ROUND BY ROUND

REY VARGAS vs TOMOKI KAMEDA

Round 1: Kameda comes out to center ring only to be met with several long jabs from Vargas. Vargas probes Kameda’s guard with a couple more jabs before taking a step back to keep his distance. Kameda falls short on a jab, the an overhand right. Jab lands clean for Vargas. Now Vargas just misses on a right hand. Jab lands for Vargas again, Kameda tries to retaliate with a couple of hooks. Overhand right lands well for Kameda this time and Vargas shakes it off. Right hand lead partially lands for Vargas. Now Vargas tries a jab to the body that falls just short. Left hook lands for Kameda. Close round but I think Vargas edged it. Vargas 10-9.

Round 2: Kameda has a couple of jabs easily defended by Vargas. Kameda pushes forward behind another jab that doesn’t land clean. Now Kameda pushes Vargas to the ropes and tries another overhand right but Vargas ties him up. Uppercut partially lands for Vargas, then a solid body shot. Kameda misses on a big left hook after he lunges after Vargas. Both fighters trade punches and Kameda gets pushed down during the exchange. Vargas tries another uppercut but doesn’t land it this time. Double left hook comes from Vargas. Hard right hand lands to the body for Vargas. Vargas slips a hard right hand from Kameda. Vargas 10-9, 20-18.

Round 3: Jab lands to the body for Vargas. Kameda throws a measuring jab that gets caught by Vargas. Now Kameda tries a jab to the body but that falls a little short. Right hand to the body gets blocked by Kameda but then Vargas lands the right hand upstairs. Right hand lead lands clean for Vargas. Kameda throws another looping right hand that makes some contact but doesn’t land clean. Kameda charges forward with a flurry but misses on all his shots and Vargas taunts him to keep throwing. Right hand lands to the body for Vargas. Kameda misses on a wide left hook. Another left hand lands well to the body for Vargas. Vargas 10-9.

Round 4: Left hook lands to the body right away for Vargas, who starts out this round very aggressively. Now Vargas gets back to his lateral movement but eats a clean shot from Kameda. Kameda tries to time another right hand but doesn’t land it, then follows it up with a cuffing left hook that pushes Vargas to the canvas — no knockdown. Vargas digs the body again with a left hook to the body. Jab lands for Vargas, Kameda looks to push himself into punching range against his longer opponent. Jab lands clean for Vargas again, who then skips to the side. Kameda lands a short left hook with little power and then a grazing right hand upstairs. Vargas starts jabbing at distance again but takes a short right from Kameda before the bell. I think Kameda is having some individual moments but Vargas is controlling the action for the most part. Vargas 10-9, 40-36.

Round 5: Kameda pushes forward behind a tight guard and walks into a short combination before getting tied up by Vargas. Kameda throws two jabs but they don’t quite find the range. Kameda tries to time a big right hand but misses again. Left hook lands for Kameda this time. Vargas sticks his jab and then throws a combination behind it, landing a clean right hand that snaps Kameda’s head. Kameda misses on a lunging right hand at center ring. Left hook lands to the body for Vargas at the end of a short combination. Vargas is trying to keep this fight at the end of his punches and has largely been successful with that tactic. Vargas 10-9.

Round 6: Vargas jabs and moves along the outside as he tries to bait Kameda into running into his shots. Kameda charges forward with a left hook that gets smothered before it could land clean. Vargas is now tying up on the inside to ensure that he gets the kind of fight he wants, eliminating Kameda’s opportunities. Two short uppercuts land on the inside for Vargas. Jab lands to the body for Kameda. Right hand grazes Kameda upstairs. Vargas flicks a few more jabs and then tries to add in the uppercut behind it with middling success. I still see Vargas outpointing Kameda who can’t consistently land clean punches. Vargas 10-9, 60-54.

Round 7: Vargas throws a couple long jabs to establish the range he wants. Now Vargas sticks a jab to the body. Now Kameda doubles his jab and finds better success closing the distance — he should do a lot more of that. Jabs land for Vargas, then a right hand to the body. Right hand upstairs lands clean for Vargas. Another looping right hand from Kameda just misses Vargas upstairs. Now Kameda lands a body shot on the inside. Right hand to the body lands for Kameda. Double jab works for Kameda this time. Kameda 10-9.

Round 8: Vargas throws out a few more jabs to keep Kameda at arms reach. Kameda tries to close the distance but Vargas ties him up quickly. Kameda continues to push forward but is still having a real hard time keeping Vargas where he wants him. Right hand lean lands for Vargas but Kameda comes back with two or three land land clean. Now Kameda strafes Vargas along the ropes. Vargas tries some uppercuts to the body that Kameda is able to block. Short left hook partially lands for Kameda. Kameda 10-9, 74-78.

Round 9: Kameda pushes forward but falls right into a clinch. Now both fighters trade and land. Kameda taunts Vargas by holding his arms to the side but Vargas isn’t about to get out of his game. Vargas steps forward as Kameda starts walking backwards and Vargas partially lands two punches. Right hand lead from Vargas makes solid contact. Now Kameda gets in a left hook shortly after. Vargas continues to keep his hands moving and his activity has largely kept Kameda from mounting any sustained offense. Vargas 10-9.

Round 10: Vargas leads with a few punches that don’t land well. Left hook lands clean for Vargas this time as he catches Kameda getting ready to throw. Vargas throws a short combination and then gets back to his distance. Kameda misses on a right hook and Vargas tags him with a jab in return. Lead left hook to the body lands for Vargas, who then moves back along the ropes. Now Kameda lands a straight right hand but was unable to follow it up. Now a left hook lands for Kameda. Vargas gets back to his jab and lands it while looking for the right uppercut. Jab lands upstairs for Vargas. Kameda charges with a combination but doesn’t land anything. Vargas 10-9, 98-92.

Round 11: Kameda pushes forward but walks into a couple of reaching jabs from Vargas. Vargas continues to stick his long jab out there to keep Kameda out of punching range. Another clean jab lands for Vargas. Kameda misses on a left hook and immediately ends up in a clinch. Long uppercut from distance misses for Vargas, and is a dangerous punch for him to be throwing at this stage of the fight. Now Vargas misses on a sweeping right hook before stepping back and landing another jab moments later. Vargas cleanly outboxed Kameda in this round. Vargas 10-9.

Round 12: Kameda charges forward but Vargas grabs hold right away. Vargas throws a few long shots and then tries to play matador. Kameda lands a couple of shots while tied up on the ropes as the referee tried to break and the referee takes a point from Kameda. Jab lands for Vargas who then skips away again. Kameda tries to land a couple short body shots on the inside but they’re ineffective. Kameda knows he’s behind and is looking for a big moment and he tries to whack Vargas with both hands as Vargas grabs hold at close quarters. Left hook lands clean for Kameda with Vargas along the ropes. Right lands to the body for Kameda. Right hand from Kameda glances off Varga’s shoulder. Kameda 9-9. I’ve got it for Vargas, 117-110.

DIEGO DE LA HOYA vs RONNY RIOS

Round 1: De La Hoya misses on a jab to start the fight. De La Hoya misses on another jab that falls short at range. De La Hoya misses on a one-two at center ring as he can’t quite find his distance yet. Check hook partially lands for De La Hoya. De La Hoya tries another one-two that Rios is able to partially block. Check hook partially lands for De La Hoya again. De La Hoya misses on a right hand as Rios pulls away. Slow round, but I’ll edge it to De La Hoya on activity. De La Hoya 10-9.

Round 2: De La Hoya leads with two jabs that Rios is mostly able to block. De La Hoya lands a nice shot to the body on the inside momentarily. Now Rios lands a right hand that stuns De La Hoya for a second! Rios tries to follow it up but De La Hoya regains his bearings and rattles off a few shots. Rios comes back with an uppercut on the inside. Double left hook comes from Rios at center ring. Both fighters trade blows at center ring with both landing a couple grazing blows. Left hook lands clean for Rios. Right hand lands for De La Hoya. Now both trade jabs and lands. Two body shots get in for RIos, followed by a left hook upstairs. Another left hook lands for RIos, who times it well. De La Hoya is bleeding from his nose a little now. Rios 10-9, 19-19.

Round 3: De La Hoya misses on an uppercut at the end of a short combination. Right hand partially lands for De La Hoya. Hard right hand lands for Rios, then a left hook! De La Hoya tries an uppercut again but misses. A couple of hooks to the body and a short one upstairs lands for Rios. Rios tries to work De La Hoya on the inside but De La Hoya comes back with a jab to the body. Rios doubles up the left hook again and makes some good contact. De La Hoya lands one downstairs now. I still like Rios in this round. Rios 10-9.

Round 4: Both fighters trade. De La Hoya gets in some solid shots on the inside as Rios tries to fend him off. De La Hoya is trying to make a stand here and make a solid impression on Rios. De La Hoya lands a short punch that catches Rios before he can get off. Rios tries to go to the body but De La Hoya comes back with several more punches. Rios fires back himself but De La Hoya holds his ground. Right hand lands to the body for De La Hoya. De La Hoya 10-9.

Round 5: De La Hoya tries to come out with a combination as Rios covers up. Rios tries to land a left hook and the puts in two more for good measure. De La Hoya falls short on a three punch combination at center ring. Left hook lands for Rios but De La Hoya comes back with more punches to take the play away. Right hand from Rios falls short. Now De La Hoya lands an uppercut as Rios leans forward. Right hand lead lands for Rios now, then a left hook, then another that stuns De La Hoya! Both fighters trade and De La Hoya throws a few back. Another left hook lands for Rios, then another again before the bell! I think Rios stole this round at the end. Rios 10-9.

Round 6: Rios comes out with a right hand lead and lands it well. De La Hoya throws a combination but eats a hard left hook from Rios in between. Rios starts working the body on the inside with uppercuts and hooks. De La Hoya lands a right uppercut on the inside, then a short combination before smothering Rios’ response. Hard body shots from Rios followed by an uppercut put De La Hoya down! De La Hoya can barely get up but when he does the referee doesn’t like how he looks as De La Hoya doesn’t seem to want to continue. He waves it off! Rios KO-6.

JOET GONZALEZ vs MANUEL AVILA

Round 1: Avila leads with a couple of sharp jabs that Gonzalez is able to pick off. Now Gonzalez lands a jab to the body. Two more jabs come from Avila as Gonzalez looks to press forward. Hard jab from Gonzalez snaps Avila’s head back. Avila flicks a few jabs that land on Gonzalez’s gloves. Gonzalez blocks a short flurry from Avila. Right hand to the body lands for Gonzalez, then he partially lands one upstairs. Hard jab lands again for Gonzalez, followed by a right hand. I think Gonzalez landed the best shots of the round even though Avila was more active. Gonzalez 10-9.

Round 2: Avila throws two jabs that don’t land, followed by two more that get picked off. Jab lands to the body foy Gonzalez. Jab lands for Gonzalez. Right hand lead lands for Gonzalez this time. Now Gonzalez throws the right hand to the body and Avila tries to respond with a couple shots that don’t land well. Avila looks for a left hook to the body but takes a hook to the body himself. Now Avila throws to the body with his own hook. Avila throws as Gonzalez covers up and blocks and then Gonzalez lands a straight right hand lead. Avila is throws but then eats another straight right hand. Two jabs come from Avila. I slightly edge this round to Avila. Avila 10-9, 19-19.

Round 3: Gonzalez presses forward behind a tight guard and Avila throws a few that land on Gonzalez’s guard. Avila jabs and pivots before unloading another combination to the head and body. Gonzalez falls short on a jab this time and Avila lands hooks to both sides of Gonzalez’s body. Now Gonzalez throws two body shots and looks for a big shot upstairs and misses. Gonzalez lands a right hand upstairs this time, followed by another shortly after. Gonzalez’s punches look like they’re making an impression on Avila. Jab lands for Gonzalez. I like Gonzalez here in a pretty close round. Gonzalez 10-9.

Round 4: Avila throws a short combination that is all blocked by Gonzalez. Right hand lands to the body for Gonzalez, then a left jab upstairs. Avila lands a jab now and looks to pivot out of danger, but takes a right hand on his way out. Two body shots land for Avila. Left hand lands for Gonzalez who is starting to keep this fight at close range. Hard right hand lands clean for Gonzalez, Avila backs up to the corner. Gonzalez is pressing forward and applying tons of pressure on Avila, who is starting to look like the pressures is wearing on him. Right hand lead lands for Gonzalez, Avila retreats. More right hands land for Gonzalez just before the bell. Gonzalez 10-9, 39-37.

Round 5: Gonzalez comes out and tries to meet Avila in his corner. Avila fires off three punches as Gonzalez walks right through it. Hard right hand lands upstairs for Gonzalez. Avila throws three ineffective punches. Jab lands for Gonzalez. Hard left hook lands for Gonzalez this time, who is starting to land clean shots at a frightening rate. Avila can’t have too much left, he’s definitely starting to fade under the pressure. Left hook, right uppercut land for Gonzalez! Gonzalez throws another flurry and Avila goes down on a slight push. The referee rules it a push down. Gonzalez gets back to work, trashing Avila around the ring. Hard left hook lands twice for Gonzalez and Avila goes down this time for sure! Avila gets up and the bell rings. Gonzalez 10-8.

Round 6: Avila’s right eye is swollen pretty good now. Avila leads the round with three quick punches that Gonzalez blocks. Jabs come from Avila but they’re just landing on Gonzalez’s gloves. Avila throws a combination and Gonzalez looks like he’s letting some of that punishment soak in. Now Gonzalez turns it on and strafes Avila with a number of clean shots to the head. More right hands and left hooks land for Avila. This fight should be stopped here. Right hand lead lands for Gonzalez. Avila is just trying to defend himself now but he’s still eating clean shots. Avila is beat and the corner finally throws in the towel. Gonzalez KO-6.

ROCKY HERNANDEZ vs ROGER GUTIERREZ

Round 1: Hernandez leads with a left hook that doesn’t land well but gets Gutierrez moving backwards. Gutierrez tries to lead with a right hand but finds Hernandez’s gloves. Hernandez presses forward and misses on a right uppercut. Double left hook lands for Hernandez but Gutierrez comes right back with a couple clean shots of his own. Now Hernandez lands asolid punch and Gutierrez might be bleeding from the mouth already. Gutierrez comes in with two shots that make some good contact on Hernandez. HARD RIGHT HAND FROM GUTIERREZ PUTS HERNANDEZ DOWN! HERNANDEZ GETS UP BUT HE’S UNSTEADY AND FALLS BACK TO THE CANVAS! IT’S OVER! GUTIERREZ KO-1.


Tonight at 7 pm ET on DAZN, Golden Boy is back with a card from Carson, California, headlined by a world title bout at 122, with Rey Vargas defending his WBC belt against Tomoki Kameda.

Wil Esco will be on the round by round call tonight.

Vargas won his belt back in 2017, beating Gavin McDonnell in the United Kingdom, and has made four successful defenses. Kameda is a former titleholder at 118 who lost two straight to Jamie McDonnell in 2015, and is 5-0 since moving up in weight after those defeats.

The co-feature will see Diego De La Hoya battle Ronny Rios in another super bantamweight bout, with the winner likely to find himself in a title fight sooner than later.

Top prospects Rocky Heranndez, Joet Gonzalez, and Alexis Rocha are also in action.
