Limp Bizkit- The band that DOESN’T want you to listen.

While the 90s were iconic for rap music, it was also a big decade for rock music. With bands such as Nirvana, Green Day, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers climbing the charts many turned their attention to rock.

The band Limp Bizkit, from Jacksonville, Florida formed in 1994 and was popular in the underground music scene in the mid 90s. Lead singer, Fred Durst, named the band with the intention of repelling listeners. According to Durst, “people pick up the disc and go, ‘Limp Bizkit. Oh, they must suck.’ Those are the people that we don’t even want listening to our music.”

With musical styles similar to Rage Against the Machine, Korn and Black Flag, the band tried to incorporate as many genres as possible that interested the group itself. Their music is more rap-rock, but is often considered nu metal.

Their song “Counterfeit” off of their first album, Three Dollar Bill, Yall$, faced a lot of controversy but, the album itself went on to sell over a million copies.

Limp Bizkit to this day is well known for their “kinetic and frenzied energy” during live performances. Their most popular performance being at the Woodstock ’99 festival, or as it is often referred to, the day music died.limp bizkit3

Fans were violently moshing along to the shattering screams of Durst as he is videotaped shouting, “I don’t think you should mellow out, this is 1999!”

Durst took it even further when performing the song “Break Stuff”. He taunted the crowd and not too long afterwards, the crowd began destroying a tower and tearing up the stage. Many criticized the band for inciting the riots. “Break Stuff” went on to become one of their most popular songs in the 2000s.

On October 17th, 2000, the band released their third studio album, Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water. The title was seen as a joke by the media but the phrase “Chocolate Starfish” refers to the human anus and Durst himself as he was often criticized for not being so pleasant.limp bizkit4

The album set a record for highest first-week sales for a rock album and even went on to be six times multi-platinum. The band later went on to release two more albums with the last being Gold Cobra in 2011.

Limp Bizkits success did not go unrecognized. They began as an underground band and eventually became a three time grammy nominated band for the categories Best Hard Rock Performance (“Nookie”), Best Rock Album (Significant Other), and Best Hard Rock Performance (“Take A Look Around”).

Almost 6 years since the last album was released by Limp Bizkit, they are set to release a new record, Stampede of the Disco Elephants, in the near future. It is rumored that Durst is currently unhappy with the material for the album which has caused delays.

With such great influence in today’s modern rock and alternative music, many impatiently await the arrival of Limp Bizkit’s new music.
