This is, by far, the finest hotel in Gabbs, Nevada.

We wanted to visit the Berlin - Ichthyosaur State Park (VERY, cool!), and Gabbs was the closest town to the park. We made reservations here sight-unseen. Gabbs looks a little rough around the edges and, okay, even downright scummy in some places, but the residents we met were very friendly and pleasant.

Our first impression of the motel was that it looked scary as hell - as if no one has stayed in a room here in 20 or 30 years. Consequently, we drove right by it thinking it was NOT the motel we were looking for, as clearly it was abandoned. Wrong. This was our place.

It's pretty weird in appearance, but it turned out to be not too bad in practice.

The place is probably 60-70 years old, and it could use some minor repairs; it could definitely use some remodeling. There are some obviously repaired cracks in the walls, and the linoleum flooring is peeling up in the bathroom. However, it was reasonably clean inside - not big-motel-chain-pretty-darn-clean - but it was passable.

The bathroom towels were surprisingly soft and absorbent. Nice touch.

The television was tiny, but we were in the area to explore, not watch t.v. in the room. The bed was too firm for my back, but others might think this is a plus. The microwave and small 'fridge were clean and in good working order.

TRAVELER'S TIP: The original office at the motel is no longer in use; to register, you need to go to the cafe accross the street, which is open until about 2pm Tuesday-Saturday. We arrived when the cafe was closed, but the clerk at the market called someone, and they met us at the cafe where we registered and paid for the room. (See the pictures.)

Prices are very, very low: we paid $37.43 for two people (including local tax). This is, by far, the lowest priced motel in Gabbs.

3 stars because I think this may be your only overnight option in Gabbs. Yes, it's old, but not quaint old like the Mizpah, just old old.

I arrived in Gabbs at 8:30 or 9:00pm and stopped in the bar across the street. I chatted with the bar tender and she offered to call the motel's owner. Great, I won't have to sleep in my truck tonight, ha ha. I left the bar and crossed the street to the cafe. The woman quickly got me a key after I made my $38.13 credit card payment.

First off, the room is actually clean. The towels and bedding look like something you might have at your own house so it does feel a little homey. Lending to the unhominess is the early 70s metal office desk, yellowed linoleum, ancient carpet and the rest of the mish mash collection of decor. In spite of this I slept like a rock. I wouldn't hesitate to return.

i stayed there and, as an adult male, I have to say that the place is nothing but scary=like Bates's Motel scary. Like the door to the room was an old sliding-glass-window scary. Scary! Just stay in Hawthorne, NV, if you intend to visit the Berlin state park, as the drive is not that far. Trust me on this!
