Romblon Province History
Long before the Spaniards arrived in the province in the year 1569, there were already inhabitants in the province as evidenced by artifacts found in the Guyangan Cave in Banton Island.
It was the Recollect Missionaries who established parishes in the province in the 1630s. There were recurring raids from Moro Pirates that necessitated the building of forts and watch towers.
Throughout the Spanish Period, Romblon was a sub-province of Capiz. During the Philippine Revolution, General Mariano Riego de Dios led the liberation of Romblon after which, it was established as a province with Wenceslao Molo as the appointed governor. It was agained annexed to Capiz during the early parts of the American Occupation. On 7 December 1917, the province regained its status as a regular province by virtue of Act No. 2724.
The province of Romblon was subdued by the Japanese forces in 1942 but it was liberated in 1945. In the post-war era, several towns were created such as Alcantara in 1961, Calatrava in 1969, Ferrol in 1978, and Santa Maria in 1984.

Economy of Romblon Province
Most of the people of Romblon are engaged in farming and fishing. Some are employed in the marble industry.
Tourism is being promoted as an alternative source of income. The island of Carabao where the municipality of San Jose is located is being eyed as a tourism zone due to the presence of white sand beaches.
