The municipality has 1.220 inhabitants and an area of 1.998 hectares for a population density of 61 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises on a mountainous inland area and is 1.027 metres above sea-level. The Town Hall is placed in piazza Aldo Moro n. 29, phone ++39 095-925373 fax. ++39 095-925382. Placed on south-eastern side of mounts Nebrodi, Santa Domenica Vittoria has a rich production of wine-grapes, chestnuts, grain, and excellent hazel-nuts. Breedings present are cattle, pig and sheep ones. Important is the production of typical Sicilian cheese like buttermilk curd which can be tasted in the annual Fair of Cattle kept in September. Once it was a simple farmhouse and derives its name from Santa Domenica, a Calabrian saint and has kept it till 1706. In this year it was added Vittoria in honour of princess Vittoria Alliata of Villafranca who was able to get by the Archbishop Migliaccio the autonomy of the church of Santa domanica. Among several noble families who got the village we cite Spadafora and princes of Villafranca. The most interesting monument is the church of St. Antonio Abbot (patron of the village) built in 1700 with typical Rinascimento elements. Also houses are very peculiar: they present some fronts made by local stone and the old Baronial Tower of Medieval period. |
