Marineo (Zip Code 90035) is 142 km. distant from Agrigento, 124 km. from Caltanissetta, 231 km. from Catania, 143 km. from Enna, 266 km. from Messina, 30 km. from Palermo, which province it belongs to, 265 km. from Ragusa, 289 km. from Siracusa, 118 km. from Trapani. The municipality has 6.772 inhabitants and an area of 3.332 hectares for a density of population of 203 inhabitants petr square kilometre. Grapes, olives, cereals, vegetables and almonds are the main products of the agriculture, while in the handicraft there is wood and wrought iron working. The name of Marineo has uncertain origins. The first village was founded in 1553 by Francesco Beccadelli Bologna. He was also the Lord of the neighbouring Cefalà and Capaci. In 1559 he made built a castle as country residence at the foot of the cliff Rocca. Then the small feud was raised to marquisate and was ruled by the Earls Pilo of Capaci. Photo © Wikipedia
In the monumental field there is the castle that dates back to 1559 and the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Dajna that preserves a remarkable treasure of the XV century. Inside the Cathedral Church it is kept an urn containing the Skull of St. Ciro. Marineo is remembered in the history because it has been stage where Garibaldi was on 25 May 1860 when he was escaping the Bourbons and he led inside the island.
