About the Author

Born in New York City to Libyan parents, Hisham Matar spent his childhood in Tripoli and Cairo and has lived most of his adult life in London. His debut novel, In the Country of Men, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and won numerous international prizes, including the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize, a Commonwealth First Book Award, the Premio Flaiano, and the Premio Gregor von Rezzori. His second novel, Anatomy of a Disappearance, published in 2011, was named one of the best books of the year by The Guardian and the Chicago Tribune. His work has been translated into twenty-nine languages. He lives in London and New York.

Beautifully written and tells a fascinating story about a missing father, son and family. It provides information about a little known country and a reign of terror.

This is a story of a nation in perpetual grieving over the grave tragic losses of precious lives, and the pervasive banality of evil everywhere and all the time. Sadly, this is one of many countries, and one of many family stories in our time and the current cold and intentional denial and rejection of aid by the international community and the leaders of powerful countries. It is a heartbreaking story of humanity, both its survival and repeated defeats, in its perpetual purgatory. The writing is so clear and precise, you can almost see the faces of his family, lovers of literature, theater, music, food, with the same rights and desires that we take for granted, imagine their lives, enjoying love for each other, love for the nature, the desert and the sea shattered by violence, despair, devastation, anxiety, anger.

This is an excellent writer, who has a beautiful way of expressing and capturing life. Unfortunately, this book is about too little. He thinks about, misses and eventually looks for his father. Even though the writing is superb I didn't finish the book because it didn't captivate me. I knew the ending, I knew he suspected the ending, and I didn't need to read anymore.

I knew when and where. I was 14. I was taking care of, and hiding the fear from, my 9-year-old sister. But my mother hated me. Every birthday she told me another way I had ruined her life. She hated that my father loved me. She hated that I loved him. Was she just telling me that to get revenge on me? Do Kiera tell the truth once in awhile?

An excellent pro, capturing deep emotions as well as conscious logic in tragic conditions imposed by power hungry politicians. People continue to endure these atrocities and anyone who knows this should read this book for the sense of solidarity. Others must read it to grow up and to know what to avoid, if humanly possible!!

This excellent book made me sad, reading about the atrocities that occurred during the Quaddafi regime in Libya. I learned so much in the course of a story that has no end, but a resolve, and, I believe some acceptance and peace, at the end.

It is not uncommon for us to assume the world is getting better, how eventually non-Western nations will catch-up and provide peace and prosperity to their people. Matar reminds us that evil lurks in the heart of man and that nations can horribly degrade. But Matar overlooks not love, admiration for a father and uncles, nor hope for something better. In a nudging and slow-handed way, his prose reminds the reader of man's relationship with the transcendent. Nothing forced, not tacky, but receptive, open and honest. The book has the power to take you outside of the cell we can find ourselves imprisoned in...the cell of affluence.
