About Sira

Located in the Tumkur District of Karnataka State, Sira is a city located on the National Highway No. 4 that connects Pune and Bangalore. The National Highway No. 234, connecting Villupuram and Mangalore also passes through Sira. Sira is also the Taluka headquarters. It is located in the northern part of Tumkur District. Sira City Municipal Council looks after the general administration of this city. Sira is emerging as one of the most happening tourist places of Karnataka.    

History of Sira

Sira was initially known by the name Siriay.  Sira Town was founded by Rangappa Nayaka, a Nayaka chief from Ratnagiri. Because of its strategic location, Sira was always an important town in the British India. From 1638 to 1687, Sira was under the rule of Bijapur Kings. During the Mughal rule, Sira Town was also the capital of Province of Sira. From 1757 to 1759, Sira was under the control of the Marathas. In 1761, Hyder Ali became the Nawab of Sira after it was recaptured from the Marathas. Later on Hyder Ali lost the province to the Marathas in 1766 but it was again recaptured by Tipu Sultan, son of Hyder Ali in the year 1774.

Location of Sira is at 13.75 Degrees North Latitude and 76.51 Degrees East Longitude. The city is located at an elevation of 661 m above the sea level. The summer temperature of Sira ranges from 33 Degrees Celsius to 38 Degrees Celsius during summers while the temperature ranges between 25 0C to 30 0C during winters.

The total population of Sira is 57, 749. The percentage of males is 52 % and percentage of females is 48% in Sira. The average literacy rate of Sira is about 67%. The language spoken here is the Kannada Language.

The most famous place of Sira is the Kasturi Rangappa Nayaka Fort. This fort is dedicated to the Nayaka Rulers though later on it was taken under the control of the Mughal Rulers of Delhi.

Mallik Rehan Dargah

This is the mausoleum of Mallik Rehan, the governor of Sira Province during the period 1638 to 1650. This dargah is now under the protection of ASI. The Jamia Masjid of Sira was built during the rule of Malik Rehan.

Another attraction around Sira Town is Kaggaladu Heronry, the largest nesting place of grey herons and painted storks in Karnataka. This heronry is spread on stretches of government and privately owned lands where herons and storks take shelter and breed and they get protection from the local people. This place is situated on Sira – Chengavara Main Road.

Basavangi Betta and Fort, Kote Sri Karegundi Anjaneyaswamy Temple, the Khan Bagh, Ibrahim Rauza, Seebi, Bada Eidgah and the Big Banyan Tree are some other attractions around Sira.

Sira is easily reachable from various parts of the state by road. As two important national highways pass through Sira, travelers can reach Sira by bus and private taxis and cabs. The nearest airport to Sira is Kempe Gowda International Airport. Sira does not have any railway station of its own.
