MACROHON: National Grand Winner, Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan Awards

Siquijor Island – The town of Macrohon, Southern Leyte headed by Mayor Alan Jose Kuizon Aroy, MDMG won the 2018 Search for the Cleanest Coastal Community and bagged the grand prize of P30-M given by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) today.

Dubbed as Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan Awards (MMK), this year’s awarding ceremonies were held in the island province of Siquijor where most of the residents are fishermen.

The City of Alaminos, Pangasinan came in second winning P18-M while the town of Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte was third with P10-M prize.

Today’s winners were selected from among the 12 Regional winners which received P2-M each.

Winning towns are chosen based on five criteria:

– No garbage or wastes floating in the coastal area;

– No illegal fishing activities;

– A declared Closed Fishing Season every year;

– A declared Marine Sanctuary; and

– A protected Mangrove forest area.

The MMK was started in 2016 as a project envisioned by the Agriculture Secretary as part of the advocacy for sustainable fishing all over the country.

The program is among those which contributed to the positive growth of the Fisheries Sector of 1.04% in 2018 after decades of negative performance.
