Responding faithfully to the Coronavirus As I write this, we are in the forty days of Lent and looking forward expectantly to Easter. The nights are cold, but we are looking forward to the arrival of the spring sunshine. The world is gripped with more and more news about the spread of Coronavirus, and all the ways in which people and countries are responding. So, how should we respond? As all the advice is for those who develop cold or flu symptoms to “self-isolate”, it is important that we keep in touch by phone with family, friends and neighbours. Perhaps a friend or neighbour might need some shopping done, … or they might simply appreciate a friendly voice on the other end of the phone. Wash your hands, and recite the Lord’s Prayer as you do so. That is much more faithful than singing “Happy birthday” twice. Trust in the love and mercy of God, care for the sick and vulnerable, … and share your hope of life beyond death. Our church buildings will remain open for Sunday worship and, when possible, at other times too. If you are unable to come to church, for whatever reason, you are encouraged to keep up a pattern of Bible reading and prayer. The Church of England provides online resources for Daily Prayer. Remember Psalm 91: Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. They say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. If you say, “The LORD is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. Easter follows Lent. In the season of Easter, we celebrate Jesus’ glorious resurrection and his victory over sin and death. Spring sunshine will come. And one day, the world will no longer be gripped by fears about Coronavirus. Revd Stephen Robertson Mission Community Leader Hello Everybody If you know anybody who would like an e-edition of the Parish News. Could you let me know who they are and their e-mail address, at parishnewseditor@gmail.com. A hard copy will be delivered as soon as possible. Please keep safe David Elsender 5

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE I expect most are aware that as of now (15th March 2020) all public worship in our parish churches is suspended until further notice because of the coronavirus situation. Weddings and funerals can still take place, but only with a limit on numbers in the congregation to ensure social distancing rules are not breached. Weddings can be held with as few as five present – the couple, the witnesses and the priest. Advice on christenings and the reading of banns is yet to be given. For funerals I will quote the instructions we have been given: Although this will be very difficult for everyone, numbers of those attending the funeral will have to be kept to a minimum – we advise immediate family only. Sadly, those over the age of 70 and those with an underlying health condition are strongly discouraged from attending in the present circumstances. Any changes to the normal service will be explained by the officiant to the family. Where family relatives or friends are unable to attend a funeral service, clergy can still take a funeral at the graveside or crematorium, even if those present are limited to clergy and funeral directors. Consider whether a memorial service could be held at some point in the future, which is an opportunity for more people to come together once Government guidance permits. No additional people should be expected to attend the service, such as an organist, verger, sound system operator etc. Everyone attending the service must adhere to Government guidance on social distancing. Please follow the directions of the officiant and funeral director if you are attending a service. While naturally those present may wish to shake hands or hug, all present should refrain from doing so in light of guidance on physical distancing. As for our buildings, those churches such as Hayton which are open daily we would like to keep open if at all possible, so they can be used as places for private

There are various options for getting worship and prayer resources out to people by the internet. Good place to look for links to live-streamed services and other devotional resources are the Church of England website and the Carlisle Diocese website. I and my colleagues will be considering what we might be able to offer locally via email, social media etc I would anticipate news bulletins, prayer needs and prayers, and spiritual food for thought will all be on the agenda. Please look after yourselves and each other, and hold this situation in your prayers. For our parishes and networks and families there may be hard times ahead. It is also an opportunity for the renewal of our faith and our service. 'Nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord'. Take care and God bless, Edward

Women’s Institute News IRTHINGTON WI MEETING FEBRUARY 2020 Jean Clark ran through items in the WI County News, including the Centenary Annual Council Meeting, to be held on Saturday 28 March 2020, 10:30am at Richard Rose Morton Academy. Jean Clark will be our delegate and Nesta Cowper will join her as a visitor. Visitors are welcome: cost £7.50. Irthington WI are hostesses for the Border Group Meeting on Wednesday 22 April 2020, 7:30pm at Newtown Village Hall. This will be a Musical Evening with ‘The Good Time Boys’. Thursby WI have invited us to their meeting on Monday 9 March 2020, names were taken. Liz Gaskarth took money for the trip to The Buccleugh Centre to see ‘Calamity Jane’. Next month, names will be taken for those interested in going on ‘The Trip’. The Border Group are organising a Centenary Dinner at Skitby on Wednesday 17 June 2020, 7 for 7:30pm, further details to follow. Irthington WI will hold a Coffee Morning in the Moot Hall, Brampton on Saturday 28 November 2020. Kitty Booth who works for Citizens Advice Carlisle & Eden, in the Carlisle office gave us a very interesting talk about what the Citizens Advice does. Citizens Advice is a registered charity, some staff are paid but most are volunteers. With over fifty volunteers, it’s the only way they can function as their service is free. The Department for Work and Pensions and the County and City Councils all give money to help with running costs, otherwise they rely on donations. Kitty began as a volunteer before becoming an employee five years ago and now trains others to help people. Citizens Advice, Carlisle, having recently passed their 80 th anniversary, opening in September 1939 and the Penrith office opened in 1960. Citizens Advice started by helping people to find family and help with housing and has grown in response to our ever-changing world to help with a wide variety of issues. In 2019 Citizens Advice Carlisle & Eden dealt with 4,122 people with 16,109 issues. There are a variety of ways to make contact with Citizens Advice which can be found on their website http://www.cace.org.uk/contact-us/ They also offer a ‘Drop In’ service three days per week at both offices. Carolyn Brough gave the vote of thanks, thanking Kitty for a very interesting and informative presentation. After supper, Liz Gaskarth gave everybody a ‘Links’ quiz. Flower of the Month 1. Smile-lines Palm waving It was Palm Sunday, but five-year-old Jamie stayed at home with mum because of a bad cold. When his father and sisters returned, they were carrying several palm fronds. His sister explained: “People held them over Jesus' head as He walked by.” “That’s not fair!” Jamie protested. “The one Sunday I don't go, and He shows up!” On the hop Q: What do you get when you cross the Easter Bunny with an over-stressed minister during Holy Week? A: An Easter Basket Case Hot What do you call a chocolate bunny that was out in the sun too long? A runny bunny. Higher power A Sunday school teacher said to her children, "We have been learning how powerful kings and queens were in Bible times. But there is a higher power. Can anybody tell me what it is?" One child blurted out, "Aces!" The Lord is my Shepherd A Sunday school teacher decided to have her young class memorise one of the most quoted passages in the Bible, Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the Psalm, but little Charles did not find it easy to memorise much of anything. On the day that the children were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Charles stepped up to the microphone and began proudly, "The Lord is my Shepherd….” He knew that much, but the rest of the Psalm suddenly deserted him. So he concluded bravely: “… and that's all I need to know."

Don’t break’em There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family Bible to her brother in another part of the country. "Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk. The lady paused for a moment. "Only the Ten Commandments," she said politely. Environmentally friendly transport While driving in the countryside, a family caught up to an old farmer and his horse-drawn cart. The farmer obviously had a sense of humour, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign: ‘Ecologically efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution: Do not step in exhaust.’ What God looks like An infants teacher was observing her classroom of children while they drew. One little girl was working away furiously, and so she asked her what the drawing was. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God." The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like." Without missing a beat, the little girl replied, "They will in a minute." Packet? A small boy was asking his mother where he came from and when he heard his mother’s explanation, he replied: ‘Mummy, when God planted the seed in your tummy, was there a photo of me on the packet?’ 10

Any opinions expressed in the Newsletter below are those of the author and are not necessarily shared by individual members of the Parish Council. Chairman’s Newsletter March 2020 Although it might not seem like it, Spring is finally on its way. After all the recent flooding and storms, let's hope we are going to have some dry and sunny weather!

Myself and a fellow councillor recently attended a “Health and Wellbeing” day at Wetheral Community Centre, where there were several organisations in attendance. One of them was The Rotary Club, whose mission is to involve local people and help give back to the community. The Brampton and Longtown Rotary Club provides the opportunity to help others, whilst also meeting new people and making friends. Just some of the recent projects they have worked on include organising a sponsored work, a murder mystery evening and a golf fundraiser. For more details, please contact Kevin Walsh on 01228 596090 or 07967 108803.

The recent bad weather hasn't helped the local roads, and I am increasingly being asked about the growing number of potholes throughout the parish. The most efficient way of reporting these is by using Cumbria County Council's website (www.cumbria.gov.uk) and navigating to the 'Roads, Travel and Parking' page. I am also happy to report that our defibrillator is up and running at Newtown Village Hall. Many thanks to Malcolm Dryden for installing it, and once again, thank you to The Brampton League of Friends for their funding. Lastly, due to the Covid-19 virus, the parish council has agreed a high infectious disease policy in order to remain an effective council. At the time of writing, all parish council meetings are suspended during the active period of this policy. Delegated powers have been introduced to allow the council to operate on a minimum requirement basis for planning applications and financial matters. It is uncertain when the Annual Parish Meeting will be held, but we will keep parishioners updated. A group has been established with the aim of working together to help those in isolation and need within the Brampton and surrounding area during the Covid-19 crisis. For those of you on Facebook, please check out the following page - B.A.T. Brampton Acting Together Group, for further information please call Carol Bell on 07841 824961 or Angie Find on 07788 735935. Please take care and a Happy Easter to everyone. Best wishes, Anne.
