Jamalpur is best known as a very large workshop on the East Indian Railway, employing over 30,000 people at one time. The town was established during the British Raj and the cultural hub at that time was the Railway Institute. The Railway Institute was huge – it had its own movie theatre, a six-lane swimming pool, eight tennis courts, four billiard rooms and a bowling lawn. Its dances were renowned and railway folk came from all over the East India Railway (EIR) to attend.

Jamalpur Railway Colony(East Colony) is a Paradise as compared to the city on the West of the Railway station. My father MR.M.M.MEHTA joined as an apprentic mechanic(1943 batch) and served until 1980 as Production Engineer when he was transferred to Liluah.
Having studied at Notre Dame Academy during my childhood until 1965,I still miss the treks on the seven ranges of the Jamalpur hills, the trip to the Water Works, the football matches at the JSA,the morning runs around the race course and most important, the refreshing tea and samosas of HIRA LAL at Albert Road.

Jamalpur…really a beautiful small railway town with a proud history…..developed by the British & demolished by the Indians….In a very short span of my life of 27 years …I’ve seen JMP demolishing day by day….the no-maintenance town…I’ve to say a lot more but the space is less….I’ve only 2 dreams…the first one is to get my father’s 1969 model Lambretta scooter repaired..& the 2nd one is to Renovate my home town-Jamalpur to make as beautiful as it was during British -Emperor.

after my college examinations were over, I wanted to show my Home-Town JMP to my college frnds & we planned our trip on 30th of Aug.’10. But the encounter between security forces and Maoists in forests of Kajra Hills (Next to the Jmp Hills) demolished our Plan….ok .. next time

BORN AND BROUGHT UP IN THIS UNASSUMING EXTRAGAVENZA OF NATURE WHICH NO HILL STATION CAN COMBINE TOGETHER, THE EXOTIC FLORA AND FAUNA,THE MOUNTAIN TRAILS,THE EXUBERANCE AND FRESHNESS OF THE MORNING BREEZE,THE QUAINT DROPLETS OF THE MONSOON SEASON AND THE MORNING MIST OF WINTER MORNINGS CAN NEVER BE UNDERMINED OR FORGOTEN,AT LEAST NOT TILL THE THOUGHT SURVIVES THAT OUR LOVED ONES ARE IN DEEP SLEEP IN THEIR GRAVES HERE JUST AT THE FOOTHILLS OF THIS PARADISE JAMALPUR.
