Tamil Nadu’s Vandalur zoo gets Hanuman Langurs, endangered bird species from Kanpur zoo

The Vandalur zoo also known as Arignar Anna Zoological Park located on the outskirts of Chennai city is one of the largest and oldest zoos in the country.

The Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP), popularly referred to as Vandalur zoo, in Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpet district, has got Hanuman Langurs, and endangered bird species from the Kanpur Zoological Park in Uttar Pradesh as part of an animal exchange programme.

Four species comprising 10 Hanuman Langurs, five Mottled Wood Owls, a pair of Himalayan Griffon Vulture and a pair of Egyptian Vultures were transported from Kanpur Zoological Park on January 28.

In exchange, the AAZP has provided the Kanpur zoo a pair of reticulated pythons, two pairs of mouse deers, three ostriches, a pair of green iguanas and a male grey wolf on Monday.

During Pongal, the harvest festival in the state, over 69,000 visitors had visited the zoological park including 10,000 children under the age of five.

The animals were exchanged in compliance with the regulations of the Central Zoo Authority of India and as per the animal exchange programme proposed in August last year, officials said.

“It (AAZP) has a successful captive breeding programme for wild animals and has been especially successful in breeding reticulated python, mouse deer and ostriches. Therefore, the above animals are often exchanged for other wild animals with other Indian zoos through the animal exchange programme,” a statement from the zoological park read.

Kanpur zoo officials, including forest range officers and a veterinary assistant and veterinary assistant surgeon, accompanied the animals’ journey to Chennai.

The animals, on arrival, were medically examined at AAZP and were shifted to the temporary cells to keep them in quarantine for a prescribed period. Later, the animals will be shifted to the display area in the zoo, the authorities added.
