This is a very nice little place in an out of the way location.
There was a large group there for a birthday party of about 20+ people, but our service did not suffer. Great staff.
The sports bar theme is done well with the bar separated from the dining area. The only thing about the interior was the noise. Placing some sound absorbing panels in the room would help, but the place is well kept and clean.
We had fried cheese balls for an appetizer and they were good.
I had the Kamrar Rueben and my wife had the crispy chicken sandwich. Both of them were tasty.
After sharing with others online that we were there we were told to try the pizza. Now we have a reason to go back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tony R.Seattle, WA372107Jul 9, 2022
Went here with family that lives in the area. We're from Washington State. Amazing place tucked out-if-the-way in VERY rural Iowa. Great service and food. Wonderful deep-fried pickles too! The pork tenderloin sandwich is to die for. Highly recommend the drive if you're in Des Moines.

My parents' live in the Goldfield Iowa area. I grew up not far from Kamrar in Dows and live in the Des Moines metro now, but even still Pickles Pub is a relatively new discovery for us...
The drive from Goldfield to Kamrar is 40ish minutes so it wasn't a monumental trek.
I liked the atmosphere in this little bar and grille and we had pretty good service. We'd ordered three full appetizers along with our entrees (cheese balls, mushrooms, and chicken strips) and somehow this turned into a combo platter(?)... Kind of hard to split two chicken tenders between the five of us... With the amount of food we ordered this really wasn't a huge deal though we'd rather or had the full apps.
The appetizers were all cooked well and tasted fine. The tenderloins on my sandwich and my father's were both pretty greasy... Someone needs to work with the kitchen on how to drain a tenderloin after it comes out of the fryer (stand that sucker on edge for a couple minutes...don't lay it flat).
I didn't catch our server's name, but her husband stopped in with their two very young kids for a meal and it was cute to watch the work-life balance. And I really do mean that... It's not a back handed compliment. I've worked two jobs and spent a lot of days away from my kids... I get it. This didn't distract her from her duties at all and like I said it was good to see a working parent get a little time with her kids. They'd likely both be in bed before she finished her shift.
The pizza... My family and my kids all really liked it. It was too doughy and soft for me. Just a preference thing I guess. No harm no foul.
I think my mom and dad had hyped up Pickles Pub a little too much and it just didn't meet my expectations. Would I go back? Sure. But I wouldn't get my hopes up that anything would be spectacular besides the service. I'd probably steer clear of the tenderloin and pizza and try something else... But that's just me.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Shelby C.Ames, IA40137361Aug 23, 2020
This is a very typical Iowa bar with Iowa taste buds. We had a Pickles burger and Pickles steak fries. Both OK but nothing to write home amount. However, 3 beers an app and an entree for $31 including tip, just can't beat it. Come here for Iowa experience just don't expect flavor to be here.

Great food very friendly inviting staff, I highly recommend this place. We were from out of state just in the area to pick up a boat. I felt like I was a local the way they treated us, definitely get the pizza!

Gluten free pizza is great! I got the bacon cheeseburger with pickles on the side, and it was very tasty! They also offer gluten free crust in multiple sizes. I got the medium, so I have plenty of leftovers! Their gluten free menu also included several salads, sandwiches, and entrees (ribs, steak, etc).
My family members shared a medium regular crust Pickles pizza (with sausage and several types of pickled peppers). They said it was great as well.
It's a busy pub in a very small town. So you know it must be good!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Aug 26, 2016
With a rare Saturday off from work, I decided to find a "hole in the wall place" relatively near home, but still requiring a little bit of a drive. Some internet searching led me to Pickles Pub. Walked in and was greeted relatively quickly. Domestic beers were ice cold and a good value at $2.75. I ordered the fried cauliflower and the tenderloin (with crinkle fries) as my meal. The cauliflower seemed a little plain (not much cheese), though it was breaded and not battered, which raised its stock slightly in my book. The ranch it was served with was something straight out of a bottle. A little disappointing, considering the high quality of my tenderloin. A very large piece of pork was presented that tasted pounded and was thin. I love tenderloins like this that give an appropriate bun/meat ratio. Standard crinkle fries--nothing discernible about them, but nothing negative to say either. The bartender checked in on me continually and there were no service issues present. Its a little ways off I-35 if you're going that way--I'd say its a coin flip to get off. If you're headed north, I'd definitely say its worth it, as there's very little between Story City and Clear Lake for food options.
Just as a note, Pickles was a "dead zone" for my US Cellular phone. Walking out the door gave me 4G, but I had no reception in the bar itself.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Amy B.Ames, IA02811Jul 27, 2019
Pizza is good. Be careful when you ask for extra ranch for appetizers as they are .50 extra. Also, my husband ordered the chicken fried steak and said it was awful. The kids ordered jalapeño bites and loved them. The place is always hoppin'! Big portions of cheese balls!

I had never heard of this town or restaurant before now. Was on the way back from NW Iowa with a group of friends when someone suggested we stop. I was expecting a creepy hole in the wall place with gross bar food but so happy I was wrong. The inside of the bar is very clean and maintained with a mix of booths, tables and high tops. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The food was very good and freshly made. Our group had several appetizers and entries and everyone was very satisfied with the quality. The only downfall to this place is that it is in the middle of nowhere and a significant drive from Des Moines.

I'm always so torn here. The food is amazing. The service is also amazing. The experience is always consistently high quality and it's worth driving to have dinner here. However......the prices for drinks are absolutely absurd. I've paid less in downtown Chicago. If you want a crappy beer that's normal price. But a Jack, Jameson, Long Island or others are just comically priced. $8 for a Jameson? Come on. Even in Des Moines it's like $5. Bad business model. I'm only gonna order one meal for myself. But I might have 3-4 cocktails. But there's no way I'll spend $32 for 4 cocktails in Kamrar.
