Enjoy the views over Victoria’s largest permanent inland lake. Look over to the west and you will see scattered volcanic peaks of South West Victoria.
Lake Corangamite was formed when cooling lava flows altered watercourses and effectively formed a natural dam. Lake Corangamite is 3 times saltier than sea water and hosts an array of migratory water birds in spring and summer.
From Red Rock lookout 7 crater lakes are visible and there are close to 40 separate eruption points in the Red Rock complex.
The Red Rock lookout, 12 km from Colac, is one of Australia’s youngest volcanoes.
The area is the third largest volcanic plain in the world and estimated to be 8,000 years old. The volcanic complex consists of overlapping maars, scoria cones and small lava flows.
