The Communal Theatre

In 1607 the town took its name from its founder's name, the countess of Modica Vittoria Colonna, Marcantonio Colonna's daughter, viceroy of Sicily.

Under the control of the counts of Modica, Vittoria increased both economically and demographically: many buildings were made and many people came from the nearby villages.

The urban core rose around the castle and the Mother Church; after the earthquake in 1693 the town was enlarged and this process is still continuing today.

Amongst the most important monuments we mention the Communal Theatre built in Neo-classical style in the 19th century, the church of S. Maria delle Grazie (originally built in the 17th century and later rebuilt in the 18th century), the Mother Church (17th century) with its annexed oratory of the Crucifix.

Vittoria is one of the main wine production centres of Sicily; this can easily be deduced from the the famous Sicilian expression "Bianco di Alcamo e Cesaruolo di Vittoria": Cesaruolo is actually the name of a typical wine from this area.
