Just when we thought the rain was behind us, Mother Nature reminds us that the warm and sunny weather we experienced last week was a false start to spring. Rain is expected to return on Thursday and continue through at least Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Mahere Film Pre-Screening at Eastside Arts Alliance

Friends of the Congo, The Original Blackprint, EastSide Arts Alliance, Black Cultural Zone, Artist As First Responders, and The Wallace Foundation are teaming up for a special screening of the film Mahere (sacred shared space.) The film explores how humans interact with nature. It also addresses colonialism and cultural heritage. After the film, there will be a Q&A with Congolese director and community organizer Petna Ndaliko Katondolo.

The Luniz at The New Parish

Grammy-nominated Oakland hip-hop duo The Luniz, formed by Yukmouth and Numskull, first gained fame in the mid-90s and are best known for their international hit I Got 5 On It. The rappers will transport fans back to the 90s this weekend with a hometown show with surprise special guests.

Cultural Food Traditions Project: Puerto Rico

Slow Food East Bay, a grassroots organization that promotes access to healthy food for all, is hosting a dinner as part of the Cultural Food Traditions Project. This is the third dinner of the series after the first two, focusing on the foods of  Hawaii and the Philipines. For the third installment, the dinner will focus on Puerto Rico’s cuisine and how colonization and climate change have changed its food system. The food will be prepared by chef Manny Rodriguez, who has been working as sous chef at The Snail Bar. The partner nonprofit for the evening’s donation is the Puerto Rican Civic Club. This regional organization supports Puerto Rican Culture and provides support during natural disasters. The night also includes a conversation between Rodrigeuz and Maria Acevedo of the Puerto Rican Civic Club.

Drag Brunch at Parche

When Port Bar announced its closure, one of the silver linings was that none of the events that used to take place at the now-shuttered bar would end. The bar’s popular Sunday Drag Brunch found a new home at Parche, an Uptown Oakland Colombian restaurant. The inaugural brunch at its new home took place on Feb. 4 and will be held on the first and third Sunday of every month with two performances at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Creative Mornings: Virtual Fieldtrips

Creative Mornings, the monthly breakfast and conversation with an artist, maker, entrepreneur, or creative individual from the community, also has online events called Virtual Fieldtrips with a hefty calendar of events to take advantage of when the false spring leaves and the rain returns. Some upcoming virtual events include From Lens to Launch: The Lifecycle of a Video and Hands-On Poetry Workshop.
