Imagine a place where you could relax under the shade of the tropical forest and bath in volcanic water, sipping coconut water. This amazing place exists in Ometepe and is called the Ojo de Agua! The Ojo de Agua is located in the community of Santo Domingo, in the municipality of Altagracia, Ometepe Island.
The water from this natural pool, known under the name of Ojo de Agua, comes directly from the Concepción Volcano. Because it is a volcanic water, it is very rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, sulfur and sodium. All those chemical components have properties that help diminishing fever, muscular pain, stress, some allergies and some people say that they even help rejuvenate!
This natural site was remodeled years ago and they constructed a second pool in order to accept more tourists in better conditions. This place is perfect to relax, take a bath without getting sand everywhere, and be in shades space, surrounded by nature.
The pools have a constant temperature of 24-26°C (75-79°F), a depth of minimum 50 cm and maximum 3.50 m. There are strings to swing above the water, a children area and a watchman for higher security.
The site offer all the required facilities such as showers, changing room and toilets. There are also several seats around the pools and some ranchitos with roofs made of straw were the tourist can relax drinking come coconut drinks made in live (natural coconut water for C$25 and coco loco, coconut with rum, for C$80).
In the entrance of the ojo de agua, there is a restaurant open all day long that offers breakfasts for US$4 to US$5 and meals from US$8 to US$16. Moreover, you will be able to have access to stands with handicrafts from US$4 to US$10. The craftsmen sell imitations of petroglyphs and statues made out of volcanic silica, and jewels made with leather, wires, fabric and stones.
We need to inform you that the entrance to that place costs US$2 for nationals and US$3 for foreigners. Children under 8 years old do not have to pay. The Ojo de Agua is opened during the whole year, from Monday to Sunday, from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm.
It is possible to rent some cabins. The price will vary according to the number of people (US$50 for one person, US$150 for 5 to 6 persons) but will always include a mini bar, breakfast and the entrance to the site. For more information, call the Direction of the Ojo de Agua.
Getting There
Public Transport
Being in Moyogalpa, you can take any bus going in the direction of Altagracia and ask them to stop in front of the entrance of the Ojo de Agua, in Santo Domingo. Buses go on from Monday to Friday, every 30 minutes approximately. The cost per person is C$25.
Being in Altagracia, you can take any bus going in the direction of Mayogalpa, Mérida or Balgüe and ask them to stop in front of the entrance of the Ojo de Agua, in Santo Domingo. Buses go on from Monday to Friday, every 30 minutes approximately. The cost per person is C$10.
Another option is to go to the UGO office in the main Street of Moyogalpa, next to the Hotel Ometepetl, on the right side of the street, and contract the services of a guide including transport.
Finally, you can also go for the option of taking a taxi. From Moyogalpa, it should cost you approximately US$25, and from Altagracia, US$10.
Private transport
You can rent motorcycles in different points of the Island.
If you want to bring your own vehicle to the Island, you can do so with the ferry. The cost of that service will depend on the type of car you have and on the number of passengers. In order to get more information, you can call the different ferry companies (Ferry Ometepe, Ferry Cocibolca and Ferry Che Guevarra). When arriving to the harbor, you have to take the road in direction of Altagracia, and turn right when you see the signs indicating Santo Domingo Beach. Once you are in the road to Santo Domingo, you will see a sign indicating the entrance to the Ojo de Agua at some point and if you are lost, just ask, everyone knows that place.
