You will find Bungay at the heart of the Waveney Valley, sitting on the bank of the river. A pretty market town with a rich history that can be tracked back to Roman times.

This is a town that has something for everyone, great food and drink offerings, independent shops with superb choice and value, a round of golf, time at the gym or a leisurely riverside walk.

At the centre of the town is the Market Place and the 17th century Butter Crossone of the most recognisable landmarks in Bungay. The first official market was held in the 13th century and there is still a weekly market every Thursday which is an integral part of the community.

One of the town’s great attractions is the location, it is perfect for both tourists and those looking for a slice of Suffolk’s good life on a more permanent basis. With historic city of Norwich around 15 miles to the north and the popular market towns of Beccles and Halesworth even

closer, you have easy access to lots of other facilities and attractions. Top that off with a trip to the beach at Kessingland or Southwold (both around 15 miles) and you have all you could need. The ideal mix of quiet countryside, the bright lights of Norwich city and the beauty of the Suffolk Heritage Coast.

A word of caution though: Bungay is famous for being a favourite haunt of Black Shuck, the large dog-like creature with flaming eyes the size of saucers! Black Shuck famously terrorised the congregation at St. Mary’s Church on 4th August 1577, that same night the beast visited Blythburgh Church, leaving scorch marks on the door as it fled. This local legend is where the many references to ‘Black Dog’ originate in the names of clubs, groups and local businesses.

Bungay Castle...

Nestled within central Bungay, stands the majestic Bungay Castle, a silent witness to centuries of history, turmoil, and transformation. This medieval fortress, though weathered by time, continues to command attention with its imposing presence and rich heritage.

History:

The tale of Bungay Castle begins in the 12th century, when it was erected by Roger Bigod, a powerful Norman baron. Strategically positioned overlooking the River Waveney, the castle served as a key defensive stronghold during the tumultuous medieval period, guarding the approaches to East Anglia. Its sturdy walls and formidable towers bore witness to conflicts and sieges, including the Barons' War in the 13th century.

Throughout its history, Bungay Castle changed hands multiple times, witnessing the rise and fall of noble families and enduring various renovations and expansions. However, its significance as a symbol of power and authority remained unwavering.

Restoration & Preservation:

The enduring remnants of the castle include its curtain walls, twin gatehouse towers, and a portion of the keep. Restoration efforts (spearheaded by Hugh Braun, starting in 1934) were prompted by excavations conducted by the amateur archaeologist Leonard Cane. In 1987, the 17th Duke of Norfolk gifted the castle to the town of Bungay, which is now under the ownership of the Bungay Castle Trust. Recognised as one of the earliest protected sites under the ‘Ancient Monuments Consolidation & Amendment Act’ of 1913, Bungay Castle was designated as a Grade I monument in 1949.

Modern-Day Use:

Today, Bungay Castle is a beloved heritage site and hub for cultural and educational pursuits. Visitors flock to admire its medieval architecture, explore the gardens, and delve into its history through guided tours. Nestled in Suffolk’s picturesque countryside, it’s a magnet for history, architecture, and nature enthusiasts alike. From its medieval origins to its current role as a symbol of preservation, Bungay Castle invites all to journey through time, connecting with the spirit of its past inhabitants.

Bungay Museum...

The Museum was established in 1963 and occupies two rooms in the council office in Broad Street.

The collections represent Bungay history through the centuries, commencing with a fine display of archaeology specimens, including Stone Age, Roman, and Saxon artefacts found locally. There is also a small section of geology, which features items found in local gravel-pits and on Outney Common.

From the medieval period are objects found on the Castle site, including clay sherds, keys, and buckles. The coin collection covers the Roman to Victorian periods with good examples of 17th and 18th.c. Bungay trade tokens.

A display case features books printed in the town by John Childs in the early

19th.c, and describes the development of the printing industry before and after it was taken over by Clays, of London, in 1877.

Local authors, Sir Henry Rider Haggard, and his daughter Lilias, are represented, and the manuscripts of the books by Frederick Rolfe and George Baldry which Lilias edited for publication. Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum...

Officially opened in May 1976 by Wing Commander Ken Wallis, the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum (N&SAM) has been a popular day out and tourist attraction for many years. Just a couple of miles west of Bungay, you'll find the village of Flixton. But, there are not many villages where you will be greeted by a fleet of aircraft!

It's not hard to find N&SAM as there is a Gloster Javelin and De Havilland Sea Vixen in the front meadow! Of course, these are just two of the hundreds of exhibits, including over 60 aircraft and cockpits and a whole host of related artefacts and memorabilia - over 30,000 items! This really is a fascinating place to visit, and best of all, currently, it is completely free to enter and park, though donations are very welcome.

Of course, here in East Anglia we have a great history when it comes to World War Two airfields. Norfolk and Suffolk were peppered with airbases and here at N&SAM you will find themed buildings displaying artefacts from the period. There is special attention paid to the 446th Bomber Group who were based at Flixton during WWII. In fact, the 446 BG were the longest-term resident at Flixton airfield during the war. Naturally, there are plenty of RAF related items here too as well as the Royal Observer Corps, Air Sea Rescue and Bomber Command.

The museum is run largely by volunteers and the bulk of the maintenance and restoration work on the aircraft and

exhibits is carried out by this team of dedicated and passionate volunteers. Over the course of the year, N&SAM can expect to see around 22,000 visitors, many of which will be families and school groups.

The volunteer team here prepare exciting and fascinating talks taking the children into a replica Anderson Shelter, flight simulators and even using an aircraft as a classroom! Hardly a surprise to learn that schools travel from across the region to make the most of what this fantastic place has to offer.

People are regularly donating items to the museum and are delighted when the volunteers here can bring it to life and explain what it is and how it would have been part of that person's life. In a nutshell, that is what happens here. This is about human stories - bringing to life something from yesteryear and putting it into context. This is a fantastic place that has been running for over 50 years, thanks to the hard work and dedication of a small team of volunteers. With the themed NAAFI café on-site, plenty of picnic benches outside and lots of easy parking, you really must come and discover N&SAM for yourself.

Waveney Valley Leisure Centre has an activity for everyone!

Waveney Valley Leisure Centre is Bungay’s premier exercise venue and offers a wide range of activities for people who want to work up a sweat. The site is run by leading leisure operator Everyone Active, who took over the management of the facility in March 2021 and work in partnership with East Suffolk Council.

A £3.4million refurbishment, completed just two years ago, has breathed new life into the centre. The state-of-the-art, 50-station fitness suite was included in the refurbishment, while a new group cycling studio was added. The group fitness studio features a range of classes, including bodybalance, bodypump and sh’bam. In addition, the 25m pool regularly hosts swimming lessons for all ages and the flume can be used during family swim sessions.

It isn’t all about working out until you drop, of course. The sauna offers a great opportunity to relax after a workout and a well-earned drink and snacks can be enjoyed in the café.

Everyone Active is on a mission to get everyone doing at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, five times a week - or 150 minutes.

The Black Shuck Festival celebrates Bungay’s heritage, mythical, historical and natural, with music, theatre, art, film performance and more. From the Black Dog Disco to the Black Dog Opera, from medieval reenactments to coracle racing, from puppet theatre to spooky films, there’s something for everyone.

The story of Black Shuck can be heard throughout the Festival, as a story for children, as a figure of fun and, most terrifyingly as the demon hound that wreaked havoc on the town in 1577. He will lead the Parade before being banished, with everyone’s personal demons, for another year as part of the Carnival on the Castle Bailey on August 3rd. BACT Community Transport...

BACT Community Transport has been based in Bungay for over 27 years. It covers not just Bungay, but the whole of the Waveney area, plus some of South Norfolk. The group offers accessible and affordable transport for people who cannot easily use public transport due to a physical/mental need or because there are no public transport options open to them.

Most of the transport that BACT provides is by volunteers or a handful of paid drivers who drive their own cars, as well as our accessible minibuses and vans.
