Canadian town of Asbestos is looking for a new name

It’s a breath of fresh air.

The Canadian town of Asbestos will officially change its name, after local officials decided its association to the cancer-causing mineral was hurting economic growth, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

“There is really a negative perception around asbestos,” Asbestos mayor Hugues Grimard told CBC. “We have lost businesses that don’t want to establish themselves here because of the name.”

The Quebec town of 7,000 is home to a large asbestos mine, which was worked by local residents for more than 100 years.

Once a popular home insulator, asbestos fell out of favor after it was linked to lung cancer and other conditions.

The town mine was closed in 2012.

Asbestos the town is soliciting suggestions from locals for a new name.
