Our client’s reflections . . . . . Set in the heart of the stunning Eden Valley, The Manor House is an intriguing and beautiful 18th century Georgian building. It has a façade that dates back to 1726. It was originally built around an old peel tower and so dates back even further than its 1726 façade suggests. Constructed with attractive sandstone, the house boasts a beautiful symmetry typical of what we have come to expect from our Georgian houses. The Manor House has had an interesting and varied history and was once run as a “Gentleman’s Son’s School”, known at the time as Winton Academy. The owner and headmaster was The Reverend Dr Adamthwaite, who was apparently a foreboding character. He placed an advertisement in The Waterloo issue of The Times newspaper for parents to place their sons in his care; a copy is on display in our local village pub, The Bay Horse. In more recent years the house, as well as being run as a successful Holiday Home, has also been a charming and comfortable family home, which our family has had the immense pleasure of enjoying for the last 22 years. With a very warm and welcoming atmosphere we know that whoever buys this house will be very happy here and will soon love this beautiful house as much as we do.

Charles Dickens is reputed to have visited Winton Academy whilst conducting his research into the various schools and academies in England when writing Nicholas Nickelby. When standing in the drawing room at the front of the house it is easy to imagine him standing there, observing as the lessons took place and taking copious pages of notes.
