The state housing and urban development department has decided to prepare comprehensive development plans or master plans for 62 cities and towns spread across the state in order to ensure their planned development. The master plan will define various zones, roads, drain infrastructure, and other aspects of development to execute the project. The department has invited a consultancy firm to prepare the plans. The selected firm will use GIS technology to prepare the master plans. The officer on special duty for town planning, Lingaraj Prasad Pattnaik, said that after the selection, the consultancy firm will get 84 weeks to complete the project. Some of the major cities and towns selected for preparing master plans are nimapara in Puri district, Khalikote in Ganjam, Bhubaneswar in Dhenkanal, and Soro in Balasore. The department has also selected many tribal and western towns for preparing plans. These include Gunupur in Rayagada district, Kotpad in Koraput, Balimela in Malkangiri, Umerkote in Nabarangpur, Junagarh in Kalahandi, Kantabanji in Balangir, and Attabira in Bargarh.
