On Nov. 19, 1990, the pop duo Milli Vanilli was stripped of their Grammy Award. The pair had won the title of Best New Artist after their debut album, Girl You Know It’s True, became a mega-hit with singles “Girl You Know It’s True” and “Blame It On The Rain” topping charts around the globe. Unfortunately, it soon came to light that the band’s photogenic frontmen, Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, weren’t the singers heard on the tracks. German producer and songwriter Frank Farian had recorded the album using studio musicians, then recruited the dancers/models known as Rob and Fab to be the faces of the band – no singing required.

At the peak of Milli Vanilli’s fame, Pilatus told TIME magazine that he and Morvan had contributed more to pop music than Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger.

Milli Vanilli’s secret was outed after a technical glitch at a live MTV performance on MTV left fans listening to a skipping backing track and the phrase “girl, you know it’s true” on repeat. A few weeks later, Rob and Fab gave back their Grammy Award and slowly disappeared from the spotlight.

Tragically, Pilatus passed away, at age 33, due to a fatal combination of drugs and alcohol on the eve of what they hoped would be their 1998 comeback tour. Morvan told PEOPLE that his biggest regret was the death of his friend.

Despite all the scandal and tragedy, we can’t help but still love their songs. Here are five videos to help you remember why you were obsessed with Milli Vanilli – regardless of who was really singing:

Girl You Know It’s True

Best Lyrics: “You’re soft, succulent, so sweet and thin/ That’s kind of like a vision upon your skin/ It lightens up my day, and that’s oh so true/ Together we’re one separated we’re two”

Baby Don’t Forget My Number

Best Lyrics: “Ba, ba, ba, baby in your eyes I see it so clearly that our love, it’s so strong/ And you never go wrong/ I got the best for you”

Girl, I’m Gonna Miss You

Best Lyrics: “Like a honey bee/ You took the best of me/ Now I can’t erase those memories/ Like a fairy tale/ You are so unreal/ You left a scar that’s so hard to heal”

All or Nothing

Best Lyrics: “I’m under heat oh baby/ Please take it slow/ Give me some time and maybe/ Our love will grow”

Blame It On The Rain

Best Lyrics: “Blame it on the rain/ Blame it on the stars/ Whatever you do don’t put the blame on you/ Blame it on the rain yeah yeah”
