Luxembourg City Underground: Bock Casemates The Bock Casemates, an underground defence system consisting of a network of miles-long corridors, are one of Luxembourg’s most important sights. These underground galleries were built in the 17th century when Luxembourg was under Spanish rule and were expanded twice afterwards. Visiting the archaeological crypt, an antechamber of the casemates, also makes for an exciting experience. In a nod to its impressive fortifications, Luxembourg was given the nickname “Gibraltar of the North”. Discover the fascinating history of the casemates and enjoy beautiful views over the Grund, Clausen, and Pfaffenthal.

Luxembourg City Underground: Pétrusse Casemates Underneath the city lies a secret: the “Luxembourg City Underground”, the world’s longest defence system consisting of a network of underground corridors that span several miles. Descend into the Pétrusse Casemates beneath the iconic statue of the "Gëlle Fra", a world which glows with a new-found splendour thanks to an innovative, audiovisual show. The Bockfiels: A castle for the city The Bock cliffs, which contain the casemates, are an impressive testimony to the city’s fortress history. Surrounded on three sides by the Alzette valley and only accessible from the west, the rock was easy to defend. It was here that Count Siegfried built "Lucilinburhuc" (little fortress), during the 10th century. Later it became the city and the country of Luxembourg. An unrivalled tunnel system was carved into the rock, housing a crypt. It’s a unique feature that towers above the old town offering fascinating views and perspectives. Gëlle Fra: Laurel wreath for freedom The "Gëlle Fra" (Golden Lady) memorial, situated on Place de la Constitution, was built in 1923 to remember the Luxembourgish soldiers who died in the First World War. It consists of a gilded female figure holding a laurel wreath on a slender stone obelisk. In 1940, the memorial was destroyed by the Nazis. It took until 1984 for the "Gëlle Fra" to undergo extensive restoration and regain its original appearance. Today, the statue symbolises the freedom and resistance of the Luxembourgish people and constitutes a military memorial for those who volunteered to join the Allied armies, sacrificing their lives in various wars and battles.

Chemin de la Corniche: Europe’s most beautiful balcony Don’t miss out on this hike along the city walls. It passes by a stunning viewing point, which Luxembourgish author Batty Weber referred to as “Europe’s most beautiful balcony”. The city stretches out over many different levels. The Corniche runs atop the ramparts that the Spanish and French built along the Alzette valley in the 17th century. The trail stretches from the Bock to the lower part of the Holy Ghost Citadel, the so-called "Rondellen".

Notre-Dame Cathedral: An interplay of architectural styles Are you looking to experience Luxembourg’s spiritual past? Pay a visit to a centrepiece of city history: the crypt of Notre-Dame Cathedral, containing the remains of King John the Blind. Luxembourg’s largest funfair – the Schueberfouer, which takes place every August – dates back to his times. The light-flooded cathedral is an ecclesiastical heritage, which combines architectural elements from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. During the Octave pilgrimage, the statue of the Virgin Mary in the chancel is clad in a different robe every couple of days. The statue is noteworthy figure that even has its own fans.

Lëtzebuerg City Museum: City history brought to life This museum brings the capital’s more than one thousand years of history to life: "The Luxembourg Story" is a permanent exhibition that shows the development of the city through original artefacts, models and multimedia installations. The new UNESCO Visitor Centre continues with the historic theme, while two last floors of the museum house temporary exhibitions. The "Lëtzebuerg City Museum" is housed in four historic buildings which were built between the 17th and 19th centuries, in some cases on medieval foundations. A special highlight is the glass elevator, which can carry up to 65 people at a time, through whose glass walls visitors can see how the ancient walls blend seamlessly with the museum.

RINDSCHLEIDEN GUTTLAND

Rindschleiden: Small place, big calm Luxembourg’s smallest village, Rindschleiden, is a place to rest the feet and soul. A church, a little forest, a museum, a bistro, a small park – it’s like walking through a picture book. From the centre, it’s a short walk to the Meditation Path. The trail leads towards a small forest, where walkers can sink into the cool darkness. Different prompts along the trail invite you to reflect such as this one: “Eternity too consists of moments”. Such a moment could be the second you leave the forest and reach a small pond behind which you can see the silhouette of this little village. A tiny place to feel peace on a large scale.

St. Willibrord Basilica: A former cultural hub In the Middle Ages, the monks at the Abbey of Echternach produced beautiful and elaborately designed manuscripts that were famous throughout Europe. The museum, which is housed in the vaulted cellars of the abbey palace dating from 1727, still bears witness to this. High-quality facsimiles of manuscripts such as the "Codex Aureus Epternacensis", which were produced in the Echternach scriptorium, are exhibited here. The abbey museum also offers an overview of the life and work of Willibrord, who founded the abbey in 698 and whose remains lie in the basilica crypt. The origins of the “Sprangpressessioun” (hopping procession), included in UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage of Humanity, date back to Willibrord’s death.

Larochette Castles: A royal view Two castles tower over this area, dominating the picturesque little town of Larochette. The buildings of the fortified castle, which date back to before the 12th century, are perched on a high rock made of Luxembourg sandstone, about 150 m above the valley of the White Ernz, a tributary of the river Sûre. The oldest part of the castle was formerly "Homburg Manor", which was destroyed by fire in 1565 and remains in ruins. "Créhange Manor" is the only building that has so far been fully restored. Temporary art exhibitions fill its historic rooms. The many footpaths and mountain biking routes in the area offer excellent views over the whole castle complex.

MOSELLE

Relaxation without borders The Moselle River meanders along the valley and region of the same name, forming a natural border with Germany. The romantic beauty of the valley draws visitors to its famous wineries, charming hotels and medieval towns. Popular white wine grape varieties grow on sunlit slopes, before being turned into Riesling, Pinot Gris or the region’s characteristic Auxerrois. Several kinds of fruit grow here and are made into spirits and juices. These local drinks can be enjoyed in picturesque villages and at traditional events. From the vineyards around Schengen, the emblem of a united Europe, you have a wonderful view over the Moselle, where on its far bank the rest of Europe unfolds.

MINETT

The heart of industrial heritage The Minett, also known as the Land of the Red Rocks, owes its name to the red soil that is still visible today. The colour comes from the iron ore in the soil, which was once the basis for the worldwide success of the Luxembourg steel industry. Today, the Minett Tour allows you to discover the back-breaking and frequently hazardous mining past. But you can also get a sense of progress and innovation in Belval. Soak up the modern architecture as it juts into the sky between the disused blast furnaces, and offers a home to the young university. See how nature is reclaiming the land and has earned the region the UNESCO Biosphere reserve label. The entire region can be hiked in several stages along the new 90-km Minett Trail.

You can dine in the brewery’s pub and even brew your own creation during one of the brewing workshops. Don’t worry if you’ve had a drop too much though, the "Brauhotel", just across the road, will be happy to accommodate you.

At "Minett Park Fond-de-Gras", over 100 years of industrial history in the south of Luxembourg are brought to life. The Train 1900 steam train links Pétange with Fond-de-Gras just as it used to around the turn of the last century. The “Minièresbunn” miners’ train takes visitors through a tunnel where iron ore used to be extracted, from Fond-de-Gras to the mining village of Lasauvage and as far as Saulnes (in France). In summer, the Blues Express music festival and the Steampunk Convention make this open-air museum buzz with life!
