In Passage to Ararat, which received the National Book Award in 1976, Michael J. Arlen goes beyond the portrait of his father, the famous Anglo-Armenian novelist of the 1920s, that he created in Exiles to try to discover what his father had tried to forget: Armenia and what it meant to be an Armenian, a descendant of a proud people whom conquerors had for centuries tried to exterminate. But perhaps most affectingly, Arlen tells a story as large as a whole people yet as personal as the uneasy bond between a father and a son, offering a masterful account of the affirmation and pain of kinship.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“More than an excursion into a place...the whole work glows like a jewel with the warmth of humanity and the appreciation, hard won, of both strength and weakness.” ―Eugenia Thornton, Cleveland Plain Dealer

“Beautifully written and stunning in its insight and honesty... One comes to see that the object of Arlen's search is not only, or even primarily, Armenia or Armenians, but himself and his father.” ―
David Milofsky, Milwaukee Journal

“[A] moving, passionate book....written with a mixture of passion, puzzlement, sorrow, and outrage.” ―
Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post

“Beautifully moving.... The reader becomes captivated with exotic tales from the past and joins Arlen's journey with zest in this quite marvelous record.” ―
William Hogan, San Francisco Chronicle

The book arrived in time, but not in the condition I expected: it is damaged and full of handwriting notes. :-(

I initially purchased this book as it was recommended reading for anyone thinking about either visiting or moving to the motherland of Armenia. I was not expecting that I would have such an emotional response to the tale that unfolded going deeply into the "Armenian question". I had never read anything about the Armenian genocide before and this book gave me insight that I would probably never have read. After reading the book I also purchased a book on the Armenian Earthquake and a biography about William Soroyan as the book made me curious about modern Armenian culture throughout the diaspora. I would recommend that anyone interested in Armenia or has a spouse who is Armenian read this book as a way to understand the sadness that is built in to the average modern Armenian. A must read.

I was a bit skeptical when I was first reccomended to read this book. Ivery always loved and respected my heiratige, and after reading Micheals experience, rather one's journey. I am far more proud to be Armenian. Unaware of the magnetude to which we have played a role the history of mankind. I am not only humbled but proud.

Thank you for this endearing story.
At some point in our lives, mostly in our later years a over whelming desire to draw close to the best memory of our parent exist. An on. going journey to a place foreign to most, of a scattered
generation of sufferage and loss. I pray for the next generation , that can distance themselves from the past. The ending was lovely.

Arlen’s journey in search of what it means to be a 20th century man of Armenian descent traced centuries of history in compelling descriptions, culminating in what many of us did not understand: Armenia was virtually exterminated. Very reader friendly, hard to put down, yet the gruesome details of the various massacres required me to stop and try to absorb the tragedy:highly recommended.

This book makes you think very hard about how the Armenians were & still are treated. Even in America there was a stigma of having an Armenian name as a child in the 1950's.

I am very happy with my purchase of "Passage to Ararat." This book has very nice illustration on the Armenian history throughout it's thousands of years old rich history and culture. It's a personal story of Arlen who travels to Armenia to find his roots. Very touching story of Armenian genocide survivors feelings and thing they want to forget.

A profound book chronicling a journey to the heart of being Armenian, illuminated by the telling of the rich history of the Armenian people. Soulful.

While I myself am an Armenian and enjoy books about the heritage, I couldn't seem to really get into this one. For some reason his writing style just didn't appeal to me. I picked it up twice during the summer and a few more time since then during the year but I still haven't been able to get through the entire thing. It's not that it was dry, it just didn't capture my attention. It had a very slow, pensive feel to it that kept me from getting into the storyline. I was never interested to see where he took the book next.
