Uphill Boatyard and Nature Reserve.

This walk packs a lot in boats, feeding ducks, climbing hills, a castle lookout, astounding views, a quarry and a lovely cafe.

Length – as long or short as you want, but we did 2.3km.

Dogs – Yes.

Push chairs – Yes!

This is a walk with a lot of choice, there’s a very well paved path for push chairs or wheel chairs which has slopes but nothing too steep or you can explore some of the many footpaths up the hill to see the castle lookout or towards the river and the sea.

There’s plenty of parking at Uphill Boatyard,

Uphill Wharf, Weston-super-Mare BS23 4XR. From here walk up the paved path past the cafe, be sure to stop at the cafe doorway and collect some free bread to feed the ducks.

Straight ahead is the boatyard and then the pond where you can see lots of different bird and of course feed the ducks.

Keep following the paved path straight ahead and through the gate, on your left is a short optional path which leads to the quarry.

After enjoying the rocks head back to the main path and carry on. Through another gate and up a slope. At the top on your left is a grassy hill which we chose to climb. It’s not pushchair friendly so if you are on wheels just miss this section out.

If you climb the hill you”ll see a lookout beacon tower shaped like a mini castle, unfortunately you can’t go inside, but the 360 degree views from the top of the hill of are well worth the climb and you can still pretend you’re a brave knight attacking an enemy castle.

From here we headed back down the hill, but if you go towards the church you can do a cirular route down to the road on the otherside of the hill and back to the car park.

Once back on the paved path we carried on through a couple more gates until we saw some reeds (or tickling sticks) on the left, just after this is a gate on the right. We headed through here and across the fields. Id you’re on wheels you can carry on as far as you want along the paved path, then turn back the way you came.

After you climb over the muddy stile you can go left or straight on, we went straight on and it took us back to the path. There is a difficult stile here which is quite high when you have an 18 month old on your back. I found climbing the gate easier. Then you’re back on the main path so get yourself back to the cafe to warm up.

The cafe is lovely and built into the rocks of the quarry, very child friendly with high chairs, baby change and books to read.

There are lots of other routes here and loads more to explore and I’m sure I’ll be back.
