While touring her Baramati Lok Sabha constituency ahead of the elections, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule alleged on Wednesday that the Maharashtra government and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who is her cousin, had failed to address the water scarcity in the region.

Sule, working president of the party led by Sharad Pawar, appealed to local leaders to hold a one-day token hunger strike in protest over the severe water scarcity in the constituency.

“There is only one concern raised by people wherever I am visiting and that is about drinking water. There is a severe water scarcity and the state government, despite being frequently informed about it, has not taken any steps and is making the people suffer,” Sule said in Purandar, one of the six Assembly segments in the Lok Sabha constituency that she has represented for the past 15 years.

The other segments are Baramati, Indapur, Daund, Bhor and Khadakwasla. During her constituency tour, Sule is visiting one segment each day.

“Those in power can spend money for everything else, but not for providing water tankers to meet the drinking water needs of people in villages facing severe water scarcity,” she said.

Festive offer

Recalling Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s recent statement that water was stolen from neighbouring Phaltan, Sule demanded that the BJP leader reveal how it happened.

Incidentally, the guardian minister for Pune is Ajit Pawar, who parted ways with Sharad Pawar to join the BJP-led alliance. He has been maintaining that the water situation is under control and that any decision on it will be taken after a review in the next few weeks.

In a communication to the state government a few days ago, Sule stated that the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency had received very less rain than usual this year.

“There is a severe shortage of fodder and water. Farmers are worried about how to raise livestock. There is also a severe shortage of drinking water. Time has come for citizens to wander in all directions for water. This summer is about to start and it may get worse in the next few days. The government sees all this but still does not seem to be taking proper measures. This is very sad. One wonders how the government can keep calm after seeing the suffering of the citizens,” she wrote.
