A police officer in the small Arkansas town of Earle has died following a crash on Wednesday evening, our content partner K8 News reported.

Earle Mayor Jaylen Smith said Officer Kaylen Jacobs was killed in a Highway 118 crash at 8:05 p.m. on November 22.

The night of the crash, Crittenden County deputies arrived on the scene where they found Jacobs' patrol vehicle on the side of the road.

Deputies found Jacobs unresponsive inside the vehicle and quickly pulled him out to perform medical treatment. Crittenden County EMS units arrived shortly after and determined he was not breathing and had no pulse.

Crittenden EMS said Jacobs was taken to the Baptist Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Officials explained that Jacobs had suffered a major medical emergency as his vehicle was leaving the road.

Mayor Smith said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Cindy Murphy, communications director for the Arkansas Department of Public Safety, said Jacobs was on duty at the time of his fatal crash.

The crash is being investigated by Arkansas State Police.

According to K8 News, Jacobs' remains were escorted by police to his hometown of Osceola.
