Castropignano Is A Picture-Perfect Italian Village Selling Homes For €1

Castropignano Is A Picture-Perfect Italian Village Selling Homes For €1This is the perfect chance for anyone who dreams of owning their own vacation home in the heart of beautiful, rural Italy.

The One Euro House scheme started at the beginning of 2018. Towns and villages across Italy have signed up to the scheme. What it entails is, any empty houses are put up for auction from €1 ($1.21) in a bid to attract new residents to depopulated rural areas.

Castropignano sells homes for €1

The latest quaint, rural place to sign up to the scheme is Castropignano, a hilltop medieval village in the southern region of Molise. The region is renowned for its gorgeous beaches, coastal towns, snowcapped mountains, villages and traditional hilltop villages like Castropignano. For anyone looking for “la dolce vita,” (the sweet life) this is the perfect place.

The mayor of Castropignano is Nicola Scapillati. He issued a notice last month to announce that they are giving away abandoned homes in the village “free of charge,” or for a nominal fee of €1. As of now, however, instead of giving a home to the highest bidder, the mayor says he wants to match potential buyers with the perfect home to suit their individual interests.

Speaking to CNN, Scapillati said he welcomes anyone who would like to purchase a home in Castropignano to email him directly. They must send a detailed plan of how they intend to restyle the home. Potential purchasers should also tell him what they want to do with the property. Do they want to make it into a home, store, artisan shop or B&B?

The mayor continued, saying potential buyers should list any particular requirements they may have; for instance, access for people in wheelchairs. He warned that the village is tiny and it is difficult for cars to navigate the narrow alleys and steps, so it might not be suitable for everyone.

‘Nothing grand to offer’

According to Scapillati, the village has “nothing grand to offer.” He then went on to list all the wonderful aspects of living in Castropignano, including “peacefulness, silence, pristine nature, oxygen-rich air, great views and fantastic food, ideal to detox from the daily stress.”

This sounds pretty grand to us; however, it isn’t quite that easy. Whoever purchases the homes will need to completely renovate and bring life to the property again. All the abandoned homes on offer in the village are run-down buildings, badly in need of major renovation. Anyone that buys a home is asked to sign a policy of €2,000 ($2,378) with a two-year guarantee. Should all go well with fixing up the home, the money will be refunded at the end of the renovation term.
