Former colliery housing, Croxdale, Durham

These two terraces of colliery housing were built around 1875 for the Wearside Iron and Coal Company in Front Street. Although built in the late 19th century they were designed in an early C19 style. It was common in this area for mining companies to provide housing for their workers. This was generally a good thing but did mean that when a miner lost his job he also lost his home.
