MYCHELES MEAD This utterly charming thatched cottage enjoys a very picturesque, semi-rural location on the edge of the delightful Cambridgeshire village of Glatton. The property was originally built in the 17th century and began life as three rather modest workers cottages, however the dwellings were later combined and in more recent times the property has been both extended and renovated and is now a large and beautifully presented family home.

Mycheles Mead is a delightful 17th Century thatched cottage in the picturesque village of Glatton. This charming cottage is located on an enviable plot, with ample off-street parking and a double garage with store, which has lapsed planning to convert into a self-contained annexe. The ground floor offers a kitchen breakfast room with AGA, utility room, shower room, dining room, conservatory, family room, and sitting room with inglenook fireplace. Upstairs are four bedrooms, two with built-in storage, a cloakroom and an en suite family bathroom. Alternatively, the layout would lend to 3 bedrooms, the master with a dressing room, en suite and own staircase. The beautiful rear garden offers an extensive patio and terrace with BBQ area, perfect for outdoor entertaining.

My favourite room would have to be the main living room,” says Jill. “It has a huge inglenook fireplace and when it’s cold and miserable outside we can light the fire and create such a cosy atmosphere.”

Seller Insight We bought the house eleven years ago, and I’d say that it was its sheer character and charm that drew me to it,” says Jill. “It’s the archetypal thatched country cottage from the outside, and inside it retains a wealth of really beautiful period features, however it also has a tremendous amount of space and a layout that makes it really comfortable for modern living, so for us it’s been absolutely ideal.” “The house had been enlarged and beautifully refurbished by previous owners, so when we came here it offered all the space we had been looking for and it was in superb condition, so we were able to simply move in and enjoy it. And I have to say it’s been a fantastic family home. We have a lovely big dine-in kitchen as well as a formal dining room, there’s also a sitting room, a family room and a big conservatory that opens straight out onto the garden, so it’s incredibly spacious and we’ve never felt as if we’re living on top of one another. It’s also very conducive to entertaining because the rooms are all really nicely proportioned and they flow into one another forming a loop. In my mind it’s perfect in every way and we’ve certainly been extremely happy here.” “The conservatory, which was added when the house was extended, is a lovely bright room that creates a really nice connection with the garden, which is another feature that initially attracted us to the house,” continues Jill. “It’s a vast space that’s mainly laid to lawn and edged with a very mature border of beautiful shrubs and trees, so we’re afforded a superb degree of privacy. It was a great garden when the children were young because they had so much room to run around and play, and as they’ve got older it’s become a space that’s provided us all with the perfect backdrop to some really memorable parties and celebrations.” “Glatton is an active village with a really good sense of community, and although we don’t have a shop here, we do have a fantastic real ale pub that serves lovely food,” says Jill. “The neighbouring village of Sawtry has a good selection of shops and amenities, and for everything else we tend to head into Peterborough, which is only a twenty-minute drive from here.”*

The house has been a fantastic home but I think it will be the setting that I’ll miss most when we leave,” says Jill. “We have nothing but open fields to the front of the house, and to be able to just step out of the front door and walk for miles through some of the most beautiful countryside has been a real privilege.”

Adjacent to the house we have a large, detached double garage and we actually have planning permission in place to convert it into a one-bed dwelling,” says Jill. “We never got round to having the work done, but it could be an exciting project for the new owners.”
