Magadi - Someshwara Temple

Magadi

Someshwara temple at Magadi, 60 km west of Bengaluru, Karnataka, was built by Kempe Gowda II in 1569 CE.

It’s a beautiful Vijayanagara style temple with tall pillars and attractive carvings in spacious setting.

Magadi was founded by the Chola rulers around 1139 CE. Magadi is also the birthplace of Kempe Gowda I, the Vijayanagara chieftain, who founded Bengaluru in 1537 CE.

The Ranganatha temple built in early 12th century CE by Chola rulers is nearby. The Gopurams were added by Sri Krishnadevaraya (Vijayanagara) in 1524 CE. Legend has it that the main deity (Ranganatha) was established by Sage Mandavya eons ago.
