Friday, August 7: Heavy rains are likely to continue over Bihar for the next 2-3 days, and considering the forecasted rough weather, a yellow watch has been issued for the entire state between August 7-10.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bihar is likely to witness heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning from Friday to Sunday. Furthermore, The Weather Channel predicts a few parts of the state may experience scattered rains and thunderstorms on Friday, with heavy rainfall activity on the cards for Saturday.
IMD’s regional met department in Patna has placed a yellow watch over all the districts of the state on August 8 and 9, urging all its residents to ‘be updated’ on the weather conditions in their locality.
On Thursday, August 6, light to moderate showers occurred at most places of North West, North Central, South West, South East parts of Bihar, and at many locations in the North East and South Central parts.
Moreover, the districts of Darbhanga, Jahanabad, Bihpur, Hayaghat, Supaul, Rosera, Ramnagar, and Chapra witnessed heavy rainfall activity over the past 24 hours.
In fact, since the beginning of the monsoon, i.e. between June 1 to August 6, Bihar has collectively recorded ‘excess’ rainfall of 801.1 mm. In this time frame, a total of 13 districts have received ‘excess’ precipitation as compared to their respective long-term average figures for this period.
Due to the incessant rainfall, the ongoing flood situation continues to impact the entire state. As per the Central Water Commission (CWC), districts Araria, Purnia, Katihar, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Purba Champaran, Khagaria, Sitamarhi, Gopalganj, Samastipur, and Siwan continue to experience flooding at present.
Heavy rainfall and flood-related disasters have claimed the lives of 21 people in the state, while more than 69 lakh people have been impacted across 16 Bihari districts. Further, nearly 4.82 lakh individuals have also been evacuated from badly inundated areas and moved to safer locations.
