This year’s defensive line class -- defensive end or outside linebacker in particular -- class is one of several positions that are absolutely loaded with talent. Not just exceptionally talented players at the top, but depth throughout. It takes a lot to stand out in this class, but that is a mark of just how good Jon Allen is.
The New York Giants could find themselves in need of a talented defensive lineman. And while they’re unlikely to have a shot at Allen, players have taken tumbles down the draft board before.

Strengths
- Uses compact, powerful build well to consistently play with leverage
- Uncommon flexibility and bend for his build
- Very good first step
- Smart hand usage. Consistently wins hand fights in the trenches
- Great motor. Always seems to run down plays.
- Uses strength and leverage to stand up to double teams in the run game.
- Has the quickness to rush the passer from the inside or outside. Quick to get around in DL stunts.
- Highly experienced and well coached.
Weaknesses
- Does not have ideal length for an edge rusher
- Top-end speed is a question
- Very good athlete, but doesn’t appear to have elite or truly explosive athletic traits.
- Questions about his shoulder health will need to be answered.
Does He Fit With The Giants?
Absolutely. He won’t get that far, but he absolutely fits.
Allen is the kind of player who can find a fit in any defense. 3-4 teams will likely look at him as a 5-technique. 4-3 teams (or 3-4 teams in a nickel package) will likely use him as either a left defensive end or a 3-technique depending on scheme and package.
He is as well-rounded a player as you are going to find in the draft. Allen is a consistently stout run defender, and a hand-full for pass protectors. He could have elected to declare for the draft in 2016 and almost certainly would have been a first round pick. However, he gambled on himself, returned to school, and now could hear his name called in the first five selections.
There has been talk that he could slide due to concerns about his shoulder health. If he happens to fall all the way to 23rd overall, then the Giants are faced with a tough decision.

Final Thoughts
The Giants have a dominant defense that only got better throughout 2016, and Jon Allen is the kind of player who can make it even better. With the quickness and agility to rush off the edge while also having the power and leverage to play inside, he is almost tailor made for any “multiple” front.
But while it might be nice to think about him lining up next to Olivier Vernon, Damon Harrison, Johnathan Hankins, and Jason Pierre-Paul, barring a shocking fall, or trade up, he won’t get anywhere near the Giants.
