Kolkata: Baduria communal violence claimed its first casualty on Thursday with one person, reportedly a BJP activist, succumbing to his injuries in Kolkata.

Kartick Ghosh, a resident of Kakra in Basirhat, was admitted to the government-run RG Kar Hospital in North Kolkata. He bore injuries during the communal violence, which erupted following a Facebook post. BJP claimed that the man was an activist of their party.

When BJP General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and BJP state president Dilip Ghosh went to meet the relatives of the man, they encountered demonstrations and protests by members of the Trinamool Congress.

Both Vijayvargiya and Ghosh were not allowed to enter the hospital. A vehicle belonging to Locket Chatterjee, a BJP leader, was allegedly vandalised.

Vijayvargiya allegedly told the mediapersons, “Trinamool Congress activists stopped us from visiting family members of the deceased. We want peace but they are creating trouble.”

Dilip Ghosh alleged that the TMC workers were out to assault him and hit his vehicle.

BJP and TMC supporters got engaged in a scuffle when the top-level leaders were prevented from entering the hospital. A huge police force was deployed to control the situation.

Normalcy has been slowly restored in Baduria with BSF deployed in the area. Shops and markets were opened and people returned to work.

West Bengal Police tweeted: “Some channels are irresponsibly spreading rumour that police/para military is not being allowed to work. The problem was localized and confined to a small area…Situation is peaceful today and under control.”

Director General of Police Surajit Kar Purakayastha has requested people to refrain from spreading hatred.

Meanwhile, the administration has banned activities of two organisations -- Hindu Sanghati and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) -- in the area. They have been barred from organising any rallies or assembly to prevent further communal violence. Internet services continued to be disrupted and paramilitary forces and police remained posted in the troubled area.
