Buccheri (Zip Code 96010) is 161 Km. distant from Agrigento, 132 Km. from Caltanissetta, 59 Km. from Catania, 107 Km. from Enna, 155 Km. from Messina, 268 Km. from Palermo, 37 Km. from Ragusa, 52 Km. from Siracusa, that is the province it belongs to, 334 Km. from Trapani. The municipality has 2.606 inhabitants, its surface measures 5.743 hectares and its population density counts 45 inhabitants for square kilometre. It rises inland over a hilly area, 820 metres above the sea-level. The Town Hall is located in via Cappuccini, tel. ++39 0931-873566 fax. ++39 0931-873280. E-mail address of Municipality is: segretario@comune.buccheri.sr.it. It is mainly an agricultural centre, and it produces olives, hazelnuts, cereals, citrus fruits, cork. There are also cow and sheep farms. According to philological studies, its name comes from the Arab Bukir, which means ox breeding. The most important monuments are the church of St. Mary Magdalene, the church of St. Anthony the Abbot, the Fountain of Four Channels built in the 16th century with lava stone, the ruins of the castle and St. Nicholas's grotto. One of the characteristic festivals of Buccheri is the Medfest, a costume procession held every year in August. |
