If the first collection of song seduced you, Ritual will make you stay abed in sound and whisper in ways you've never imagined. I wanted to play them both at once, all of their recordings and drown in the sound of notes so delicately dissected from the scale that each subsequent tone slipped into my mind like an appearing line of flawless dancers from the ballet Russe. Delicate, yet strong, these women sing like silk, carely nourished, unwoven, washed, dyed and rewoven from chrysalis home into liquid folds of delicate beauty--yet strong enough to enable a man to parachute from a plane in its fullsome embrace.

The predominately acapella pieces need no embelishment. The songs adorn the mind so lavishly, and yet so purely, one feels the cool walls of a nunnery vibrating with music. It's the sort of song that makes one wax lyrical and perhaps stupidly, but nonetheless enthusiastically. Their voices bring me joy and peace.

All the people who are going gaga over the Adiemus albums should listen to this stuff. I've just listened to this CD and another by the same choir three times in a row--as soon as I turn it off, I hear it echoing through my brain again and want to listen to it again. It's marked by choir singing without vibrato, strong dissonances (sevenths, seconds, ninths), a rhythmic feeling without percussion or other accompaniment, and very expressive melodies within a relatively limited range. It turns out that this is Christmas music from Thrace. I find it a valuable addition to my collection of December music, which ranges from George Winston to Michael Praetorius. Just delightful.

Anche la parte strumentale è interessante: Danze dai ritmi irregolari e vorticosi, sicuramente oggetto di studio da parte di Bartok..
