Daniel-Johnson Dam (Manic-5)

This dam, formerly known as Manic-5, is the highest multiple-arch and buttress dam in the world.

It was built between 1959 and 1970 for hydroelectric power production, consisting of 14 buttresses and 13 arches. Visitors can admire the beauty of the exterior and interior of Daniel-Johnson Dam in all its glory. The dam’s base is adorned by a crest and has a magnificent view of the Manicouagan River Valley. Additionally, there is a lookout a few minutes away from the dam with a picnic area.

People visiting the dam can get a guided tour that involves a briefing on construction and operations, a visit to the dam, and a bus ride to the dam’s base. These tours are available every 2-3 hours and presented in both languages, with English offered using an audio guide. It is recommended that guests bring a sweater, and closed shoes are mandatory.

Centrale Jean-Lesage (Manic-2)

Open from the end of June to early September

This dam, formerly known as Manic-2, is one of the largest hollow-joint gravity dams with a 420-tonne rotor motor. It was constructed between 1961 and 1967 and renamed to Jean-Lesage in 2010 in honour of the Quebec premier at the time of its construction. It has 8 generating units to power the dam, with rotors spinning to generate electricity. The Georges Dor building on-site offers exhibitions on the world’s first 735-kV transmission line.

Guests can take a guided tour lasting 90 minutes to enter the cavities of the dam and see one of the turbines inside the hydroelectric powerhouse. Additionally, you can check out the exhibition on the 735-kV transmission line that created a new age of electricity transmission in modern society. It is recommended that guests bring a sweater, and closed shoes are mandatory. The tours and the exhibition are provided in both official languages. Mont Ti-Basse

Open from mid-December to mid-April

This gorgeous ski area contains three ski lifts near the lodge and 16 runs/courses for all your skiing, snowboarding, and tubing needs. There are four easy courses, four runs of average difficulty, and eight very difficult ones to accommodate people of all levels. It also has a snow park and banked slalom course for those interested in something different.

There are many different activities found at Mont Ti-Basse outside of skiing and snowboarding, including a 15 km snowshoeing trail, snowmobile areas, fat biking, racing events, and more programs for people of all ages! Visitors can access multiple services and amenities, including equipment rental, restaurant, cafeteria, bar, ski shop, and more!

Parc des Pionniers

This beautiful park is home to two walking trails heading to the marina port to see the boats on the blue waters of the Saint-Laurent. These trails are ideal for hiking and cycling, passing through the wooded forest with a gorgeous waterfall where people can immerse themselves in the sounds of nature. It also contains a playground for kids, an outdoor gym and petanque area, a huge event stage, picnic tables, and much more!

Many sculptures are found on the grounds of Parc des Pionniers, which are rotated every few seasons. There is also easy access to the plage Champlain (beach), where you can enjoy the water and go for a swim or kayaking. If you come for a visit in the wintertime, you can experience the famed Quebec sugar shacks and go skating. If you’re in the area for a vacation, you must drop by Parc des Pionniers to partake in its wide range of activities!

Jardin des Glaciers

The Jardin des Glaciers is an interactive exhibition where people can learn about the ice age and climate changes worldwide. It is a sensory experience available to people of all ages, depicted as a multimedia show that allows you to experience a glacier personally. The projections are separated into three acts, seeing how glaciers changed the planet’s climate during history and how ice masses impacted the environment. Near the attraction is the Vallée des Coquillages (Seashell Valley), where guests can admire the beautiful geological features of this deposit.

The mission of the Jardin des Glaciers is to tell an inspiring story that allows visitors to learn more about the past and dream of the future. Additionally, they aim to educate and increase awareness of how climate change affects us. Although it has been closed for the summer in 2021 and 2022 due to the pandemic, please look forward to its reopening to witness a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Boisé-de-la-Pointe-St-Gilles

This walking trail is 11 km long and offers a peaceful encounter with nature through various environments, from wooded terrains to seashores. The trail comprises around 15 different paths that vary in difficulty, accommodating everyone whether they want a leisure walk or a challenge. Some of the trails include Sentier de la Falaise, which goes to plage Champlain (beach), Versant-Sud, and Sentier sur le Flanc, with a view of the Saint-Laurent.

This striking landscape is overflowing with fauna and flora, waiting to be discovered by all. Many sculptures, descriptive wood panels, and La Fontaine’s fables are found along the trail, making the experience exciting and sensational for locals and tourists alike. There are various shelters and lookout points on the path, which lets visitors admire the terrain’s natural beauty. Visitors can admire the harbour seals and various species of birds from the rest areas.

Sentier des Embruns

This 23 km hiking trail was completed in 2019 as part of a citizen initiative and sustainable development to bring about the appreciation of the Manicouagan River and other local areas. It connects various sectors and other trails, allowing those that take its paths to access the Saint-Laurent and Manicouagan River. Along the way, there are many observation points and rest areas. Additionally, there are various educational and information panels on the fauna and flora of the boreal forest.

The gorgeous Sentier des Embruns is excellent for those who like taking a walk in the great outdoors and admiring the nature surrounding them. The whole trail runs along the river and offers a great view while getting exercise. Since the trail is very lengthy, it is recommended to separate it into several sections or call a taxi to return to the starting point once completed.

Véloroute des Baleines

This cycling route is a tremendous 330 km long and borders the Saint-Laurent and multiple lakes, beaches, mountains, and forests. It follows Route 138, which runs along the Saint-Laurent and passes through the town of Baie-Comeau. The path is separated into six detailed routes to make it easier for people based on the intentions behind their trip. Each route has tourist attractions that guests can visit along the path. For example, there is the whale route where people can observe whales and other mammals and a birdwatching route.

Cyclists can find various restaurants, lodgings, and even ferries along the road of Véloroute des Baleines. Every year at the end of June, there is a challenging run where cyclists can test their limits and spend a whole day going through 100 km of the course. For those that want to take a leisure ride on their bike in the area, the six detailed routes offer different difficulty levels to accommodate beginners and expert cyclists. Experience de Véloroute des Baleines for yourself and take in the sights of the town!

Église Sainte-Amélie

Église Sainte-Amélie was the first Catholic Church to be built in the town after Baie-Comeau was founded in 1937. This historical church was built in 1939 and 1940, with the ceiling fresco being nearly 1,500 m2 as realized by Guido Nincheri. It contains three bells named Robert, Arthur, and Catherine, which were moulded in France before the Second World War. The church offers guided visits that introduce the history of its construction, along with the presentation of the many art pieces that adorn the walls and ceiling.

It has since been classified as a heritage building that constitutes the historical culture of the region. The locals treasure it as an establishment based on artistic values with cultural and social implications. There are a total of four marble sculptures on site that are also preserved as treasured historical objects. Visit the wonderful Église Sainte-Amélie and encounter the historical art and objects of worship from the past!

Microbrasserie St-Pancrace

This brewery was inspired by the events in 1932, where bootlegged alcohol was thrown overseas in St-Pancrace Bay. The first beer created by the brewery saw the light of day in 2012 before the brewery officially opened its doors in 2013. They started distributing their beers in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec in 2014 and opened the local beer factory in 2017 to increase production. 

The owners pride themselves on providing the best quality ingredients to create their beers. Each of their beers is based on the local region’s heritage and legends. Their menu offers food and drinks made of local products, supporting local businesses. They are known for their friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere, hosting several cultural events throughout the year. Drop by to try out some of their locally brewed beers while savouring some delicious food!

Attitude Nordique

Since Attitude Nordique opened in 2018, visitors can enjoy various outdoor activities and events. They offer kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking trails, indoor climbing, and more for you to discover. By partaking in some of these activities, people can experience and find the local area while having fun! Additionally, a few events are hosted during the summer months, such as a boot camp under the starlit sky and surf & turf dinners.

La Cache D’Amélie

This quaint little restaurant is in the old hierarchy of Église Sainte-Amélie and has been open for more than 25 years. Their menu is focused on gourmet French cuisine, offering excellent tartare and an extensive list of wines. They are open all year long, and the guests can enjoy the delightful view of the Saint-Laurent from the restaurant. The employees are attentive to the customers’ needs, and the peaceful atmosphere is perfect for guests to sit and relax during their long trips. Both locals and tourists have positive memories of their experience, plunging themselves in the ambient yet simple decor. Manoir du Café Enr

This coffee shop and roasting workshop have been around since 1992, where the coffee is roasted in-house by a trusting team of people to give clients the best possible products. The temperature and roasting times are adjusted based on the type of coffee being brewed, making each of them distinct and special. All the coffee grains are cooled down for a period before being packaged and ready for purchase.

At the shop, visitors can purchase many the coffee products at an affordable price, along with various accessories. For example, their shop sells coffee makers and mugs to customers. Home Town of Pierre-Cédric Labrie

Pierre-Cédric Labrie is a well-known professional hockey player born in Baie-Comeau in 1986. 

As a child, he played in a minor ice hockey league team from Baie-Comeau. As a teenager, he quit hockey for a while before he restarted playing in a weekend league and eventually made it to the NHL. 

He debuted with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2012 before moving to the AHL in 2014. In 2019, he secured a contract with a European German hockey club and stayed there for two seasons. After completing his contract, he returned to the AHL and currently plays for the Syracuse Crunch. He is married to hockey legend Patrick Roy’s daughter, Jana Piuze-Roy.
