ABOUT VENGURLA NIVATI LIGHTHOUSE

The Vengurla Nivati lighthouse stands on an archipelago, the Vengurla rocks, consisting of twenty rocks. Vengurla Rocks have two lighthouses. One is on Burnt island, and the other one is on a neighbouring island and is new.

The British built a lighthouse in the 1800s to prevent ships from crashing into the archipelago. Later the arrival of the materials for signalling ships was delayed. So the workers lit a fire to caution the boats. Since then, the island’s been called, Burnt island.

During monsoons, waves rose to 70 feet, submerging the lighthouse on Burnt island. Therefore, on the archipelago’s giant rock, another lighthouse was built. In 1931, John Oswald, the chief inspector of lighthouses, ordered the construction of the Vengurla Nivati lighthouse. The new lighthouse is almost 90 years old and still operational.

Earlier, a large crew and their families resided on the island. But due to a tragedy, only two workers live here.

Unfortunately, tourists cannot dock at the Vengurla Nivati lighthouse without permission. But, if the tide is low and the sea is calm, you can hop onto Burnt island. The structure of the old lighthouse is not firmly intact. So watch your step when exploring Burnt island.

HOW TO GET THERE?

Vengurla Nivati lighthouse is 8 km from the Konkan shore. The only way to reach the lighthouse is a long boat ride.

To get to the lighthouse, you can hire boats from Malvan, Tarkali, Bhogave beach or Vengurla. The prices for a boat might vary depending on your starting point.

I travelled to Vengurla Nivati lighthouse from Bhogave beach. A single boat costs Rs. 5,000. The price included a stop at the Golden Rocks, Nivati beach and the Vengurla Nivati lighthouse. The round trip lasted more than two hours.

The distance between the lighthouse and Bhogave beach is shorter compared to Malvan or Tarkarli. It means lower chances of seasickness.

The Vengurla Nivati lighthouse is beautiful and worth the long boat ride.

SIGHTS AND ACTIVITIES NEAR THE LIGHTHOUSE

There are beautiful sights near the Vengurla Nivati lighthouse. One such site is the Old Man’s Gargle. There are caves on two sides of the island. Next to one of the caves is a split in the rocks. When the tide is high, the water rushes into the gap and sprays out the other end. It is a beautiful scene.

Aside from Old Man’s Gargle, deep sea diving and scuba diving are popular activities. The Vengurla Rocks have diverse marine life and are one of the best spots for diving. You can arrange this activity with one of the diving schools in Malvan, Tarkarli and Bhogave.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t go diving because the sea was rough. The coast guard ordered all boats to return ashore. The weather improved for a while, and I was able to visit the Vengurla Nivati lighthouse.

However, I highly recommend undertaking this activity. It is a memorable experience.

TRAVEL TIPS

  • The early bird gets the worm. This saying is true because early risers might see dolphins.
  • Leave early. It ensures you have ample time to explore the lighthouse on Burnt island.
  • Eat light before the boat ride. Boating on a full stomach will guarantee seasickness.
  • Carry plenty of water.
  • Travel light. Carry as few things as possible. Water often splashes into the boat, and your bags get wet.

CONCLUSION

When travelling to Bhogave, Malvan or Tarkarli, visiting the Vengurla Nivati lighthouse is a must. It is a beautiful sight and worth the long boat ride. The round trip lasts four hours. It includes visits to Burnt island, Vengurla Nivati lighthouse, golden rocks and Nivati beach. The lucky ones can see dolphins swimming around.

    1. Hi. I’m glad my blog post was helpful.
The best way to contact a ferry boat is through your hotel. Lots of hotels are in regular contact with the boatsmen.
