UMBERTO TOZZI (ITALY)

Born 4 March 1952
Full name: Umberto Antonio Tozzi

Tozzi was born in Turin in Italy. He would join a band called Off Sound when he was 16 and then moved on to a 13-piece band which would tour extensively in Italy. His first success came as a songwriter when a song he had helped composed, ‘Un Corpo, un’anima’ (translates as One Body One Soul), was performed on an Italian music show. He released his debut album, ‘Donna, Amante Mia’, in 1976. The album contained the single ‘Ti Amo’ which went on to spend 13 weeks at the top of the Italian charts. In 1978 he spent a further 13 weeks at 1 in Italy with the song ‘Tu’. He would have to wait until 1987 to see his next number 1 which was ‘’Si Puo Dare Di Piu’ which was a collaborative hit, singing with Gianni Morandi and Enrico Ruggeri. While he has not seen much success as an artist outside of Italy, his compositions have made it big, in particular ‘Gloria’ which had English lyrics supplied by Jonathan King and was a global hit for Laura Branigan. Branigan also had a hit with a cover of ‘Ti Amo’.

Tozzi’s version of ‘Gloria’ would see a better peak on our charts than Laura Branigan’s version which only made it to number 9. Of the 13 Italian acts that charts, only 1 would not manage a top 20 hit and Tozzi would rank the 3rd lowest on both a top 20 and a top 30 points basis.
