LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (WGME) – Thursday marks 10 years since a runaway train derailed in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, killing dozens and destroying the downtown.

Lac-Megantic is just over the Maine border.

It was in the early morning hours of July 6, 2013, when dozens of tanker cars carrying crude oil jumped the tracks and slammed into buildings.

The fire burned for days, destroying the heart of the downtown area.

In all, 47 people were killed.

Multiple Franklin County fire departments were called to assist at the scene.

Town officials say it took two years to decontaminate the downtown after oil spilled both on land and into the lake.

About 2,000 or one third of the town's residents were forced out of their homes.
