CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Three people in Malaybalay City and another three in Kalilangan town in Bukidnon were riddled with bullets the other evening by two different groups of gunmen. Police in Malaybalay reported that in barangay San Jose eight gunmen armed with M-16 Armalite rifles and a shotgun shot and killed Robert Desalan, 24, Manny Mabala, and Gerry Mabala. Congressman Rufus Rodriguez of the 2nd district of Cagayan de Oro City said he will file a resolution in Congress this week calling for the Hong Kong government to withdraw its demand for Philippine government officials to get a visa first before entering the Chinese autonomous province. Rodriguez said he does not approve of Hong Kong’s insistence that the President of the Philippines ask for an apology for the 2010 hostage crisis in Manila in

Avail the city’s slaughter services, consumers told CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Local consumers here are encouraged to avail of the city’s slaughter services to ensure that the slaughtered animals were safe for public consumption, City Councilor Dante Pajo said on Monday., Pajo, who chairs the city council’s committee on health,said the consuming public should be wary of meat products sold in the local market since there were those that did not come from the slaughter house. Meat products that came from the city’s slaughter house were inspected by the city’s veterinarian to make sure that the meats were safe, Pajo added. He said that 99,746 animals were slaughtered in the city’s slaughter house from January to December 2013 that included 10,096 heads of cattle, 183 carabaos, 1,598 goats, 537 horses, 258 ostrich, and 87,074 hogs. Six-hour workday for public school teachers By ZENAIDA L. RANARIO Imbatug Baungon, Bukidnon

The proposed measure to reduce the working hours of teachers from the standard mandatory eight to six hours per day is a welcome development for us teachers, one it becomes a law. While teachers’ pay has been increased by recent enactments of law, they still desire higher pay and shorter working hours. Our present work schedule is stressing and exhausting and is detrimental to the desire for effective teaching. HB 2684 proposes a six-hour workday for public school teachers and exempts them from compliance with the Civil Service mandated eight-hour workday for government workers. One approved, this will be a great reprieve for us teachers given that any work performed in excess of six hours a day shall be considered as additional compensation of at least twenty-five percent of the regular pay. The bill, according to proponents, shall exempt teachers from Civil Service Rules which prescribed the generally established rule on an eight-hour workday. Section 3 of the bill states that “any teacher engaged in actual teaching may be required to render more than six hours of teaching upon payment of additional compensation at the same rate of his/her regular plus at least twenty-five percent of his/her basic pay.” Said section further states that “teachers who are not engaged in actual teaching but render more than six hours work shall likewise be entitled to the additional compensation provided in this Section.” The said exemption from CSC rules is also in observance of Book V of the Administrative Code of 1987 which also states that “Officers and employees of all departments and

agencies except those covered by special laws shall render not less than eight hours of work a day for five days a week or a total of fortyhours a week, exclusive of time for lunch.” Furthermore, Section 5 states that “notwithstanding provisions of existing law to the contrary, cocurricula, out-of-school activities and other activities of any teacher outside of their normal duties shall be paid an additional compensation of at least twenty-five percent of his/ her regular remuneration after the teacher has completed at least six hours of work.” “The role of teachers in moulding our youth and contributing to national development cannot be undermined,” the Bill says. The proposed comprehensive and unified student financial assistance system that will fund quality education to benefit more poor students is a humane measure since it will provide education to children from poor families who are deprived of a better future than those who can afford to pay for their studies. The measure will harmonize all government scholarship and grantsin-aid programs to promote greater efficiency, coherence, synchronization, rationalized access, effective funding and improved coordination among implementing entities, according to those proposing the law. The bill would address problems related to access, equity and distribution of student financial assistance slots, targeting of beneficiaries, allocation and utilization of government resources, tracking of the whereabouts of beneficiaries, the payment recovery rate on student loans and compliance system on scholarships and management. The measure provides for the implementation of the unified student financial assistance system to be known as the Unified Financial

Assistance System for Higher and Technical Education (UniFAST). We have existing financial assistance programs for higher and technical education students in both public and private institutions, including national scholarships, grants-in-aid, special purpose or sector educational assistance, student loans, and government programs in partnership with other stakeholders, among others, and which are nationally funded and/ or implemented by national government agencies, branches and instrumentalities, but UniFAST will integrate all of these. A national body would also be created to formulate and approve the national government student financial assistance policies and strategies for tertiary education, and review existing policies to ensure consistency with its policy framework under the Act. However, it would be more effective if a Stakeholders Accountability Committee (SAC) composed of representatives from parents, organizations and students’ groups, the youth sector, teachers and edu-

cators’ groups, HEIs and TVIs, and the industry shall be created, lawmakers said. “The SAC shall ensure transparency and accountability and institutionalize consultations with concerned sectors by allowing it to inquire into the books of accounts, policy statements, issuances and other documents and information of the Board,”they added. The proponents added that, to ensure the availability of appropriation and cash, a UniFAST Trust Fund for Student Loans and a UniFAST Trust Fund for Grants-in-Aid and Scholarships known as UniFAST GIAS Fund shall be created under the power and supervision of the Board. Student loan refers to a modality of student financial assistance, short term or long term loans provided to finance the tertiary education of students facing liquidity problems, regardless of economicstatus. Grant-in-Aid (GIA) refers to a modality of student non-repayable financial assistance to poor but eligible students; it generally requires a minimum level of competence but not excellence.

It could be School-Based, District, Provincial or Regional. Activities tackled by Boys and Girls are different but would develop them to become responsible citizen and to become good leaders in the future. The two-day school- based Campo-ral last December 13-14, 2013 was participated by 38 registered Boy Scouts and 12 scouters. While The Girl Scouts encampment was participated by 48 registered junior Girl Scouts and 11 adult leaders. The activity started with a short program held in the Barangay covered court since the school lack space to serve as an activity area. The program was attended by the Barangay

Section 12, Article ll of the Constitution on the Declaration of Principles and State Policies, explicitly provides “The State recognizes the sanctity of family life and shall protect and strengthen the family as a basic autonomous social institution. It shall equally protect the life of the mother and the life of the unborn from conception. The natural and primary right and duty of parents in the rearing of the youth for civic efficiency and the development of moral character shall receive the support of the government.” The common welfare of society and the good of the individual depend to a great extent upon the

proper education and training of children. The youth of today will be tomorrow’s citizens. These citizens will be as they have been prepared and guided in their youth. The government, therefore, should equally share in the inherent right and duty of parents in the training of their children to be good, useful and worthy citizens. In House Bill 3338 or the proposed “One College Scholar for Every Filipino Family Act of 2013,” Rep. Douglas Hagedorn (3rd District, Palawan), proposed the establishment of a system to ensure the production of one college graduate for every family with the subsidy and support from the government.

Every Filipino family shall be entitled to only one scholarship, which is non-transferable and nonextendible. The government shall shoulder the 100 percent tuition and miscellaneous expenses for every qualified beneficiary or scholar from every family for any four- or five-year bachelor degree course in any state- or local government-funded college or university. Thus, he said, it is the duty of the State to see that parents, through such means as compulsory education laws, fulfill these obligations and to supply the essential educational facilities which private initiative is unable to furnish.

School- based management (SBM) is the recent trend in education reform that stresses decision making on the school level. In the past, school policies were set by the state and the districts. Now the trend is for individual schools to make their own decisions and policies. It is the decentralization of decision-making authority from state and district (central, regional, division) levels down to the school level. Responsibility and school operations is transferred to principals, teachers, parents, sometimes students, and other school community members with the intent to unite. The school, however, have to conform to, or operate, within a set of centrally determined policies. School-based management in Kauswagan Central School is actively implemented and highly operational to achieve its main goal to improve school performance and students achievement. The empowered school head with the grade leaders and teachers’ club officers shared leadership and governance with implementing guidelines and reforms that lead to higher learning outcomes. Committed, dedicated, technologically-oriented and skillful teachers and cooperative, talented and productive pupils are united in conducting and performing curricular and extra-curricular activities in the school

and even outside the school community with competence and excellence. The school administration and the School Governing Council strengthens partnership with the parents, non-government organizations, other community stakeholders as well as local government units for them to invest time, money and effort in making the school a better place to learn. As the designated SBM school coordinator of Kauswagan Central School, I truly feel and still experiencing the pressure and expectations along with the heavy -weight responsibilities that has been handed in to me from the very start of the school year 2013-2014. Although taking in the challenge to successfully conduct the various tasks and roles is not an easy thing to do, still, I could say that SBM had mark a big difference and still taking the lead in KCS. Teachers and the school administrators are now more united and more attune to do and impart what are expected from them to keep on the right tract on the principles of SBM namely leadership and governance, curriculum and learning, resource management and accountability for higher learning outcome. For all of these guiding principles to be fully realized, maintaining its sustainability is needed. These can be achieved through strong and continuous commitment, coordination, cooperation, collaboration and communication from all concerns. Thus, achieving the main goal of improving school performance and students achievements is not that far…it is just within reach.

Bomb detonated inside bus in Surigao BUTUAN CITY -- An Explosive and Ordnance Device (EOD) Team on Monday safely detonated an improvised explosive device found inside a Luzon-bound passenger bus along the national highway in Barangay Lipata, Surigao City. Reports from Surigao del Norte Police Provincial Office reaching the regional police headquarters here said a cartoon box believed containing the improvised explosive was detonated after an hour of careful handling by bomb experts. A concerned citizen reported to Surigao City Police Station around 8:30 a.m. Monday that passengers noticed a suspicious box placed on the rear portion of a PP Bus Line which arrived from Davao City. The bus was bound for

Luzon with passengers who were to cross the sea waters from Lipata, Surigao City to Benet, San Ricardo, Leyte, via a ferry boat. Police investigation disclosed that the PP Bus (TOC-681) stopped over an eatery in the place for breakfast. A female passenger heading for Southern Samar, noticed a man carrying the box and placed it at the back portion of the bus and immediately disembarked. Another male passenger bound for Silago, Southern Leyte later noticed a smoke coming from the rear portion of the bus. He then called the attention of bus driver Ruel Orquesta Panuncio to check where the smoke was coming from. Panuncio ascertained that the smoke was coming from the cartoon box. Republic Act 8371 otherwise known as the Indigenous People’s Rights Act of 1997 or the IPRA LAW promulgated not only to PROTECT THE RIGHTS of the IP’s but also to PROVIDE EQUAL ACCESS to Government Programs and Basic Services. To materialize the mandate specified in the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the IPRA Law, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) issued a Memorandum paving the way of Mandatory Representatives to take seat in the Local Legislative Bodies may it be in the Barangay Council, the Sangguniang Bayan or the Sangguniang Panlalawigan. In the same way, the Secretary of the Department of Education (DEP-ED) issued a Directive dated October 20, 2010, commencing the IP-Ed Program and facilitating its integration to the Subjects included in the contemporary curriculum. Only two school met the criteria for PRIME school in Mindanao namely: Kitobo Elementary School of Kitaotao, Bukidnon and Laruk Elementary School of Kisolon, Sumilao, Bukidnon. A school is considered PRIME if 98% of its students belong to any Indigenous Cultural Community in the area.

DENR 10 conducts Critical Habitat Assessment The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region 10 (DENR 10) has concluded its field assessment for the proposed establishment of a critical habitat for Philippine sailfin lizard (Hydrosaurus pustulatus), locally known as “ibid” in barangay Solana, municipality of Jasaan, Misamis Oriental. The activity was conducted upon the request of Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Vincente “Bambi” Emano. It was gathered Governor Emano is keen on promoting the area as an ecotourism site. The considerably large population of sailfin lizard was reported to the DENR by a concerned resident of barangay Solana, Jasaan last year. The assessment, which was spearheaded by personnel from the DENR regional office’s Protected Areas and Wildlife Division with the Provincial/Community DENR offices and Misamis Oriental Provincial Government, was conducted on January 8 – 9 at the said area. In her report to DENR 10 Regional Executive Director Ruth M. Tawantawan, Forester Marilou Clarete, caretaker of the Protected Areas, Wildlife and Coastal Zone Management Services (PAWCZMS) said all the data collected from the assessment will be evaluated and used to come up with the final area coverage of the proposed critical habitat site. Forester Clarete further said that the initial findings will also be discussed with the stakeholders in the area since the proposed site falls under alienable and dispos-

able land. The assessment team is exploring the possibility of implementing legal easement on both sides of the river where the population of sailfin lizard is observed. This will facilitate the population to thrive and aide in the establishment of the critical habitat. Sailfin lizard (Hydrosaurus pustulatus) is endemic to the Philippines and is categorized under “other threatened species” based on Department Administrative Order No. 200415 of Republic Act 9147 (Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act). The sailfin lizard is vulnerable and under threat from adverse factors. The adverse factors may range from over collection/hunting for both the pet trade for local or international consumption, habitat loss, most often the conversion of wooded land to alternative uses (including agriculture), and through logging operations. In region 10, critical habitat was established for the Rafflesia schadenbergiana whose local name is “koron busaw” in sitio Kalanganan, barangay San Vicente, Baungon, Bukidnon. Aside from the Sailfin Lizard, the DENR 10 has earlier proposed to the DENR – Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) for the declaration of the hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) critical habitat in barangays San Isidro, Damayon, Sta. A lawmaker has congratulated Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Beltran Quevedo on his assumption as the First Cardinal of Mindanao. Rep. Juliette Uy (2nd District, Misamis Oriental) said Quevedo’s elevation to the College of Cardinals placed in the map the province of Mindanao, which has endured one of the world’s longest running Muslim insurgencies. “As Member of the College of Cardinals, he may be able to assist Pope Francis and the Catholic Church in reaching out to the marginalized people in Mindanao, and at the same time, may be a great

help and counsel to the Pope in understanding Islam on the ground and promote further inter-religious dialogue,” Uy said. Uy said Quevedo became the chair of the government panel in peace negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and a key figure in the understanding of the Bangsamoro issue. He can help strengthen the peace efforts between the government and the MILF, added Uy. Uy said Quevedo together with 18 men around the world will be inducted into the College of Cardinals in the Roman Catholic Church’s consistory on February 22, 2014. “Quevedo is an archbishop who is truly passionate for the formation of Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) or also called basic Christian communities or small Christian communi-

ties. As a Christian movement, many regard the emergence of the movement as part of the concrete realization of the communitarian model of the Church promoted by the Second Vatican council,” Uy said. Uy said the communities are considered as a new way of “being the Church” – the Church at the grassroots, in the neighborhood and villages. The lawmaker disclosed that Quevedo comes from a context of a boy who grew up in Marbel, Koronadal, Cotabato in the late 40’s and early 50’s whose parents migrated from crowded North to the vast and spacious South. Uy added that Quevedo’s record speaks for itself having worked as a priest-educator in Cotabato City for 12 years, as a parish priest in Jolo, Sulu for almost 2 years, as bishop of Kidapawan for 6 years, and as archbishop of Cotabato for the past 15 years. “He is an intellectual giant with a very simple lifestyle and very warm fraternal manners,” Uy stressed

No one can deny the safe atmosphere prevailing in Davao City that in large measure is attributable to that city’s mayor but no one in his right mind can ever endorse his open threat to shoot a suspected rice smuggler if he sets foot in his city. And I personally wonder why the Senate did not impose any sanction on Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for making such threat during a Senate investigation into rice smuggling in the halls of that august body no less. Duterte in his testimony before the Senators claimed that Davidson Bangayan and David Tan is one and the same person. He then went on to say that the guy was responsible in landing in his city tens of thousands of metric tons of smuggled rice. He then made known to everyone present that he did not like Bangayan/Tan’s smuggling activity and made the startling threat to shoot the guy once he makes the mistake of setting foot in Davao City. But wait, here’s a chance for PNoy and all the bright boys who came up with all that jazz about moving general aviation to Sangley Point to decongest NAIA (and not yet pushing through with it, after all). Seems the problem now with LA is the original schedule for the completion of the installation of its landing lights and navigational aids has to be put back five months because guess what? The premature opening cut off a full year or the equivalent of six working months off the contractor’s original time sked to finish the work by June, this year!

Man shot, loses bike to armed robbers in Zamboanga Sibugay ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY – Robbers shot a motorcycle owner before fleeing with his bike in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga Sibugay, police said. Dengue afflicts Zambo evacuees ZAMBOANGA CITY -- At least 23 cases of dengue have been recorded so far among evacuees at the Joaquin Enriquez Sports Complex, City Health Officer Dr. Rodelin Agbulos on Monday said. The report prompted Agbulos to advise the evacuees to observe cleanliness to contain the disease. The sports complex has served as the biggest evacuation center for families displaced in the September 2013 standoff between government forces and the Moro National Liberation Front Misuari faction. “We urge the IDPs to help keep the evacuation centers clean to prevent the spread of infections,” Agbulos said. ZAMBOANGA CITY – The United Nations Interfaith Harmony Partners-Zamboanga (UN IHP-Z) has spearheaded this year’s celebration of the World Interfaith Harmony Week from February 1 to 7 to once again emphasize the importance of unity and respect among all faiths to achieve peace. This time the celebration is not confined within the city, though. Republic Act 10525 which was signed by President Benigno Aquino III on April 23, 2013 mandates its observance by the different government agencies nationwide. Retired Public School Teacher and active member of the UN IHP-Z Remedios Marmoleño said the approval of RA 10525 has strengthened interfaith initiatives not just in Zamboanga and Mindanao, but in the whole country and world.

“ Two years ago, we launched this initiative here in Zamboanga, followed by other areas in Mindanao. Seeing the success of this initiative, the President approved RA 10525 which mandates government agencies nationwide to observe the World Interfaith Harmony Week. PAGADIAN CITY - Over P2-million worth of coffee seedlings will be given to seven municipalities in the province of Zamboanga del Sur which are recipients of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) and Nestle Philippines’ joint venture. Duran, provincial coconut development manager during an interview with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), saying that 50,000 coffee seedlings have been allocated for each town to be planted in 100 hectares. “The target date of delivery was in January, but because of the inclement weather, only the initial delivery of 30,000 seedlings has been made - 15,000 for Vincenzo Sagun, 5,000 for Dumalinao and 10,000 for Lakewood,” Duran said. However, arrangements have already been made to speed up the delivery, Sagun added. Duterte pins down Bangayan in Senate probe;

A V A O CITY– The awaited appearance of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on the Senate’s inquiry helped pinned Davidson Bangayan for his involvement in smuggling imported rice.

After the Senate hearing, authorities from the National Bureau of Investigation arrested Bangayan, also known as David Tan for violation of the AntiElectricity and Electric Transmission Lines or the Materials Pilferage Act of 1994. News reports quote NBI Director Virgilio Mendez saying that from the NBI Headquarters, Bangayan will be taken to the Caloocan court that issued the warrant for his arrest. Justice secretary Leila de Lima said they are still working on the rice smuggling case against the businessman. Mayor Duterte, who made earlier statements about Bangayan,presented to the Senate committee on agriculture a photograph from intelligence sources identifying Bangayan as David Tan. He said David Tan was frequently mentioned by rice traders and other agencies for involvement in shipping imported rice into the shipping port of Davao City. Duterte was asked by Senator Juan Ponce Enrile if Tan was the same with Bangayan, who was also present at the Senate inquiry, in which Duterte affirmed. “No doubt, the one in the room,” he told Enrile. The mayor said the city’s business bureau had no records of business permits involving Bangayan or Tan, but said that Bangayan “comes to Davao once a year, dealing with scrap metal and fertilizers.” Duterte scoffed: “The problem with us in govt is we talk too much, act too slow, do too little. What this country needs is not more laws, but more good men in public service, let me ask, do we subscribe to that?” The Senate hearing zeroed in on Bangayan, whom the mayor had identified as a smuggling operator in a press interview last January 10. The mayor answered queries from senators on the modus of smuggling

rice, saying that operators “come prepared with recycled permits” which they can produce when government agencies question their delivery. Duterte also added that the smuggling of imported rice could not be done without the involvement of personnel from the Bureau of Customs and National Food Authority. But he admitted his consultations and intelligence information did not produce any names of personnel from such agencies. He also said operators can also go through courts to issue injunctions to release imported rice, which the Customs personnel had no choice but to comply.

During the hearing, NFA Administrator Orlan Calayag said a check in their records nationwide showed there was no Davidson Bangayan registered as a rice trader or retailer. Bangayan on his part, defended his actions, saying it has been “common practice” to procure import permits for rice. He elaborated that there are some 200 participants in such schemes,and that his company is only a “fraction or 7%” of those involved in the scheme. DAVAO CITY - National Food Authority (NFA) Davao Field Office manager Felimon Cangrejo confirmed on Monday that some of the rice shipments arriving at the Davao Port have no import permits. He said NFA has information on the issue because of its close coordination with the Bureau of Customs (BOC). He, however, did not elaborate further as the issue is now being probe into at the Senate. “Maybe after the inquiry, we will know who speaks the truth,” he said. He clarified that NFA cannot issue a permit to import by itself, saying that such can be issued following an inter-agency evaluation. The permit can only be issued upon recommendation of the inter-agency committee. He said that in the permit to import, the volume of rice supply and the government would really know where it would go and when it will arrive. hen one is young, one’s outlook in life is so different and many times, askew. For example, new “things” are always more appealing than old ones. It is only when one grows older and wiser that the way you look at the world and the things in it somehow changes. For the better? In my opinion, yes. W hen I was i n g rade school, I saw among my mother’s things a polished dark coconut piggy ban k with a silver cover. It was very beautiful and unique. It had belonged to her grandmother and had the latter’s initials on it on the silver cover. My mother, generous soul that she was, gave it to me when I asked if I could have it. I did not take good care of it and now I don’t know what happened to it. Back then, I did not realize its true value. She also gave me some silver serving spoons, inscribed with her mother’s initials and I lost those too. Those were heirlooms that could have been handed down to my own daughters. Oh that I could get those priceless items back. Actually, priceless and valuable only to me because of their sentimental value. In this life, there are things that one regrets doing or not having done. One of my biggest regrets is trading in a stereo unit, the cabinet of which my father had designed & made in his furniture shop. The shop started out as a hobby but pretty soon people started ordering from him. It was just a small shop, with one very good furniture carpenter and a helper-weaver who could do “solihiya”. Anyway, as word of his furniture pieces, known for their good workmanship and fine designs grew, so did his clients which included the parents of Mindanao Current’s Ed Montalvan, Tito Titang Fortich, Tita Tellie & Tito Nene Eparwa, Chitong & Alice Lorenzo, Mrs. Vicki Hannah and other American staff of Del Monte up in Kawayanon. Going back to my original story - thinking that a new stereo set would be

nicer than the old one, I traded in our old one without even asking my father’s permission. He did not say anything but I am sure it must have hurt him. I very much regret it now and would gladly buy back that cabinet from whoever has it hidden in some corner of their house. Just as I would also want to buy back any furniture buffet, side tables, dining & living room sets and other pieces that came out from my father’s old shop, from anybody who has them – so that I can fill my future “retirement home” in this city with furniture made in

stories (by James Michener, Leon Uris, Edna Ferber, Guy de Maupassant, etc), and old friends from our childhood. I remember some aunts who had ternos or gowns made by Valera & other renowned old couturiers – those ternos could still be in bauls somewhere. I wonder if their daughters realize how beautiful those ternos could still be even now. I s t i l l h ave my ow n wedding gown (39 years old) which I’ve been keeping for future use. I didn’t try to suggest to my own daughters if they wanted to wear it at their own

Wo n d e r f u l old s t u f f that are precious and worth keeping – old pictures (I love those old sepia and black & white photos, especially of the old hometown and the people that lived in it a long time ago, the men looking so handsome and debonair in their “de hilo” suits and the ladies, in gossamer-like chiffon dresses & laced-up high heels); every time I go home, I bring over pictures from long ago, old songs (I still have old 33 RPM records and my daughter, Gretchen, has so many of those 45 RPM records; the lyrics and tunes of these old songs are so magical especially when sang by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Andy Williams, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby it makes one fall in love all over again), old prose & poetry (Shakespeare, the Brownings, Rober t Frost, Ten nyson, Shelley) old writings (the Bi bl e , t h e P s a l m s , t h e Get t ysbu rg Add ress, the classics) old movies (who can forget Gone with the Wind, An Affair to Remember, The Ten Commandments, Giant, etc.), old books/novels/short

weddings; but I know it will make a beautiful christening gown for my grandchildren! And what is it about an old house that is so appealing? Well, while new houses are ver y nice since they usually come with the latest appliances and gadgets, new houses somehow do not have the patina that comes from old wood like tugas (narra) & balayong found in old houses. T he re a re n’t a ny old houses in Cagayan de Oro, much less ancestral homes. The reason is this city was one of those that suffered heavy bombing during the Japanese Occupation. As ever ybody k nows, Vigan in La Union is a favorite tourist destination because of its many old houses with antique furniture in them and cobblestone streets. Other places like Negros and Pampanga also have these old, majestic, grand homes that evoke old world gracious living. Nowadays builders or i nter ior decorators even buy old or aged wood taken from old homes including old doors and windows from old churches.

A nd then there’s “old school” (remember U.S. Pres. Barack Obama’s remark at the Inaugural Ball for the young, that he was “old school”). Old school for me means the old ways, good manners, graciousness, and a way of life that bespoke gentility and courtesy. These are traits that never go out of style. And as for “old people”, meaning your own parents, grandparents or aunts and uncles - they are the best treasure of all. Who else can tell you about your background, your ancestors, or about life the way it was then during their time. You ca n not get these things from books. It is something very personal in your own family. I remember receiving some nice comments from friends after I had written “Memories of the Old Hometown”. Teresa Balaba Almonte of Salem, Virginia, wrote me to say that “You must have listened to your mother’s stories because you know so much about the old hometown”. She regretted not having done so with her own mother. So, it would be wise for children to listen to the stories narrated by their grandparents or parents even though they may seem repetitive at times. Remember that you will not find these nuggets of wisdom anywhere else. It comes from their own life experiences. Those are beyond measure and one cannot put a value on them. As for the “old hometown”, the mere mention of the word elicits warm, happy thoughts of carefree bygone days. Native Cagayanons bewail the fact that our city is not the way it was then. We pine for the good old days; days that will never come back again. Thinking about life in Cagayan de Oro in the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s always brings great pleasure that is why my cousins, old friends and all Cagayanons in my age group reminisce about the good old days and the old hometown all the time. We just never t i re of talking about what it was like then.
