Braga and Guimarães, two gateways to northern Portugal

Spanning the mediaeval to the Baroque, the ancient to the modern, these two cities hold an important place in the history of Portugal. A whistle-stop cultural tour of the country’s north.

A northwestern Portuguese capital, less than an hour from Porto, the district of Braga also encompasses the city of Guimarães. The region lies in the historic province of Minho, named for its river. Here, porto vines give way to those producing vinho verde, a chance to find out for yourself that, when done well, this subtly sparkling white wine with a long heritage can more than compete with other great European white wines.

First stop Braga, Portugal’s capital of Baroque.  Landmarks include Braga Cathedral, a riot of gold and sculpted details, as well as the famed Bom Jesus staircase, a richly ornate and dramatic monument inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List that you really should see at least once in your lifetime. After visiting Braga, the oldest archdiocese in the country and the seat of the Primacy of the Spains, make Guimarães your next stop. The city centre of this northern city, nicknamed “the cradle of Portugal”, was classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

It was here that the first king of Portugal, Afonso I, known as “The Founder”, was born, in a castle that is worth a visit during your trip. Guimarães is also where the Dukes of Braganza, whose powerful house produced so many of the country’s rulers, chose to build their palace. Two cities with rich and fascinating histories to explore in a region that treats its guests like royalty. A great opportunity to relax and unwind at these wonderful city break destinations with Porto at your doorstep.
