s Diamond Anniversary in February,1983. From then on, efforts
snowballed into the present where the annual homecomings gather more than 700 alumni every year.
Twenty (20) alumni have served as presidents in later years and these were :
1975-1982 P/Gen. Gerardo G. Tamayo, ’40 (+) 1982-1984 Mr. Antero G. Morales, ’47 (+)
1984-1985 Ms. Josephine O. Balderian, ’60 1985-1989 P/Gen. Ernesto L. Diokno, ’56 (+)
1989-1990 Engr. Felicito Rey Signo, ’55 1990-1991 Judge Manuel Dumatol, ‘49
1991-1993 Judge Vicente S. Pulido, ’48 1993-1995 Mr. Orlando S. Zorilla, ‘59
1995-1997 Atty. Leonides S. Bernabe Jr. ’54 1997-1998 Mr. Miguel S. Picache, ’49 (died in office)
1998-1999 Mr. Fortunato P. Aguas, ’40 1999-2001 Mr. Benjamin P. Agleham, ’55 (+)
2001-2003 Ms. Eunice Bolisay-Vargas, ’58 (+) 2003-2005 Arch. Mariano M. Delos Santos, ‘72
2005-2007 Mr. Benjamin P. Agleham, ’55 (+) 2007-2009 Ms. Eunice Bolisay-Vargas, ’58 (+)
2009-2011 Mr. Renato I. Hernandez, ’69 2011-2013 Mr. Alejandro Evangelista, Jr. ’60 (+)
2013-2019 Dr. Bienvenido M. Abante, Jr. ’68 2019-Present P/Col. Rodrigo R. Bonifacio, ‘76
The current President, Retired Police Colonel, Rodrigo R. Bonifacio, is a member of Class ’76. Because of the
close camaraderie among the alumni, more and more classes have enthusiastically formed their own individual
class organizations, not just to renew nostalgic friendships, but also to be able to give and share their blessings to
their Alma Mater.

OF A YEAR, PLANT A SEED; IF IN TERMS OF TEN YEARS; PLANT TREES; IF IN TERMS OF 100 YEARS, TEACH THE
PEOPLE.”
“A TEACHERAFFECTS ETERNITY; HE CAN NEVER TELL WHERE HIS INFLUENCE STOPS.”
Historically, Wikipedia states that V MAPA is one of the oldest public high schools inManila, and has produced a formidable list
of successful graduates in various fields since its foundation in 1923. Along with Manila Science, Ramon Magsaysay, Manuel
Roxas, and Arellano High Schools, V. MAPA still offers rigorous Special Science courses to selected top students. Until today, it
is considered one of the top schools in Manila in terms of its performance in achievement tests and competitions. Wiki
also stated that in 2007, Mapa was named one of the cleanest schools in Manila. It also had the biggest student population
of 11,481 with a faculty of 488. At present, students enjoy a big and well-equipped auditorium, now known as \"Bulwagang
Velayo\" named after oneof its most notable alumni.
More than being proud alumni of this well-respected institution, we shouldalways feel indebted and appreciative of how we
were mentored, and pay forward so that this priceless legacyof nurturing brilliant minds and God-fearing young people will
continue. I enjoin you, fellow, distinguished alumni here today to still think of V MAPA as our “secondhome” - a place where we
returnyear after year, as the Lord gives us the strength to be here despite our young ages. Blessed with resources to give, let us
actively share and take part in its noble aim of producing more outstanding graduates that will not only make us proud but the
entire Filipinorace as well.
My warmest congratulations and well–wishes to everyone behind the fruition of this grand centennial celebration!

This is a significant day to create an endearing history for all who cherish the past - a look
back in restoring life’s essentials – faith , love, and hope. In so doing, we obtain and sustain
immeasurable salutation and gratitude to our refuge, The Victorino Mapa High School, where
most significant school life’s experiences were moulded.

I am humbled and honored to be a part of this historical event of Victorino Mapa High
School as we commemorate our Centennial Anniversary.
The former Manila East High School has produced line of successful graduates and notable
alumni like Arturo M. Tolentino, the 9th Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines
among others.
This milestone makes us proud to be Mapans and celebrate our Alma Mater’s great
victory for the past 100 years.
This grand celebration is certainly a momentous event for the whole Mapa High School
community as we reach 100 years which is indeed remarkable. May this year’s theme: “Mapa
: Pagpupugay sa 100 Taon ng Dangal, Husay at Tagumpay” serves as a vehicle to strive more
and inspired by the values of integrity, honor and excellence in achieving triumph for our
school and country as well.
As we face another fruitful years of existence, I hope that we remain steadfast to be a
blessing to others as we chart the course of our journey towards another success. May this
event uphold the strong bond and unity to all of us. I also take this opportunity to convey
my gratitude to our beloved teachers as they continue to mold our students and future
leaders of our country.
Congratulations and I wish everyone a jubilant and significant centennial celebration.

A heartfelt congratulations to the alumni, students, and in particular to the Blue Falcon

We have reached a significant milestone in the history of our beloved Alma Mater,
celebrating 100 years of providing high quality education and staying true in honing
potentials who have become and will be assets to our beloved Philippines. With this year’s
theme: “MAPA: Pagpupugay sa 100 Taon ng Dangal, Husay at Tagumpay,” we look forward
to continuing the tradition of excellence, honor and integrity as we continue to contribute
to nation-building. This year’s theme is especially relevant as our country slowly rises from
the 3-year pandemic that has besieged Filipino families. In these dire times, may we
continue to be a source of positivism, inspiration, and hope to our brethren.
Together, let us move forward and may the Lord bless the work of our hands.

We are all lucky and blessed! Yes! All of us here today that is one in spirit in
celebrating our centennial anniversary ! Err, not the centennial of the school but the
100th birth anniversary of Justice Victorino Montaño Mapa! (The school's name
changed from Manila East High School to Victorino Mapa High School four months later
in June,1923). Only once in our lifetime that we got to celebrate a centennial (but lucky
me to have also witnessed and attended the centenary of P. Burgos Elem. School in
2019!) That's why I promised that when it's our Alma Mater's time to celebrate, I will
make it 'todo' and 'banat' (ala Ma'am Gina Lopez' s strategy)!
With only four months to prepare after our 2022 Grand Reunion last October
23,2022, we need to be RUSHians and URGENTinians. We will make it the most
memorable, bongacious and experience of a lifetime event! We will extract the single
juice of our minds to come up with the best and memorable programs and activities, pull
out resources to the last centavos to help the school and the students and push our
strength to the limits to enjoin every body to come, have fun and celebrate! Hence, my
dearest batchmates, classmates, and schoolmates let's enjoy and give our best shot this
Centennial! Offer what you can give to our Alma Mater - your time, your talent and your
treasures. As they say, it's payback or should I say, pay it forward time!

The Victorino Mapa High School Alumni Association, Incorporated held its 2022 Grand Alumni Homecoming last
October 23, 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic had caused all of us some impediments and obstacles to celebrate the usual
annual event every last Sunday of February. Although this tradition was forced to change by fortuitous event, the
leadership of our organization tried to assure that there will be no gap for every Jubilarians to celebrate their own class as
a matter of right under V. Mapa High School Alumni Association Incorporated. This is true because the incumbent Board of
Trustees and Officers of our association remain steadfast in serving the alumni unconditionally and this Centennial
celebration is a testament of our hardship and dedication to our Alma Mater.
There is no moment for rest and recreation to all V. Mapa High School Alumni Association Working team as we tried to hit
the deadline for the Centennial event. Every day after the 99th Anniversary of Victorino Mapa High School, the Alumni
Officers continue to work to make this big event a success and every Saturday the Board of Trustees and Officers hold the
regular meeting with the Class Representatives and altogether craft the plans and program for the Grand Centennial
Celebration.
The leadership of alumni executive council had already reserved the Crowne Plaza Hotel as the venue for 2023 Centennial
Grand Alumni Homecoming and Recognition of Outstanding Alumni and Mapa Blue Falcon awardees.
As your President, I am happy to report to you several significant projects initiated by the Board of Trustees and Officers.
Through the leadership of our Alumni Association, we were able to seek the help of Manila’s 6th District Representative
Honorable Bienvenido Abante’68, my predecessor, for the speedy approval of the following projects for our Alma Mater:
1. Construction of Overhead Water Tank with Concrete Cistern facility P1,831,000.00;
2. Purchase of Brand New Elevator for New Building P2,120,000.00;
3. Renovation of Picache Hall P1,890,000.00;
4. Renovation of Blue Falcon Honor Society Hall P2,950,000.00; and
5. Construction of PWD Ramp at the New Building P285,000.00
The renovation and retrofitting projects as of this reporting is 100% completed. In addition to this report, the Board of
Trustees and Officer are proud to announce that appropriate representation through Board Resolution was realized to the
City Council of Manila Local Government Unit to rename San Rafael Street where our school is situated to Chief Justice
Victorino Mapa to mark its 100 years of its existence as one of the oldest public school in the City.
These and many more projects will be carried out in the succeeding years which are geared towards the delight and usage
of the students, the faculty as well as the alumni, when we hold our meetings and special alumni occasions.
I enjoin all alumni and other stakeholders to give back and give more to our beloved Victorino Mapa High School. We
should never get tired of helping and giving back because this is where we etched our humble beginning. Our school
deserves all help and assistance it can get from all of us.

The Blue Falcon is an institutional symbol of V. Mapa High School.
What is a falcon? It is more than just a bird. It is a hawk, a well-trained hawk. The
trainers of falcons are called “falconers”. We are the “falcons” and our beloved
teachers are the “falconers”. It is blue because blue is the official color of our school.
The blue falcon award is given to a Mapan in recognition of his/her success in the
fulfillment of a life’s mission or vocation. It represents outstanding achievements of
alumni in the Mapa Tradition of Excellence. The purpose of the award is to provide
role models to young people, especially to Mapa students, inspiring them to live by
the values of honesty (katapatan), industry (kasipagan), and nationalism (pagkamakabayan).
We are proud in the company of fellow Mapans like Senator Arturo Tolentino+,
Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban, SGV Founders Washington SyCip+ and Alfredo
Velayo+, National Artists of the Philippines Jose Joya+ and Cirilo Bautista+, DBM
Secretary Salvador Enriquez, Jr+. , Sister Fides Arambulo+, and Outstanding Medical
Practitioner Cornelio Banaag Jr, just to name a few.
The first awarding of outstanding alumni happened in 1983. They were the first
batch of blue falcons. The next set came in only 9 years after, but the yearly effort to
implement the awards program began in 1993. For this year and the recent years ,
the event has been the responsibility of the Mapa Blue Falcon Honor Society under
the able leadership of Bishop Reuben Abante.
Let us greet and congratulate the 2021 Blue Falcon Awardees.
Orlando S. Zorilla ’59 is a Blue Falcon Awardee of 1992. He is the Founder
of the Mapa Blue Falcon Honor Society and the V. Mapa HS Foundation. He
is Former President of V. Mapa High School Alumni Association.

Mataas na paaralan
Ng Mapa aming mahal
Narito kami’t nagpupugay
Pag-asa nitong bayan.
Ang inyong pamamatnubay
Ay di naming malilimutan
Sa landas naming tinatahak
Ang aral mo’y liwanag.

Sa tagumpay na yung hangad,
Sisikaping magsisipag.
Panuntunan sa paglakad,
Bawat gawa’y maging tumpak.
At ang inyong pinapangarap,
Maging ganap sa pagtupad.
Pag-asa mo sa bayang hinaharap,
Ay sa ami’y nasasadlak.

Here in the city
There stands a school exemplary
Come and you will see,
A school of integrity
All in her is fine,
Happiness, fair lay reign all the time
You don’t feel blue all day
Every hour but enjoy love with bright sunshine.
Cheer and sing the sweet song,
Sing it o’er again, it’s sweet melody;
Of Philippine
Let us march together
And shout “Mapa High”
Let us blow the bugles;
Roll the drum alike.
(Chorus)
Mapa High is shining
No school can surpass
Where’er in the Orient;
Teachers have brain
Mapa High is moulding
The youth of the land
Mapa High is turning
Graduates all prepared for life.
(New) Mapa High, Mapa High
Our Alma Mater dear
We’re here, the hope of the land to obey, or to
lead
Never shall we forget
The precious gifts bestowed on us
The rightful path to truth that we all seek
The love of Motherland
Onward, onward we shall march
For their sake dear Mapa High
Guided by what is right
Onward, onward we shall march
Onward, onward to victory
With loyalty and dignity
Onward we shall march to victory for Mapa
High.

Admiral Feliciano A. Angue began his chosen career with marked distinction by
being one of only ten (10) direct-from-high-school aspirants to be admitted to the Philippine Military
Academy (PMA) at that time, leaving Victorino Mapa High School even prior to the 1973 commencement
rites. Assigned to the Navy after his PMA training and studies, he steadily rose through the echelons of
the AFP's chain of command, consistently earning distinctive recognition for outstanding service
performance and dedication, domestically as well as on his foreign assignments. Indicative of his
leadership and sterling performance in military service spanning over 37 years, Admiral Angue garnered
an enviable collection of awards among which are:
• Seven (7) Distinguished Service Stars for distinguished command and leadership rendered in
positions of major responsibility
• Two (2) Gold Cross Medals for gallantry in action involving risk of life against numerically superior enemies of the state
• Gawad sa Kaunlaran Award for outstanding community service and accomplishments
• Two (2) Distinguished Navy Cross Medals for extraordinary accomplishments in naval combat operations
• Five (5) Bronze Cross Medals for major accomplishments in combat and special operations
• Six (6) Military Merit Medals with Bronze Spearhead device for the accomplishment of the assigned mission in combat operations
21 Military Merit Medals for various meritorious accomplishments
• Mindanao-Sulu Campaign Medal and Ribbon
• Anti-Dissidence Campaign Medal and Ribbon
• Luzon Campaign Medal and Ribbon
• Visayan Campaign Medal and Ribbon
• Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Medal and Ribbon
• United Nations Service Medal awarded by LTGEN JOHN MURRAY SANDERSON, Force Commander United Nations Transitional
Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC)
• Cambodia Peacekeeping Operation Medal ~ Certificate of Award from United Nations, New York, USA
• AFP Civic Action Medal and Ribbon
• Sagisag ng Ulirang Kawal Award for distinguished performance of non-military and community-related development activities.
In recognition of his sterling leadership and accomplishments at various levels of command, he rose steadily in extraordinary fashion
starting from Ensign/2nd Lieutenant up to a Three-star-General Position as Commander of the National Capital Region Command, the
major AFP Area Command tasked to defend the seat of government.
He was promoted on the spot to the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade/Captain after a major accomplishment in combat/special
operations in 1981, jumping over officers three years more senior than him.
He was also a ‘Jumper” in the promotions to Lieutenant Commander/Major as well as to Commander/Lt Colonel. His major “jump” was
as Captain/Colonel when the Promotion/Selection Board strictly applied the Quantified Promotion Scheme and implemented the deep
selection parameters giving more importance to performance, accomplishments and service reputation than just mere seniority, which
allowed him to overtake again officers three years more senior than him.
He decided to optionally retire in 2010, two years early from mandatory retirement (upon the age of 56, which would have been in
2012) in order to venture into the corporate world and a sudden new career in banking, where he leveraged his military skills and
leadership and continued without losing a beat his work habit of consistently earning praise and recognition for his capabilities and
accomplishment of duty.
He has been twelve years in his second career in the private sector and holds the rank of Executive Vice-President of a Universal
Bank up to present.
\"All these capabilities were reflected in his career record as a naval officer and a gentleman, particularly as a Lieutenant Commander when he
served as the commanding officer of Maritime Operations Ream at the Ream Naval base in Cambodia during the United Nations Transitional
Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) Mission in 1993, and hailed by his UN military superiors for his competence as a Field Commander . In his
various intelligence postings locally previous to that, he subsequently earned the Naval Intel Security Group (NISG) of the Year Award (for
Mindanao regions 9, 10 and 12 in 1994), as well as the Most Outstanding Officer Award while serving with Naval Forces North (Northern
Luzon). His dedication to military service and moral principles was tested while serving in the Naval District of the Western Mindanao
Command ~ when he and his men seized PhP150-million worth of smuggled goods going into Zamboanga City early in 1994, but were offered
bribes amounting to PhP5 million to let it slide. Flatly refusing the bribes, however, he instead charged those involved and culpable for the
smuggling operations and bribery attempt among the naval, customs and other law enforcement authorities in Zamboanga City ~ who in turn
also brought up trumped charges against him and his unit for exposing the smuggling ring. The Department of Justice itself later stepped in to
quash the harassment cases against him for breaking up the smuggling operations, and earned for him the solid reputation of being
incorruptible in the line of duty.
\"In terms of civic-military operations, Admiral Angue also distinguished himself during emergencies, such as for the relief and rehabilitation
efforts in the towns of Real, Infanta and Nakar, Quezon Province in the wake of a calamitous typhoon in 2004, as the Commander of Naval
Task Force 31 in Southern Luzon. Also noteworthy was his stint as Defense and Armed Forces Attaché (DAFA) to the Court of Saint James
(Great Britain) from 2000 to 2003 where he was awarded a Distinguished Service Star for representing the country well and for spearheading
the ASEAN Defense Attache Forum amongst over 200 Defense Attaches representing various countries around the world.
Upon his return to the country in August that year he was called to help defuse the Oakwood Mutiny in Makati City. By 2006 up to 2008 he
commanded the Navy's Ready Force (National Maneuver Force) at Sangley Point, Cavite, putting under his supervision seven (7) Naval Task
Forces nationwide, thus earning for him his first star-rank (Commodore). And in rapid succession, he served as the Deputy Commander and
eventually Commander of the Philippine Fleet also in 2008, raising him up to his second star-rank (Rear Admiral) when he became Chief of
Naval Staff of the Philippine Navy. Finally, his 3-star Command came with his designation as Commanding General of the National Capital
Region Command-AFP, which also gave him operational military supervision during the 2010 national elections as the first automated voting
system, to ensure honest, orderly and peaceful conduct of the citizens' exercise of suffrage in the NCR. But even earlier, as Commander of
Naval Task Force 62 in Tawi-Tawi back in 2004, he had done the same for the national elections that year for the local area, ensuring peace
and security amidst feuding Muslim factions, including attempted election rigging efforts in that region, while also effectively preventing the
disruptive operations of the notorious terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group. The 2004 election was the most peaceful and honest election ever in the
history of the province.
\"However, as a Navy officer his core competency of commanding ships at sea was also showcased by his several stints as CO of different
onboard assignments of various naval vessels ~ the highlight of which was his Captaincy of the Patrol Frigate BRP Emilio Jacinto in the
Kalayaan Islands area of operations, when he interdicted two Chinese Militia Vessels illegally conducting activities in Philippine waters,
capturing one and sinking the other. All these achievements in his military career ~ and not even counting those in his second career in the
banking sector after retiring from the Navy ~ manifest Admiral Angue's personal history symbolizing a proud representation of V. Mapa High
School as its 'progeny' of exponents for what it stands for: 'Pagpupugay sa 100 Taon ng Dangal, Husay at Tagumpay' during this year's
Founding Anniversary celebration.\"
\"Along the way in his distinguished record of military service, he took up various trainings
and studies to further hone his operations and command capabilities, including foreign
courses to broaden his horizons ~ starting in 1981 with various Naval intelligence training
courses, tactical trainings in Underwater Operations, Marine Airborne and Jump Master
courses, Close-quarter-battle and Anti-terrorist Operations as well as Foreign Service
Attaché Course, always landing at no. 1 finishes; also taking the Best Research Award for
his Commandant’s paper on UN Peacekeeping Operations in the Joint Command and Staff
Course. Foreign training courses were attended in the United States, including Naval
intelligence from the Fleet Intelligence Training Center - Pacific in San Diego, California; an
Anti-terrorist Operations Course at the US Special Operations Group at Camp Beauregard in
Louisiana (getting the Top Shooter Award); the Crisis Response Team Training in
Washington DC, at which he took the Leadership Award; and at the Naval Staff Course in the
Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island where he also graduated “With Distinction”
(1996). Other graduate courses he undertook included the Senior Executive Management
Course at the Asian Institute of Management; International Relations, Philippine Foreign
Policy and United Nations and International Organizations at the Foreign Service Institute of
the Department of Foreign Affairs, and completing by 1997 his Master's Degree, major in
ADMIRAL FELICIANO A. ANGUE Defense and Strategic studies at the AFP Joint Command and Staff College.
THE MAPAZETTE and ANG GABAY
A Paper Was Born and Where It Is Now: The Mapazette and Ang Gabay History- Isabella M. Galang
Victorino Mapa (Manila East) High School featured an American principal teacher during its early
years, John C. Carl, a Thomasite who served from 1923 until his death in 1929. Lewis Lisk, another
Thomasite, served as interim principal until Mrs. Sarah M. England came in 1930 to become the
second principal. After a short vacation in the United States, she resumed her position as Principal
and experimented with the teaching of journalism. Since it proved successful, the other four existing
high schools in the city followed suit. These were Araullo, Torres, Arellano, and Abad Santos high
schools, in that order.
In 1940, Mrs. England founded “The Mapazette” which became the school’s official school organ
with Mrs. Panalig Belmonte as adviser and Isagani Cruz as the first editor-in-chief. It was later
followed by its Filipino counterpart “Ang Gabay” in 1946. In the journalism classes, the budding
writers were trained to write various types of news, feature stories, interviews, speech reports,
editorials and editorial columns, sport stories, critical reports, interpretative and depth news,
development news, and other forms.
In 1948, the Mapazette participated in various competitions and won Third Prize in School Press
Conference Anti-TB Drive. In the following years, the school organ won at the First Secondary School
Newspaper Contest with Ms. Carmen Lejano, adviser and Editor-in-Chief Manuel G. de Leon. In
March 1950, Mapazette made a clean sweep of the group contest in the second annual Public School
Secondary press conference held in Baguio, winning The Herald trophy for The Best School
Newspaper of the Year and the pennants for the Best Layout, Best Editorial, Best Literary Page, Best
Sports Reporting, Best News Reporting, and Best National Language Section. It was a feat written in
the history books of Victorino Mapa High School.
On September 1954, an article entitled “A Paper Was Born” was published and included in the
year’s newspaper as it looked back on the founding of the Mapazette in its 14th anniversary of the
official organ. Isagani A. Cruz, the first editor-in-chief stated his special interest in its growth and
development since the editing of its first issue. Alberto Linco, the current editor-in-chief during the
1954 publication stated, “We stepped in when it [the Mapazette] was already in the limelight, it’s our
job to push it upward or hold it where it is.”
The Mapazette and Ang Gabay continues to carry through the name of the school organ in various
journalism competitions both group and individual all around the country. Ang Gabay paves its way
in the National School Press Conference as it ranked 2nd Place Best School Paper in 1988, 3rd Place
in 1989, 4th Place in 1999, 6th Place in 2000, 9th Place in 2011, Qualifier in 2017 and 2019, and 3rd
Place in Regional School Press Conference.

Tribute to Journalism
Simply amazing is how I view the impact of journalism in the school
campus. With The Mapazette and the Ang Gabay as the official organs
for the VMHS for almost a hundred years, news, features, editorials, and
trivia have floated much like flags raised full mast, and half-mast to keep
everyone abreast with what's current and important. Our budding
journalists were on a constant roll with many ongoing activities that they
had to participate in and win, and write about. Definitely challenging,
time consuming, and no small task considering that they also had to pass
their high school subjects.
What could have driven our young journalists is their enthusiasm and
adaptability to manage whatever limited resources are available. With
their inherent virtues and potentials, their training and constant practice
kept them winning in whatever levels they competed and brought (\"home
the bacon\" so to speak) to the VMHS trophies, medals, and awards of
recognition of journalism prowess.
For this centennial, we remember the highlights of the campus organs
The Mapazette and Ang Gabay and remain in gratitude for all advisers
and staffers throughout the years that kept the VMHS flag flying high.
Aianna Ellaijha S. Timola
As a VMHS student in journalism, my
special ability was to focus information on
current events and issues. It enabled me to
perform my duty as a responsible Filipino
citizen and a fighter against misinformation.
My instructors in Journalism awakened I me
a curiosity and deep insightful
understanding of life.
VMHS is a home for aspiring journalists
who may become the country's future ally in
sharing relevant information towards a
universal common good.
TRIBUTE TO JOURNALISM
he surge of euphoria from hearing the OBB music rising is like seeing the stage curtain opening in a
theatre play. For radio broadcasters, this serves as a signal that we’re already on air. I’ll never forget the time when I
first competed in a radio broadcasting contest. I nearly lost my voice and I deeply regretted not taking better care
of it. I was just grateful that my co-broadcasters and our respective school paper advisers were very supportive and
understanding. Being an ambivert, it wasn’t really easy for me to approach people so I was delighted to find out
that my teammates were warm and welcoming. They eventually became my friends. I was really blessed to
become a representative of Victorino Mapa High School. The whole experience helped me to improve not only my
skills but also my confidence in myself.
I was lacking confidence in my writing and communication skills when I started junior high school since I had
experienced a lot of rejection in my elementary. When I was in third year, our school paper adviser at the time, Mrs.
Claire Rivas, invited us to join journalism. Because of my low self-esteem, I was hesitant to join. It wasn't until a
summer camp before fourth year that I actually decided to pursue journalism. I was given an opportunity to read a
radio broadcasting script with the guidance of Mrs. Rivas. It sparked my interest. I developed a burning desire to
learn the fundamentals of radio broadcasting. The kindness of our school paper adviser also melted my doubts
away. I later auditioned to become the representative of our school in the Radio Broadcasting Contest-District
Level, however, someone else was chosen. She’s a friend of mine and she’s very deserving of the position so I was
happy nonetheless. I was then tasked to become the host of the competition but since we didn’t have enough
representatives, the school paper advisers decided to let me audition. They informed me that I was chosen to
compete. In the Division Level, I won 3rd Best News Presenter but simply getting the chance to become a
representative was already more than a dream come true. I truly learned a lot.
Mrs. Rivas taught me a valuable lesson during the competition that I still carry even up to this day: God sees
those who put in the effort, and He will reward them accordingly. I recalled that we continued with our training
even during breaks and holidays. There were times that I was having breakdowns since I feel very frustrated with
myself. I was glad I didn’t give up. We might not see the improvement yet but just like what they say, a small
progress is still progress.
Eventually, I became more confident speaking in front of a large number of audiences. I even hosted several
school events. Writing for the school paper also made me realize that as a campus journalist, I have the power to
amplify the voices of my fellow citizens. Journalism also taught me to stand firm against injustice. Even with the
threat of red-tagging, to spread awareness, I've recently started posting creative non-fiction stories on social media
that tackles major issues that our nation is currently dealing with. To Mrs. Rivas and to Victorino Mapa High School,
thank you so much for believing in me and for giving me an opportunity to grow as an individual. I will use the
values you instilled in me to serve the country. Laban lang para sa bayan !

As a staffer of The Mapazette for 1968-69, I wrote news and articles for the paper with
the tireless assistance and guidance of our dear advisor Ms. Carmen Santiago. She always
critiqued my writings and gave advice to make them more meaningful. She made my job
easy and fun and made me feel good about myself.
I thank Ms. Santiago for my joyous moments as a Mapazette staffer. Looking back, that
was one memorable part of my high school life.

Bb. Gloria Reyes was a great Journalism adviser. Her superb way of leaching must have
honed much of my skills and knowledge of Journalism. She also helped me to develop
self-confidence and appreciation of time and work that is well done.
I could have been a lawyer like my father but God seemed to have me aspire to
become a writer instead. Having had Ms. Reyes as my adviser helped me understand how
to give my best always at any given time I am asked to name in what's asked of me. That
served me in my later years as a writer and trainer.
To all Journalism advisers who guided the buds into bloom, much thanks for your
patience and expertise. Working with an adviser like Ms. Claire Rivas was a privilege and honor. I admired her
amiable ways in dealing with her journalism students who worked with us as Team
Centennial. She patiently coaxed everyone to remember what she has taught and until
the very end Ms. Rivas nurtured each and everyone in the team with her assurance that
they could accomplish the tasks given.
Journalism advisers, like Ms. Rivas, are treasures that continue to warm their students'
hearts and minds even when years would pass. Victorino Mapa High School was fortunate
to have you who have guided several students to their moments in different levels of
competitions which made the school shine with winners. Cheers Ms. Rivas.

rs. Claire Rivas served as my Journalism teacher from
Grade 7 to Grade 8. Our time working together was cut
short due to her retirement but she did not fail to inspire
me to continue writing for news and editorial. Mrs. Rivas
reminded me that a journalist is never late to the now
and we are responsible for distributing information to the
masses. Thus, we should not laze around waiting to be
served with the information we need in order to publish
articles. A fond memory with her was when she trained
my then Grade 7 self to compete in a column writing
competition against Grade 8 students. I was nervous but
her guidance helped me land 2nd place during that
DSPC.
The pandemic halted a lot of our progress on my Grade
9 to 10th Journalism class. Yet Mrs. Gina Mina-Sarsagat
continued to teach us even if it was only through the
screen. She encouraged my peers and I to keep on
practicing and producing articles to prepare whenever
the next DSPC would come around. It was truly helpful
since a lot of my co-writers felt physically and
psychologically trapped during COVID-19.

“My voice is my bread and butter, it helped
me to achieve the things I have today like my
house, and now I need to let my children
finish their studies na lang”
Ms. Magtibay is forever grateful to Victorino Mapa High School for the quality education it provided her,
which prepared her for higher education. According to her, she was so blessed that she was mentored by
Mapa’s efficient, effective and dedicated teachers.
Journalism became a part of Ms. Magtibay’s life. She was a Filipino journalism teacher at Elpidio Quirino High
School in Bacood, Sta. Mesa, Manila, for 16 years. She started as the adviser of Ang Munting Gintong Panitik,
and later, she was designated as the adviser of Ang Gintong Panitik. One of her achievements was when Ang
Gintong Panitik won first place in the Pahina ng Editoryal in the National Secondary Schools Press Conference
(NSSPC). Also, during her last year in Quirino High School, almost all her student-delegates in the NSSPC won;
one of them got first place in Pagsulat ng Balita.
In addition, she also said that journalism is very important. According to her, journalism is important to every
student because high school journalism students are trained to collect data or information systematically. In
addition, to communicate their ideas, thoughts, and opinions effectively, important skills they can use in
whatever course they plan to take in college. Journalism can help students in the future.
\"In writing an article, whether it is a news article, an editorial, or a feature
article, always be sincere. Tell the truth. It is hard to establish credibility. Your
readers or listeners will lose their interest in your message once they sense that
you are not telling the truth,” - Atty. Magtibay.

pamamahayag at lingkod bayan.
Development (DSWD) Office of the Officer-in-Charge na si Undersecretary Edu Punay.
pahayagan at midya.

MULA CAMPUS DYORNO HANGGANG
SA TUNAY NA MUNDO
BY CHRISMAR LATTAO
From dominating the sphere of pens and papers to triumphing in the intricacies of mathematical equations, Engineer
Gecille Robles Mallillin is a testament to the excellence and exceptional caliber of Mapan-grown campus journalists.
During her campus journalism stint, Mallillin had already shown tremendous dexterity. In the 1999 Manila Division Schools
Press Conference, she was hailed as the highest individual pointer by winning in three different categories simultaneously.
Mallillin finished at the podium spots for Editorial Writing, and Copyreading and Headline Writing in second and third places,
respectively. Meanwhile, she also placed fourth in Feature Writing.
However, despite the tremendous display of Mallillin’s versatile high-caliber journalistic skills, her dominating wins were
not without challenging bumps. She encountered self-doubt along the way and also addressed the lack of resources as a
major struggle. Yet true to her Mapan-bred spirit, Mallillin defied the odds and soared to be Manila’s top campus journalist.
“A huge part of this victory [these victories] was Ma’am [Alice] Almendarez who pushed and motivated me, especially
during the times when I doubted myself,” Mallillin said. She added that the outpouring of determination to win and bring
honor to VMHS triumphed over the limited resources.
Along with her superb performance is her tremendous devotion to serving her fellow students, also through journalistic
means. Mallillin handled the campus Filipino newspaper “Ang Gabay” at the helm as its Punong Patnugot (Editor-in-Chief)
from 2000-2001. Retrospectively, she mentioned that managing the school paper was one of the highlights of her high
school life.
\"“I learned and experienced so many things, both positive and
negative. I had the responsibility to be more aware of what was
happening around me and VMHS,” - Engr. Mallillin

The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic did not halt
the triumphs of Victorino Mapa High School’s journalists. This
was clearly shown when four Grade 10 students from the
school won DSPC competitions against other institutions back
in 2021. Their victory showed the fruits of their labor after
having to go through extensive online training, keeping up with
current events, and mastering the art of fact-checking.
Aianna Ellaijha S. Timola, 6th Place in News Writing; Abigaile P.
Tolon, 8th Place in Editorial Writing; Vincel O. Farma, 6th Place
in Pagsulat ng Balita; and John Lauren C. Villareal, 4th Place in
Pagsulat ng Balitang Pampalakasan. Additionally, Farma also
obtained 4th Place in ExplainedPH’s online competition for the
same category.
Furthremore, Timola, Tolon, Farma, and Villareal paid a
courtesy call with VMHS’ principal, Mr. Robert P. Velasquez in
2022 after the school was permitted to implement partial inperson classes with selected sections in order to calculate the
safety measures they will have to take once the new normal
fully kicks in. Although the mentioned students have
graduated from Mapa, their victory inspired the current
batches to pursue Journalism under Mrs. Mina-Sarsagat and
Mrs. Alpay.

During high school, Mr. Lucas was a
campus journalist and writer for Ang Gabay.
He experienced different things and enjoyed
being a journalist. According to him, the
moments that they had to compete during
the press conference are his best memories
in journalism.
Another memorable thing about their
journalism class is when they burned the
midnight oil for them to finish their Ang
Gabay layout. Those moments, for him, not
only built their character but also enhanced
their relationship with their classmates,
teachers, and other academic community
members.
“I also would not forget how my Journalism
classes had fortified my creative and
analytical skills. Those sessions with Ma’am
Alicia Almendarez and Ma’am Teresita
Aviles helped me become the person I
wanted to be – full of creativity, analytical,
independent, accountable, and fair,” Mr.
Lucas added.
To honor her mentors Jerome has this to
say : He also gave a tribute message to his
former journalism adviser, Ma’am
Almendarez. “To Ma’am Almendarez, I
thank you for all the learnings and
experiences.
Tunay at maimpluwensiyang guro lamang
ang maniniwala sa kanyang mga
estudyante kahit matagal na silang
nagtapos. Muli, maraming salamat po at
hangad po namin ang ligtas at masayang
mga paglalakbay pa sa buhay,” he said.

Quo Vadis Journalism
Journalism is a field built to
deliver truthful and helpful
news to the masses. It is there
and has always been there to
inform the people, to serve the
people, and to reveal to the
people those who dare defy
justice and the truth. But now
in the 21st Century, what is
Journalism? Now that
misinformation is rampant in
social media platforms, will it
continue to be relevant?
As VMHS alumni, Mrs. Ofelia
Santos once said, “We
journalists exist to be the
tagapagmasid, tapagsalita, at
tagapagtanggol
Translation: From Latin, hodie – today, cras – tomorrow
By: Aianna Ellaijha S. Timola
It has been harder for
journalists to subdue
malicious and fake news
because of how accessible the
internet is to people. Yet it
does not mean that the
fighters of truth will back
down. Generation Z has
proven themselves to be avid
voices.
For if not for us then who else?
Subtle Yet Impactful Headwin

“Dinggin n’yo kami! ”
This outcry resonated in the four
corners of the San Diego church,
a fictional place mentioned by the
Philippine National Hero, Jose
Rizal in Noli Me Tangere.
Since its exposition, the show
has already drastically altered
Rizal’s masterpiece. Millenial
character Maria Clara Infantez or
Klay was transported into the
novel, inspired by Rizal's vision of
the nation's future.
Because justice will only
prevail if people are not afraid
to speak up and it is our duties
as journalists and truth
seekers to ensure that the
masses will get what they
rightfully deserve and any
animosity among those in
power will be put to a stop.
Klay traversed the narrative and
became aware of the problems
plaguing the country from then
to the present. Klay’s influence
brought about significant
changes in San Diego’s society,
particularly with her namesake.
Klay’s role has a real-life
counterpart, in journalists of today,
with integral role in modern society.
Known inside the school as \"campus
journalists\" who are the modern true
to life Maria Clara Klay and media
practitioners in a struggle for press
freedom from power structures.
Journalism practitioners have
actively been serving the masses to
access information for greater
awareness for active participation as
citizens abreast with the progressive
sense of their world.
The age of technology is
something that everyone
anticipated, but with
convenience comes backlash.
Therefore, once the current
time have passed, the next
generation will use social
media as their weapon to
remain prominent in
proclaiming nothing but facts.
The original Maria Clara was
depicted as a conservative and
passive woman had a change of
perspective due to Klay's modern
and progressive ideals.
